great posts and info - heard about drones being considered, sounds like they're moving a bit quickly
aerial/satellite photos are another work in progress
redbudduckfoot, upstate NY myself, sounds like you had the same experience, that is real interesting
NY must have made some change this year, maybe it was funding, maybe they're trying a new method with airplane/satellites

Lucky for us most of this is done in the winter when there are no leI'aves on the trees to block the camera images.

Well then, those flights/pics are useless for finding where the current summer's grow spots are.

I'd guess about 1 month before end of harvest time is most useful for taking pics of potential grow spots. Around here that'd be end of August.

I'm sure these costs are hidden in the NSA/Homeland Security budgets as they DO have some domestic intelligence value and they WANT the costs hidden.


As for planes, here in Quebec I read a news item a few weeks back about which airport they use near Montreal for the fixed wing pot spotting. So yes, planes ARE used here, in addition to choppers.
