I have made rosin that is soft/pliable using flowers.. I'm curious now if I use my press with kief will it stay pliable?

If you were to take the same grade kief as your current chunk, and mechanically press it, I'm not entirely sure it would be any more pliable.
I say this because occasionally, I just pop some kief straight from the trim bin and press it up without further cleaning. And those chunks come out harder and less pliable.
Not every sample done like that, but most. But, in my case, those are the samples that maybe I wasn't the most gentle with.

But I AM just learning the craft. Every time I sit down and work it. Truly an art.

It def depends on the flowers I use. Most large runs are pliable. Smaller runs not so much.. I see a lot of pressed kief that ends up pliable. I don't know what micron there using. No one ever states that info.

It drove me fukn nuts, the lack of information and specifics. Lol. I was hitting up folks, trying to start conversations...like in the glory days, here. No one, especially anyone trying to make a "legal brand" will discuss shit!
But here's what I've learned from doing, a few things anyway:
1)seems most commercial hash, in Europe, is 150 micron. Been told that by 3 people who live, buy, and smoke there. Took me a year to find ONE person on IG who would answer that question, came back here and both people I asked answered immediately (thank you icmag). But from experience, as I stated, the technique, material, and strains used present in uncountable different forms and grades.
2)I like to increase my efficiency, yield wise, by being....not super gentle...lol...on the 150 screen(trim bin). BUT that requires that I clean it further on a tighter screen, unless I want a hard, harder to burn hash.
3) I am not a fan of "carding" over my 200 mesh count screen to clean it. I will use a brush instead of a card, and I will also "bounce" it around the 200 mesh count to clean it.
(Notice it's 150 micron and 200 mesh count, two different measurement systems. It's surprising how many stoners miss that in online conversation! Lol). This was brought to my attention by someone more knowledgeable than I, and affects the hash flavor by damaging "ventricles" or some shit.
4) I weigh the kief out of the trim bin, then judge the "cleanliness" by the % of weight I lose cleaning it on the 200 mesh bubbleman screen. 20% is a good place to start, and usually a minimum for me. (5g becomes 4g for example). At that point, I've never had a hash chunk that wasn't pliable or wouldn't become pliable with just a bit of rolling in my hands.
5) storage and curing. I still have so much to learn. Any advice on this, or the making of, should absolutely be taken as "this is what I do" and NOT as "this is the way to do it". I like to wrap it(now I just use a piece of turkey bag instead of parchment and saran wrap), put it in jar, store in cool dry place(not refrigerator cool), and cure it. At 1 month you notice a cured aroma and taste. And each month after. Better and better. And it will burn(melt) better. Smoke smoother. So fukn good. Placing in fridge won't hurt it, but will slow or stop the curing(which is degradation, technically)

If the buds are well cured, assuming one would use buds and not trim, would that mean the resulting hash would need less or no cure?

EDIT: To answer your question without rambling: I still cure the pressed hash. No matter how well cured the flower. I ain't scientifical enough to explain the process😆, but once those resins are ruptured and pressed, it seems to be a process completely separate from the flower cure. END EDIT.

From my limited experience so far, curing both is better.
Trim is actually easier/better for hash, IF you have enough. Lol. Easier to get the heads. I use both flowers and trim. If I know flowers are going to be hashed, they don't even get trimmed beyond what I take off at harvest.
When I use flower, it becomes a multi run job. I cure them then put them in freezer to prep for sifting. Pull them out and start breaking them up on the 150 micron. Put them back in freezer and repeat process. I actually keep the piles of kief separate, as you can see the cleanliness of the initial 150 kief start to lessen sift to sift as the flowers break down more each run. Great way to learn.
There are some who cure the flower, the kief, AND the pressed hash. I can vouch for the benefit of flower and pressed hash cures, once I've learned more I will speak on curing the resins by themselves.

Just smoked a bowl of cherry hash, had some random tips and pointers running thru my head. Let's see how many I can remember...lol...

I like bubble, rosin, bho, all of it. I don't know yet if my preference for dry sift, PRESSED dry sift, is purely sentimental from smoking it back in my formative years. But I do prefer it.

My approach to hash making is purely small grow, don't waste anything type attitude. I may spend extra time on a technique I wouldn't bother with if I was doing anything approaching commercial size.

I don't bother with the science, really. For the first 30-40 years I've been immersed there was no science, or very little. When it comes to hash..I just fukn do it. Little different each time.

I've done frenchy's hot water bottle technique. But I've got a rosin press now so.....
I have pressed chunks (2-5g) with the press at about 100°F. Pull it out, fold it up, press again, etc...have not done it enough times to "report" any "findings"...lol... But I will continue to try.

I enjoy very much working up to 3.5g by hand. You literally feel the change. Bring oils out. Get multiple aromas. Gives you information while you do it. I just don't know how to interpret all of it yet. I read about someone's technique, hand working until it was oily, putting away overnight, repeating once a day for 3 days, then putting away for months to cure. Read that when I first started seeking info. Don't remember all the details, but as it was an older hash maker, don't remember which country he was from in Asia, but it stuck and kind of became my baseline.

If you clean it beyond 150 micron, don't need 3 days of working as it can just stay oily, depending on strain and % cleaned.

Ok...I'm just stoned and rambling at this point

i've got a good amount of trim tray kief,i was wondering if it could be pressed into a slab...most of it is well aged so fairly dark in color...my rosin press doesn't have much pressure to it and i don't have mold so it seems like it would just make huge mess if i use my 6 ton press...

OK cool. I also have an affinity for dry sift, I have been able to make small amounts of full melt but I never really pressed or worked it, just kind of left it sandy and stored in parchment. It did get better over time.

With flower I feel like you would need to dry out the bud before this process, like take it out of any jars to get the material more brittle and release any internal humidity that would otherwise cause things to clump up when working it.

The only other tech that I would like to try one day, though I dont have the equipment is that live rosin. Wash a big batch with ice and extract with bubble bags, freeze dry that, and then press on a rosin press through a micron bag. They do that with fresh frozen as to retain the fresh terpines

Nothing new...just cure progress.
The trp 🍒 hash gotten to that minimum cure. The more square, darker piece, is an instant impact high. Almost perfect for pipe smoking by itself. Pinch a chunk, press between thumb and finger for about 10 seconds, place in any bowl.

The perfect pearl x Bluebonnet I went overboard on the cleaning for sure. Lol. But it's clean enough to dab..and the flavor from CURED, pressed, drysift hashish, dabbed is incredible.

How much trim are you generally running to make these chunks. Furthermore, how many times would you run in on the through the screens?

I just trimmed a small harvest, maybe 2 oz of bud at the most and only have a small pile of uncleaned heads from it. Just trying to get an idea of scale.

I have lots of other bags of trim that are very dry and ages I can play with but I wouldn't want to mix strains together if its avoidable.

Lastly I have some buds drying now that I pollinated for seed. Since they get broken up to find the seeds and are basically less desirable as buds I figured I would screen them all, any thoughts on quality issues from using seeded bud as a starting product to make hashish?

no problem with that ,
traditional hash are often made from seeded weed .

This is way off topic.......start of the tread. How did you like the Skunkdog S1 ? I ran some and they were super nice. I had a small one outdoors. 2 ounces. Ground it up and it's in my freezer in a tube. Gonna try and make some diamonds.

I get less than a 10% return by the time I clean it all the way down. Pretty sure. I haven't been weighing much of it as I deal w such small amounts nowadays

I love it
So good. Greyskull told me that he's found multiple s1s of skunkdog over the years that he likes as much or more. And I LOVE skunkdog. Top 5 all time for me.

Got to smoke some of greyskulls skunkdog that he grew in beautiful volcanic soil a few years ago. I love well grown outdoor.
