you know whats even more annoying ,
that places like thailand are now taking advice from cali on whats good , how to grow ,
and of course its indoor , with cali genetics ,
they are trying to please the customer base of tourists , and they expect that sort of pot and varieties they have heard of ...
makes a man weep really ,
but u cant blame them , the old hype machine works very well ,
its almost like a planned situation to destroy landraces by firstly banning where they grow them, then replacing them with the new age rubbish ,
really one couldnt make this shit up , for older folks who have seen this happen over decades its quite disappointing ....
what do we do?? not much we can do other than try to educate folks about origins , traditional cannabis culture etc and how important landraces are ....

Planting the eduction seed is key.
The yanks have fucked this from both ends for sure and they are really good at the capitalist marketing game.
But the thing with capitalism is it always moves in boom bust cycles.
This current “cookies“ cycle will end as the next trend takes hold with a new generation of punters.
This current wave of indoor weed is influenced by the opioid epidemic imo. Just like the taste for acid in the late 60s and cocain in the 70s/80s influenced the type of desired herb in those eras.
The resurgence of LSD, majic mushrooms, and ketamine as therapeutic medicines and increasingly as recreational choices will influence the next wave of strains imo as we see a new era emerge.
before the new cycle emerges the bust must happen.
I think this will be partly due to the burnout of the consumer. Creating these strains with 40min highs that only work once or twice is like fast fashion, it’s not sustainable. It does not create brand loyalty over the medium term or even interest in the product over the long term.
The other major factor is the world wide market emerging where labour costs are cheaper and climates superior to the US.
I could keep going on And slicing this up but I feel I’m just wanking on a bit. Sorry guys/OP slight thread derail, this is only my opinion realities may differ.
I do see light at the end of the tunnel but first we just have to fumble through the dark for a bit.

I’m in the south islands which have become completely overrun with tourists, so it’s not a really good indicator of what’s going on in real Thailand . weed shop every hundred yards selling what looks like bad commercial 90’s indoor. small super tight nugs that smell a little fruity, with some sort of dessert name. the smoke smells very average . they are selling it for 10-25 US $ a gram.
i found a shop that sold me 40grams for 80$ though because they were closing down. Supposedly it’s “destroyer” , probably “Desfran” from Dutch Passion as they sell seeds here like Arjan is doing.. it’s definitely sativa whatever it is .
I bought a some Mango Haze that I read is actually Arjan haze #2 from one of his shops and it was just ok, like in Amsterdam , but grown and dried decently.
i bought some old school brick for like $1.50 a gram and that got me the highest of anything so far.
on the streets in Bangkok people set up tables and sell homegrown outdoor. I saw jars with 6-8 inch branches of pure sativas being sold. Looked pretty poorly grown though, but still wish I had tried it.
ive seen some plants growing in peoples yards that look like real old Thai.
i been growing for 35 years and have lived most of my life in Hawaii growing pure sativas from around the world. accept for the last couple years I’ve been in the northeast helping my mother with my dying father. growing sativas isn’t possible there so I’ve just been making crosses of my South African stuff for future when I can grow properly again.
I met Gypsy in Thailand around 2001 and he turned me on to collecting seeds, so a lot of what I’ve grown has been self collected from my travels. My best luck in Hawaii was with south African stuff I got in the Transkei.
i decided on the frying pan with a lid method for decarbing. It works but not very well. I mix it with honey and peanut butter and spoon it down. Wish I could find a toaster oven to use.
It’s incredibly frustrating not being able to smoke here when I can smell it non stop and I risked my ass here so many times when is was illegal and could still smoke.
its legal to grow so there must be a lot of the old stuff still being grown in the north. i can’t see modern hybrids surviving the intense humidity.
i imagine with time and enough failures, people here will realize that their native stuff is the best to grow in this environment.

Your last point is of the highest importance, the modern crosses have been thought to be grown indoor or in very dry outdoor climate. I have no idea of the cost of electricity in Thailand but to grow those hybrids indoor it is necessary to have some control on the humidity level to avoid bud rot, it means a lot of watts dedicated to create a viable environment. It is of course much cheaper to grow outdoor in a country like Thailand but I guess not a lot of modern crosses can thrive in the humid thai climate. What is the weather like where you live, is it possible to grow all year long or the climate does not allow that? If I don't mistaken there is no 4 seasons like in Europe but a dry and a wet period?I'm curious about the new indoor scene appearing in this part of the world, some very interesting hybrids could appear when local farmers will cross the new seeds to the older lines for their ancestors.

I’m living in coastal northeast US. Cape Cod. If it’s not done by mid October it will most likely mold, but depends on how rainy the Fall is. Lat years was the driest in 150 years. The year before it rained 12 inches in September and I lost most of 25 plants to rot and mold. So I didn’t try that again this year and it ended up being super dry. It’s a gamble .

Thanks for clarification, I thought you were living full time in Thailand. I have grown outdoor at lat 44N in south west of France and I had the same time limit than you at Cape Cod, only a few airy enough flowers could go over mid october without bud rot. Each year is different so as you said it's a gamble, you choose the genetics who should do well in your environment but it never goes 100% as planned. One year it rained so much in June (25 days of heavy rains) it drowned some of my plants who were straight in the ground without root limitation, I had never seen something like that and never seen it again since.
I'm not very good at geography so I don't know what are the different types of terrains in Thailand, some must be suited for hybrids in dry season for sure.
I was down in Phuket recently , i had visions of things id seen 20 or so years back and wanted to see again , the islands around there etc ,
but like u said , completely over run with tourists , i hated it to be honest , nothing like i had seen a few decades ago , and yea plenty of weed shops , but i didnt even worry about checking them out , figuring they were just aimed at tourist dollars and likely over priced crap ...
the seasons are different on the southern islands , even around koh samui i noted the rain doesnt fall at the same time as it does in places inland and in the north east ,
the seasons are predictable there , and in the dry season one could certainly grow some hybrids outdoors that had chunk to them and avoid any mold issues ...
I saw the same as what you mention with the locals growing thai stuff in the back yards ,, not like they are going to buy overpriced hybrids anyhow, and as you also mention , its the easiest stuff to grow and takes much less care with the chance of success much higher ..
I always found during warm to hot times of the year , hybrids just make a person lethargic , sleepy and definitely not feeling like doing any work at all ,
where the pure sativas would stimulate activity and enhance any choirs one chose to do ..
i wonder if that well cured brick type of stuff , that has already changed color might be decarbed enough for usage already ??

There would still be good old school Thai genetics left, but you're not going to find them looking in dispensary or from people like KD or the people he knows like Pem.
He then spread those seed far and wide, a lot going to the North of Thailand.

Andy (RIP) lived in Thailand and had his hand on the pulse of the local scene for years, he told me most of it was crap and that included the locally grow Thai weed pre legal. But every now, and then he would come across some amazing old school Thai.
So it's still there, but you need to hunt for it.
Me too more than once in fact,
Just depends on how it's grown and handled as with any weed.
One batch was quite resinous and after chopping it continued to move ,
my mates wife called it dancing thai ,
seemed appropriate ...
Importantly , what i noted was the mind altering aspect that would also be summarised as tripping weed , was still there in some batches,
the care that was once taken with thai sticks doesnt seem to be common ,
but now and then its quite reminiscent of the good old stuff ...
Sure its not as it was , shit we are 40 years or more since those days ,
but you can still find stuff similar ,, if grown ones self in the right area , with the right care and attention to detail ,, definitely one could find the same stuff that made thai weed famous ...
