I know I lucked out in 1987. The first batch of Thai I sampled was the best of the best. The quality was so good. And the opiate spray...someone knew what they were doing when they created this product. It was meant to be special. And the later batches were a little different terpwise. I feel like I got to sample bud at the pinnacle of Thai bud, something I read isn't the same now. Those farms have to exist still...the smugglers probly helped them to grow such good weed. Or they just showed people how it's done. Very memorable pot. The best commercial pot I ever got by FAR.
This was in the time period that Thai was all over the country as reported by High Times Trans Market Quotations. Later I read a Readers Digest article about a man who had been charged as a kingpin when a freighter full of Thai was discovered off the coast of Oregon. No doubt this smuggling group brought that Thai in that I got. Unless multiple groups were working on that scale. The Thai was all over the country and then vanished. Poof. No more. Later in NYC some people busted some frozen out one night a couple of years after it was over. The stuff I got in VA. was really good quality. I don't want to try and describe the terps this far down the line but the first batch was the Chocolate with some basically opium/ tar heroin juice on it that affected the aroma slightly. Very strong couchlock stuff. It would destroy you. Amazing quality. A quarter oz. was $70.00.

Was certainly import and probably cured during the trip. Most import came by ship. It takes around 37 days from Thailand to the Netherlands.

You guys have me jonesing for the real stuff. I do have Dubi's Chang Mai release. This year the weather here would have permitted it. Unusually warm late. The photos are Skunk#1 x Chocolope. Ghost face man there is in front of the Early Haze pheno of exceptionally beautiful and resinous flowers.This pheno really surprised me when it popped up. Like a haze dominant haze/ skunk. And the second photo a giant bush of more Thai dominance. The buzz of this plant was strong and satisfying. Beautiful resin. Super mold resistance. And it ain't cookies kush. But you guys have me thinking about that 1987 stuff and how freaking good it was. Man, I want a greenhouse so badly. My first was torn down. The cops actually tried to flip it like a car.

I got most of the Thai Sticks in my life from mostly one person, and one time instances from a couple others. The sticks from the long time source were all so similar, the dude must have been travelling back to the same source for about a decade. I know he went there personally and shipped it back. They were dark green and cured brown. You could only see the green if you looked closely. The smells were complex and powerful. They had a peppery aroma, but also a pine / kerosene aroma, like turpentine.
I don't hear many mention the peppery aroma. The Real Seed Company's description of it's Shan Burmese addresses it. That is what has convinced me to order those seeds. Although I don't remember any weed that smelled like pine that I didn't love. It's not for the flavor of it, but the high that I get from those weeds.
^^ You had a major hook up with getting good Thai stick like that. Most did not have anything like that and then the cost for poors like myself.
Pepper taste is always something I look into to. The Burmese is really good but not that powerful. No real euphoria with it for me. Kind of a cold high. The Northcoast Kroeng Thai is the winner for me. The Cambodian Red from Northcoast has a trippy pheno in it, just a male so far.

The Champasak and Nakhom Phanom Thai were good descriptors for me.
The Isan thai said it has an intense high which I imagine could be electric or something of that nature.
All of them describe intense aromas and resinous so lets see what they bring out, could be some very nice things I imagine or at least hope for.

I don't remember any dry Thai having a pepper or a mint smell to be honest, what I always smelt in the imports and dry cured flowers that we grew from seed were an earthy/woody/tobacco/spice complex type smell.
The old Thais also had a very long creeper high, around 30 min before it hit you fully and a very long-lasting high.

No, the most common smell in flower I came across in the different old Thai lines has been a rotten mango fruit smell well into flower. Through the flowering you can get blood like smells you can get even an acrid type smell, but I never picked up lemon.
Once the flowers dry and cure, they completely change again.
I think smoking Thai Stick bud in a pipe might have been the only stuff we would cover the bowl with a matchbook just as we finished a hit, even outdoors. We didn't let even a tiny wisp of smoke escape. We didn't even do that with good hash. We developed that bowl covering habit from smoking in our parents houses and trying not to get caught. But that Thai Stick was too precious to let a wisp escape even outside. We held the smoke in our lungs for way too long to be healthy. It may account for some of my intellect problems.

I never smelt fruiety thia cured flowers the ones i smelt were spicey / earthy pice / and even smelt thia that had an insent like smell.

Point being it's important for the future to have as much Information/ documentation of the older varieties which are nowadays mostly a Shadow of the past . Because the Truth can be lost forever if it is not shared

My version ? lol Come on herb, let's be honest here any information we have about Haze came from Sam or from Rob or from Shanti and a few others that got seed from Sam and then many years late Nevil him self posted and told his side.
That is where the information came from and decades later we find we still know nothing, it's based on an evolving story that has changed a few times. At lest, Nevil kept it consistent.

The last of the imported Thai I ever saw was 84/85 and the last Thai Steve DeAngelo saw in the US was 83, so I don't know where High Times is basing that 1987 from.
At the time, we really had no idea why the imports had stopped, but then years later the reason became clear the main players and syndicate behind it all were exposed, that in itself is a huge story.
We never saw Green Thai Sticks, it was always brown what Americans called Chock Thai we called Buddha or Buddha sticks or just Thai.

It's a hard thing to define or put a complex smell or taste into ward's Herb, but I will try.
When the old Thais grow, the smells threw flower change like I said above they could be giving a blood like smell at a set point then change to an acrid sour and as they mature start giving a rotting mango fruit smell.
But as soon as the flower has been dried it changes again like most flowers we grow but with the old Thais you prity much ended up with the same complex smell of earthy/woody/tobacco/spice complex type smell.
The taste was similar, I always loved the taste of Thais, but it was the High that I loved and that's why I grew it over all the other sativas and continue to.
The first time I ever tried Thai 'erb - I bought one gram from a San Francisco Yellow Cab 
driver - at his tiny apartment in North Beach - for $20 -
- This guy was a dedicated Jimmy Hendrix fan - and that's all he played on his record player - very loudly - I'd always get stoned with him - before I left - and his place always stunk of Thai 'erb - that earthy - woody - spiciness pervaded throughout his block - and would even follow me outside - when I left - and became my scent for a while - since if you were toking Thai - you always smelled of it -

Weeden is the name of a big chain (lots of stores) of herb stores on Koh samui and phangan ,
that sells brick . its fresh looking and green and better than anything else I’ve found.

Back in the 80's alot if not most of the 'erb sold in and thru Thailand was grown in the Golden Triangle area - far North of Thailand and into Burma(Myanmar) - where Khun Sa and his Shan Army ruled and controlled the 'erb market for quite a while - many of the Thai Cannabis farms were busted during a serious crack-down on all illegal drugs/erb's in Thailand after that time - so the Thai's would import lots of Cambodian and Lao brick weed - to try and supply the HUGE demand - and all the money to be made from tourists - like myself - who wanted some 'erb or hash to get high on - whatever it was - and where ever it came from -
Many of us back packing travellers were always looking for ways to increase our time in Asia - so needed to make money to be able to stay out there - in that magic country and others - so took to travelling to Nepal/India and Bangladesh to buy good cheap hash - then would smuggle that back into Thailand - to help fund our travels there - by selling it to other tourists we met -
- no matter how good the hash was - I always preferred toking Thai cannabis flowers - when in Thailand because the high really did complement the culture- weather and food - and you could function well on it - during the day - and it would even suffice as a bedtime smoke - since it wasn't too racy at all -

Anyway hempy just a question as im sure a hybrid version of outback haze is being passed around....your thai dont give the typical lemony, creamy, sweet sour thai tones does it ?......cus from what i know...and its abit harder to get this from the outback straigh...but it seems to give darker tones in taste and scent heavily...i did abit of experimenting....an i have to say nevil did very very well to pick your thai.....cus if used the right way ive seen it turn haze completly liver leather....eg like in a5 you can still pick up the piney nl tones with the hazeA an ag13 you get abit more muted liver leather tones due to the g13.....but your thai if used the correct way seems to ramp up the liver leather fully.....an ive seen the odd plant get some mango background as well as the liver leather....but mostly it turns the liver leather traits up heavily....( i aint got thia so dont worry.. but just did some experiments with some things)....and managed to get huge plants with those weaping willow type drooping leaves....many with completly red/purple stems....bit lighter coloured leaves to your thia.....but ive managed to get wat looks like some old old colombian thai hybrid that just reaks of pure liver leather even in veg really badly....wich was kind of nevils goal.....i ask cus ive seen some discriptions of outback hz being used and it giving lemony bright tones like modern thais....i was suprised to hear this...and then thought maybe some hybrid version of outback is being pased around....thought id ask if the lemony, creamy, sweet sour thing makes any sense to you....i know ojd haze the proper outback haze too...but im not too sure about some of whats going around....thought id ask what you think...?
