The dugout is a a rectangular (or sometimes cylindrical) wooden smoking apparatus with two compartments, the larger to store the herb and a narrower, cylindrical compartment to store the pipe , It is used to facilitate discreet personal use of MJ
The original system was issued patent number 4214658. It is sometimes called a one-hitter, hitter box, pinch hitter, a pinchey, a tote-a-smoke, or a pinger (because it makes a "ping" sound when opened), The pipe stored in the dugout is a specialized chillum that closely resembles a cigarette in size and appearance. It may be painted gold/yellow on the stem and white down the length to mimic the coloring of a cigarette. Metal, ceramic, or glass in construction, it has a shallow recess ("crater") at one end into which the herb is loaded; this may be fitted with a pre-shaped screen to prevent drawing down herb particles to clog the channel, which extends from the crater to the opposite end of the pipe. Because the process of smoking marijuana with such a device so closely resembles the process of smoking a cigarette, it is often used when a user wishes to smoke marijuana in public without attracting attention.

The dugout has a swiveling or sliding door which caps the two compartments. A spring at the bottom of the cylindrical compartment pushes the end of the pipe out of the box when the door is opened so that it can be extracted from the box. The sharp edge of the recessed end of the pipe allows it to be loaded by burrowing it into the herb compartment and moving the pipe end back and forth while continuing to suck slowly. The shredded cigarette tobacco, or any herb which has been previously sifted to an even particle size, can then be smoked by lighting it with a flame as one would a tobacco cigarette, but while drawing air more slowly to prevent burning too hot.

The metal shield at one end of a butane lighter may be held right behind the pipe to reflect the light emitted from the burning herb, allowing the user to monitor the burn while inhaling the smoke.

Found this in my seedbox , forgot i had it , recomended to me twenty odd year's ago by a friend from Chicago .

I picked one of these (knockoff) back in the late 80s or early 90s...I found it about a year ago and gave it my kid. It's a pretty cool compact little package....really like these.

I remember them well.

I remember a friend using a drill press to cut teeth into the bat so it loaded with a tiny twist... I just can't remember if he did it in shop class or not.

It was the only way to smoke inside many places.

Which brings me to another throwback... the blow tube.

Dryer sheets and a twenty ounce bottle or a TP tube and a rubber band and you could smoke one hits almost anywhere.

PS I loved the Proto Pipe too... I just can't smoke out of metal anymore.
