just wanted to wish you all down under a happy australia day!
That was yesterday...but hey...cheers anyway.
Up my way it was stinking hot but cold beers, a smoke, BBQ lamb and a swim in the river fixes evrything.
a lovely little spot to spend a warm afternoon , one of my favourites

Can anyone help me identify this bird I just saw in my garden. I am in Canberra and I can not find it in any of my bird books.

I just found it! It is an Eastern Koel. Cool, as I have been where I am for 17 years and this is the first time I have seen it It has an amazing call - listen here.
The male Common Koel advertises its presence by a loud ascending whistle or 'koo-el', monotonously repeated; the call of the female is a repetitive 'keek-keek-keek-keek'. Males often call throughout the day and well into the night.

Moose I had a pair of those birds nest near my house. Truly it was a freakin nightmare they go all night ..all night ...and they are loud ! I'm getting stress just thinking about it 
I managed to catch site of an echidna scurrying into the bushes at the side of the road a few days ago,

I've got quite a lot. Their flowers attract nectar feeding birds and black cockatoos that rip them apart to get the seed.
COASTAL BANKSIA ABOUT 40' TALL
COASTAL BANKSIA FLOWERS
BANKSIA SPINULOSA....A SHRUB, GROWS TO ABOUT 7'
BANKSIA SERRATA...MY FAVOURITE...HUGE FLOWERS
AN OLD BANKSIA SERRATA FLOWER...1000'S OF SEEDS INSIDE
That banksia coccinea you showed is native to Western Australia. It likes sandy, very well drained soil. I tried to grow some here but the soil has to much clay in it. But the other banksias love it.
Banksia like bushfires. The heat forces the flower pods to open and release the seed. At home I just put them in the oven to get the seed out and then germinate them.
I believe there are places in California that can supply the seed or plants. I'll try and find a link.
