Space aliens have gray skin color? They must have evolved from dolphins... or pygmy elephants.

Actually they have grey skin color because people hallucinate them durring sleep paralysis. It's some combination of area 41 paranoia originating from the 40's and the age old sleep paralysis where people are awake but still dreaming and can not move. Common halucinyions are the hat man,shadow people and alien abductions. I'm old times it was ghosts old hags or wiyches, succubi, and ghostz. The nature of the hallucination is filtered through contemporary culture at the time.
For whatever reason the hallucinations are always in black and white so the aliens are grey.
