The DDoS that almost broke the internet

Yeah, so far I understand essentially none of this shit. All I know is that I wanted to get bitcoins today at MtGox.com and they had a thread up about DDoS. I have no fricking clue what it is, but it must be bad shit if you are posting on it. I hope they catch whoever is doing this and just plain old cut their fricking throats. This sort of Internet bullshit should be punished with swift and sure justice that doesn't wait on courts or excessive lawyering. Find them, unplug them and bury them where not even their mamas can find them.

just to clarify, this DDoS attack was based around spam and server blacklisting -- it had nothing to do with Bitcoins or MtGox

DoS = Denial of Service attack ... usually it's caused by simply flooding the target with more data than its server(s) can handle, so that any legitimate attempts to connect with the site simply time-out.

A DDoS = Distributed Denial of Service, which is essentially the same but the attacker uses multiple sources to attack the target... botnets are often used for such attacks.
