Her growing environment looked challenging to me, including the soil.
I think of this as such an opportunity for this community and thank you for your efforts. I also think about any language barriers which could be a big frustration on both parties involved.

I am loving the exchanges, the observations, and the chance to see the POTENTIAL that exists right now in real time!! It’s like you are human ROV’s transmitting footage back to the surface looking for the Titanic!!

(A bit bombastic perhaps but my genuine feeling)

Judging from the Strain Hunters video, I think Prempavee has a pretty small farm but is marketing for other local growers. She may not be the one responsible for breeding or producing much of the product. She is trying to help the local growers and strains left behind in the green rush occurring in her country. I'm cringing a little at some of the criticism being directed towards her given these good hearted intentions.

To be fair to everyone, considering her role, I agree it would be especially important for her to be using a quality control person who has experience with Thai Sticks from the old days. It appears she is using old time growers to help some of the farmers in the area. Unfortunately, we all know how that can go when people are desperate to get the money they need to sustain themselves. People may not listen as well as they should. It would be terrible to turn down product that doesn't make the grade when people have worked their asses off trying to cash in. Cannabis is labor intensive for sure.

Prempavee, if you are monitoring this thread, I volunteer for some of that quality control work. Grading only, not informing farmers of rejection. 🤷‍♂️Hahahaha. Maintaining stardards is a rough assignment, but probably very much in the long term interest of the local growers. I fervently wish them success. 🙏

She deserves all the credit, and I give her all the respect because she deserves it. The work and energy she is putting out there is of the highest vibration. She is already a successful woman in cannabis, that’s a serious title.

I’m just worried the hype is already there, it got there before we could even begin to explore her work. And if the quest of us all is the THAI stick, the legendary real deal… then we are looking for it in the wrong farm.
I have no idea what a Thai stick smells, looks or tastes, what I have is your guys descriptions and so far I haven’t found that in her work I have here. It’s an incredible product with so much to say about the environment it was grown in.
I can only describe the product I have right now, I haven’t seen her field, or her style of regenerative agriculture, or perhaps more information on the legacy of each name, I am really interested in knowing more about the flowers I have here.
It’s a dead end, I will find out more when I grow them seeds, because what she can’t transfer due to language barrier we can figure out when we see the phenos.
If there is traditional Thai cultivation techniques and practices I would like to know more.
I wish people that go to her farm really documented the precious work, and not just take advantage of the knowledge and profit from it. Taking the seeds and selling them for 10x what she sells them her self… create a sub brand off her work in the field…
Zomia has been putting a lot of time there with her on her farm. And if you pay Zomia membership you get her seeds… ? Really. I get a kick out of what I doing right now, money went direct to her bank account. I got some seeds and enjoy deeply the smoke.
She needs help choosing her business partners that’s all I can see from far far away.

Hello everyone! This is a great thread!

I just wanted to add my experience with the real deal Thai sticks...

In 1975, the Vietnam War had just officially ended and one of my older brother's buddies had joined the Peace Corps and went over there to try and help out. At some point, he was in Thailand and while he was there, he found some Thai sticks.
He found two types of Thai sticks, in fact. One of the batches had been opiated and the other batch was non-opiated. He packed them into two, pink, ceramic "Siamese" cat statues and they were flown back on a cargo plane!
When he got back home, he unpacked everything, gave his mom the now-empty statues and then went about "distributing" the sticks to all his friends.
One day, I was visiting my brother at his house. I was listening to The Grateful Dead Live at the Mars Hotel....GIGANTIC, blue, Stanton headphones and the volume was up. My brother walks over to the chair and hands me the most pitiful-looking pin joint I had ever seen. I just looked up and said. "What's THAT?" He just smirked back and said, "Light it up!" So, I did.
The thing ignited like it was that flash paper that magicians use! But, I got it going and took a puff. I blew out the smoke and I remember it tasted kinda different. I took another puff and....froze! I was suddenly overtaken by the most blissful feeling I've ever had....warm....everything was lovely...just incredible. And then the bass drum in the music hit and I flinched. I looked up and my brother and the friend were laughing at me. I didn't even ask why. I didn't care. I felt so good, nothing mattered! I then repeated, "What was THAT?" My brother explained the situation.
It wasn't long after that, all the goodies had been distributed and shortly thereafter, disappeared....forever.

I was able to obtain a half stick of the opiated stick and also managed to snag one of the regular Thai sticks. And I remember them being very leafy, kind of blue-ish green and tan leaves intermixed...a few underripe seeds and they were wrapped onto a piece of bamboo and held on with a strand of bamboo fiber. The smell was a combination of coffee, chocolate chai spice and Kiwi black shoe polish! Incredible! Some of the pictures in this thread really do look like the type of weed that was used...but most of the weed back then was poorly grown and poorly processed after it was grown.

I think you'd probably have to find some of the older Thai stick makers in Thailand, to get to the source of the real deal -IF it even exists. My guess would be that it does still exist...somewhere. Of course, just because someone is Thai, doesn't mean that they will automatically know. I think there is a definite need for old heads in order to determine if the new weed has any resemblance to the original stuff.

Bangkok is super trippy. set and setting can play a big part in the experience . for me at least. good weed tends to be easier to find there as well though. lots of sources.

got stuck in bangkok for a few days last week and the air pollution was horrific. my lungs hurt.
its bad all over the country, its a major problem.
i wonder how organic and pure rain fed weed is in area with such bad air pollution?

all together i'm very high from mostly thai weed for good price. the hybrids now top that but were also cheap to score. the streetvendors negotiate more than the shops.

That last lot of pressed weed looks similar to what we used to get in the UK.

A Peppery orangey smoke with a real nice floaty trippy high that lasted for hours.

Great that you ventured to the markets to sample some herb. They cant really compete with the coffee shops but it's more than likely a lot nicer and closer to good local export stuff than what is in the shops.

The young local Thais are all smoking the hybrids? Maybe the grungier older wrinkled market vendors are the best bet.

Lovely seeing the pressed weed. Brings back memories of fiiine smoking.

In 1975, to get a Thai stick was beyond exotic! I treated mine like they were a sacrament when I got them. They looked very similar to the pictures above -which is to say, that they looked poorly-grown (by today's standards). Nevertheless, at the time, they looked great. Everything is relative. None of the weed, back then, looked good, either......but it was VERY good!

I fear that almost anything being wrapped around a bamboo skewer could be called a That stick -especially if it's made IN Thailand!

One of the first things I looked for, after the cannabis market became ~legal, was a Thai stick. But, the only things I could find were these silly facsimiles made from a bunch of hash oil and kief mixed into some random bud and then wrapped around a dowel with a red string! I had to laugh...I mean....no...just no.

Few if any would have stored seed in a fridge or freezer, so to find viable seed of the old lines in Thailand they would have to come from people that continued to grow these genetics out for decades during prohibition.

Nothing I am reading sounds anything close to the old Thais, apart from DC joint description of the high and taste.

I think it's safe to say at best all you're going to find around Thailand in dispensaries is commercial mid-grade weed that is nothing like the old Thai.

In all honesty, those of you that are there hunting for the old lines or are planing to travel there for that, I think you need to be looking in places away from the tourist spots.

You need to be looking in tribal areas, like where the Hmong are found in Thailand.

Places like in Chiang Rai , Mae Hong Son and in the Sameong district of Chiang Mai.

Personally , like you i think the lady needs to be commended,
she is doing some good work , organizing events , competitions ,
etc etc
maybe some of her herb isnt up to what it once was yet ,
but with some selection , and the right advisement from folks who know whats up ,
im sure she could eventually produce some world class stuff ,
it looks like she is a good grower , as many thais are , its part of their culture growing, most places with any land all have gardens where they produce some food ...

Thais are generally non judgemental folk ,, u do what you like , thats up to you , is their mantra ,, they wont judge ,
its something folks on forums could learn from in fact,
i know being involved with their culture for several decades now has helped me with many aspects of life and given me peace of mind and a better outlook on things,
the herb adds to that and completes the picture and helps u get into the right vibe to enjoy thailand ..
