The Case for "Clear Pots" for growing

I was told clear pots hurt roots...so I guess all my plants were illusions or dreams.

I agree with you on this one. Clear pots have helped me make my ladies more comfortable.

I agree that if this works for you, go for it, but I will tell you that I had increased root growth, especially the fuzzy stretchy type when I covered my pots. The ones I covered sooner had better plants overall with more roots 2 weeks later and in the final stages as well. I used panda poly which had the black side facing in. There definitely were not more roots growing in the areas that weren't covered. The more delicate roots seemed to like the cool dark areas more. They still grow down to the bottom of the pot, but the more I cover the faster they grow. I would imagine the roots form the fuzzy type overnight but they are going to be dead after seeing light for a couple of hours. Eventually, I think the roots would develop more on the inside of the rootball due to being stressed being repeatidly grown and then supressed by the light from the next day. This could possibly prevent them from looking as rootbound and interwoven aronud the outside maybe? While I will continue to try experimentation with clear pots, I will always keep them covered when I am not viewing the roots. For those in clear pots, I think people don't give you credit for the other 7/8 of the roots in the pot that aren't exposed to any light at all; you get a lot of credit from me for your work. Maybe you gain in transplant what you loose in light-exposure.

I like the clear pots, I use pepsi bottles and what not alot for sog, I found that if I have one that is showing signs of root problems from the light, or it seems to warm, I just cover it with one of the many old and destroyed socks I have.

Most have giant holes in them anyway, I keep them to make dog toys out of, but I cut the bottom off, and slip it on the pot. Then I just slid it down a little to check roots.

Yes, its as funny as it sounds, to see plants growing out of tube socks.

I use it to cover the ones right up front next to the light, getting the most light and heat of the planters.

Using a clear container doesnt have a bad effect on the roots.If you walk into a hydro store and check out the cloners like EZ clone or gro-clone,they all use clear plastic containers so the customers can see inside root growth,water level and such.When you actually purchase the unit its always black plastic because its cheaper than clear.

True, I believe in what your saying pedro. I haven't seen many people say anything about how they cover them, thats why I made the point about uncovered clear pots being bad. Learning through the roots is a great way to start learning how the plant works. I sometimes grow random veggies and then just dig them up and see what the roots look like out of curiosity.

It's not black just because it's cheaper.

As ExcelAtIt has very clearly pointed out, just because it's possible to grow roots in clear containers does not mean that it:

...doesnt have a bad effect on the roots.
