The love of killing people, selling crack and beating-up women? I'm confused?

great job generalizing... how about listening to the immortal technique song in its entirety... pay attention and it might change you.

i love rap because it is some powerful ass poetry. i dont like listening to gangster rap, but i understand that they need to get the word out. i understand that they have had to see things no one should ever see. and although i cannot relate, i respect them.

now all that bullshit on the radio about cell phone watches and dubs, that shit sucks.

There's a real dichotomy in the rap world. There are gangster styled rappers and then there are extemporaneous speakers that I like to call 'flow' who let rhymes spin off of the top of their minds, speaking in a dialect most refined. Sometimes those extemporaneous rappers do gang related raps too, such as lil wayne.

I see a struggle to separate the violence of it too, yet the first few raps I looked over on the first page weren't anything new and striking or non-violent - just the same damn stuff about hustling, staying strapped, and bitches. You could say, "well you're not in their world, you wouldn't understand." Uhhh, barely anyone here is in "their" world, often times the rappers themselves aren't even in "their" world.

Though I have great respect for rappers like lil wayne and Jay-z who can freestyle a hit in a matter of minutes - I can't stand the same ole same ole. At least TI actually went out of his way to include a larger vocabulary of words in his release of paper trail.
Rap tired me out, but I have been an avid listener since my early days, and I think people are having trouble coming out with new ways to show the public how ill or dope they are.

Those of you who enjoy gangster rap, listen to The Game - 300 bars and running
if you have not yet. The entire song is 15 minutes long and disses the fake mainstream attitude of 50 cent and the G unit (G U NOT). He disses 50-cent multiple times off of real life experiences and its a legitimately good song in general because the basis of it is a diss, the violence of the song is incited FROM the diss and not randomly interjected like most rap.

I am sick of the mainstream rap not for the violence and down talking, but for the lack of originality, the market is flooded with songs that sound alike with identical lyrics.
let me see what I can drum up from the top of my head.

Originality, if you could pass me the melody
aint a crime to hear a rhyme where we have no fatality
wanna step on stage, get enraged? Then battle me
maybe I'll try once you got the cage rattling
only thing you can do is piss off the snake
with some talent and skill that is clearly fake
put your ass in the oven like an easy bake
come out in 5 minutes and get smoked like shake

I thought it was all about getting along
keeping a tight knit group
with some hits from the bong
aint no moral fabrics keepin you strong
when you go for a coke run
the crew comes along

Ha! as if you knew the rhymes that I'd spawn
lookin fierce yet stoned like cheech and chong
still steady thick smoke seepin out the bong
and if you're calling that kush I'm calling you WRONG
Thinkin you're big, but your cash is all gone
badly burnt, barely blazed is the shit that you're ON
all dressed up like you comin out of prom
but the movie crew left and you aint james bond
ha ha ha is the name of this song
how I laugh at you like u got a small dong

if you wanna find me, I'm still at home
huge hits of blue cheese, hash hits to the dome
Like the finished herb? maybe u get a clone
so in 2 or 3 months, you can smoke your own
but like them gamer ass dudes, I gotta pull a pwn
cuz that cut was shwag, not even home grown.

How hard was that? 5 minutes just off the top of my head, but I live for the extemporaneous method of rapping. Extemporaneous means just saying stuff off the top of your head, as it pops in, without time to think or clarify. That flow of mind crazy freestyle extemporaneous flow is what I go for you know.

We agree  spitting conscious (mindful) lyrics is an art-form

it can be sophisticated : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZEvOzGlW7M

crude : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2fKIxQNqnr8

or outright rude : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vv3yjoXR7mo

but the message is most often the same :canabis:

RIP big pun

one of the nicest lyricist ever

This is hip hop

Whatcha Gon Do

It's hard to explain how my squad can harbor the strain
of being the largest name in rap, since the almighty Kane
Acknowledge the fame, my call was to reign the streets
from Harlem to Queens, back to the Bronx who fathered the dream
Started this thing called rap, where I reign supreme, my team
Regardless of that, I've seen things as far as the crack
that'll make the hardest largest artist heart just collapse
I'm part of all that that's why it's so hard to go back
and start from scratch
I'm locked and I'm trapped, in a giant cage
Tryin to savor these few dyin days
I have left, to the form of flesh; should I lie in my grave?
I'm tryin to persuade, my motto is try to be brave
and not give death the satisfaction of seein me dyin afraid
That why I rise from the grave singin church songs like
I was Je-sus Christ pa-rum-pum-pum-pum

'Til my last breath I'll have death before dishonor (c'mon)
And welcome drama (yeah) with open arms and a code of honor
My whole persona equals that of Gods
Definin' matters hard all before you even had a job
I'll stab and rob if I have to, fuck it I'll blast you
Tell the devil it was Pun, if he ask you
And let him know how we be deadin 'em, show him my emblem
The tombstone, the throne, every millennium
A child is born that can preform at a level beyond
the expected four minute thirty second song
We reign supreme, my team be all up in your dream
with the "kill anything" grill, chillin' beside the guilotine
Executioner style, black suit and a smile
Who's next to get their neck hacked loose in the crowd
Move from the aisle, don't make me have to prove that I'm wild
Word to Cuban, my crew killers, y'all niggaz shoot in the clouds
(Who's in the house?) Punisher straight from hell
Who's in the house (Terror Squad motherfucker we the real)
What the deal, now you know that's how we roll
Hard core like B.O., bring in the corns baby bro

Yo, my squad is honored like Elijah Muhammad
But I'm God-retarded, ain't no righteousness in this heart of violence
Hard as diamond but I'm in the ruff, listen up
If you ever see me with the Feds you can bet it's in the cuffs
Ain't no snitch in us, bitch in us
Unofficial-ness, everything we outside you wish you was
Official thugs in the drug profession
Drug connections, drug addictions
Still seein the judge for drug possession
The four-D's, all these is more reas'
to either get big, or leave and let live
We the best there is T.S., ain't nobody else
We probably Dove, cause we all way on top of the shelf
I'm lockin your wealth with the master keys, freeze
Don't try to breeze, or I'ma squeeze and blast the back of your knees
Just pass the cheese, please don't test the toaster
My tech'll roast ya body faster than Ferrari's Testarossa
You're gettin closer to death, Reaper's got a hold on your breath
You goin straight to hell as you sell your soul for your flesh
You was posin a threat, now you froze in the bed
Minute ago, you was poppin shit, holdin ya dick
Now what's the problem, you ain't nuttin like you said on your album
I thought you was wildin bustin your guns and runnin the island
You was't violent, you was silent tryin to get college credits
How pathetic, did it to get out of the calisthetics
I'm +Dianetics+ combined with lyrics
My matureness is my insurance
Kill my appearance, I'm a shinin spirit
You gotta fear it, cause every last gem is poison
You gotta cheer it, you can't win you better join em
I'm head-annointin niggas like the Holy Gospel
I'm the only vato loco to smoke you with fire-blowin nostrils
Watch for the toast, when you see it, you better draw yours
Warlords, callin The Giant, it's all yours

3 of my favorite big pun verses

got a hundred guns a hundred clips
Nigga I'm from New York.
ya cant take shit for garanted caz life is too short

Been a long time.

Feel like diggin this up. Here's a fresh one.

"Fast money.
Slow money.
Wish there was NO money.
Life would be so lovely...
Fuck pockets, if our tummies were all chubby...

But alas, this is not our world.
And I don't want to JUST survive
I need to thrive,
so does my little girl.
So stay out of my way.
Whether you a "thug", a "hustla" or the DEA...

Fuck the government.
Behind the scenes.
Befuddlement.
Dishonest and evil.
People controlling people...

Ignorant modern slaves
stuck in a maze
stuffing their face
with modified maize.
Obsessed and crazed but still
indifferent day to day.
Sit by and allow their world and mind to
be molested and raped.

Staring mindlessly into a screen.
Slowly losing their dreams.
Almost unseen.

They tell us who to love.
They tell us who to hate.
They tell us how to act.
They tell us what are facts.

They want us to love empty shells of people, who place importance on the unimportant. (celebrities)

They want us to hate those who may free us from being feeble. (revolutionaries)

They want us to act against anyone who rejects the society they have created for us. (conformity)

They want us to believe their media and keep us in a constant state of fear, so we look to the government to rescue us. (propaganda)

They want us to blindly follow their lead and have the society they created chastise us if we do not comply. (conformity)"

When I think of good hip-hop music Young Jeezy and guys with Lil at the front of their name are not the people who come to mind. To be honest that shit is straight garbage. The beats, if that's what you wanna call 'em, are straight trash, the hooks are rediculous, and none of them cats have any fuckin' flow. None of that shit should even be considered hip hop, it's all it's own genre which should be called something along the lines of "talentless shit." My little cousins are more coherent than most of those guys. If people wanna listen and enjoy that music, it's fine by me, but don't be calling it hip hop.

I think anyone who believes that that music is hip-hop needs to cop Illmatic, Lifestylez Ov Da Poor & Dangerous, Ready To Die, listen to some Rakim, Wu-Tang, Kool G Rap, and KRS-One and then realize that they are slandering the term hip-hop and never do it again. Here I'll get you all started.....

the new jeezy mixtape is hot - trappin aint dead

I miss the MiXTape game from back home, the Bay doesn't really have one.. I always used to bump Jezzy, Gucci, Wacka and lots of NYC mixtapes because they were always available in ATL..
