Straw as mulch

Be careful that the wheat straw doesn't have seeds! I had a horrible experience. Rice straw seems like the gold standard. It is seed free and breaks down slow. It l decomposes very slowly. Cheap to.

I noticed a few seeds here and there, Since putting it down I've noticed some sprouting, just looks like grass coming up out of the soil. Was wondering if i should pull the grass? Ive also noticed tons of little bugs, the plants look good and healthy the soil is staying pretty damn moist/wet. I waited 4 days since my last watering, cause it was still moist, The bugs kind of look like little mosquitos? wondering if they are good or bad bugs.

Would the straw really be necessary anymore once the plant is big enough to shade the soil?

I was thinking of top dressing soon with Guano, should i just pull the straw to the side do my top dress cover it back with straw and water in good? or just ditch the straw once the soil is completely shaded from the plants canopy?

Seed Whore
Cover the straw with guano and leave it.

The guano will feed the plants when it rains or you water the plants.

In time the straw will compost and make richer soil. :tiphat:

Yea. It starts with a couple sprouts. I would pull them. Make sure it doesn't go to seed again.
I had a helper that mulched my garden with it last year. By the time i saw it, it was to late. I pulled it up bit it already dropped seeds. Over the winter i think it seeded again. Might have to put down some weed fabric so the seeds sprout and die. Rice straw is super sterile. It's all i would use.
I second troutman. Just top dress on top. It doesn't matter of its shaded. It needs the mulch. Especially in my area. Keeping that top layer of soil moist is everything.
