Nagu, my dad had monkey brain stew on a business trip years and years ago to Beijing. That and fish blood soup, and fish ovary soup. Some Chinese delicacies are friggin' sick...

i have a theory that people in foreign countries fuck with americans by eating wierd stuff in front of them and making the yanks eat wierd stuff as well. when there are no americans around they all eat mcdonalds and hamburger helper. lol.

Some cultures eat bugs as a staple and are fine with it.
True, true. If I remember correctly, Laotians consider Termite Soup to be quite tasty. Dig 'um out of dead trees by the handfuls and cook 'um up. I believe the same folks also love Maggot Soup.

As for the dog meat thing, well, ya know, people also keep chickens, pigs, sheep, cows for pets and we still have no problem eating those. In fact, when i was really little up in MI when we lived on a farm, we had a pet sheep (Ebenezer) we raised like a dog an kept in the house. After the poor fella died a few years later (something to do with his heart, it was weak all his short life) we ate him.

I wonder if people would be so grossed out over eating dog and cat meat if they weren't regarded as pets and not kept as such.....I betcha no one would think twice about ordering a plate of feline BBQ, or canine burgers.

Human flesh tastes like pork.

At least, it smells like pork when it cooks or burns.....

As a chef, you learn these things when you burn the fuck outen yerself, and get to smell it.

I have developed some strange tastes. I like haggis (the innards of a lamb or sheep ground with oats and barley boiled in the stomach of the sheep), sweetbreads (calf's or lamb's thymus), elk, grizzly bear, and venison. As well as some really off the wall veggies like fiddlehead ferns and cactus leaves. I really liked durian the time i tried it, though the smell is horrid.

Venison, bear, and elk aren't really that weird...perhaps because I go hunting every year I say this. Fiddleheads are delicious, however despite being of scottish descent I can't even STOMACH haggis, the mere smell of it is nearly enough to make me puke. However props to those that can.

I love going do wn to the local fish markets, buying a lobster and eating him raw and still alive with a bit of wasabi, raw squid to is also the best but you must catch them yourself to be sure of the freshness. Squid just has this crunchy texture that just cant be beaten.

I have been privilged to meet some Torres Strait Islanders and they invited me to a local cook up to eat Dugong (sea cow) and sea turtle and turtle eggs when i was travelling around the top end of Oz. Turtle wasn't the greatest but I would eat dugong any day of the week if it was available and not endangered.

I am a big fan of dog from indonesia and just tried some sharks fin soup in HK which was pricy but really enjoyable.

I love grossing my friends out when we go to Yum Cha and only eating chickens foot, tripe , beef tendon and congeeled pigs blood.

Bring on the weird food.

Up the top end of Oz they make a haggis thing out of Dugong innards. I haven't tried it but I think I would love it.

As for Durian, the smell isn't that bad but I do find them a little creamy but they balance quite well with a mangosteen.

Oysters are the shit... nice combo I discovered when I was baked, tossed a tuna sandwich on top of a slice of pizza and it was dank as hell. I like miracle whip on saltine crackers, peanut butter and marshmallow creme, regular pringles with beer cheese... almost always have those around the house. Talking about animals to eat, pigs feet are good, I think alligator meat tastes like chicken but like a really good chunky nugget or something, I always grill my frog legs in foil with beer and cajun seasoning... haven't had anything far fetched from american culture that I know of off bat though.

Edit: oh ya, forgot to add turtle to the list... usually eat it at least a couple times a year. Tastes just like chicken imho, fry it up the same way. Can also find fresh morels in the mountains around here, batter, and fry those up... taste sooooo good.

All about the red soup in Dire Dawa Ethiopia....stay way from the yellow soup or you will be dying you bum hairs that color.

No idea what it was made of but it came with a slab of goat meat and a hunk of fresh bread followed by a cold beer from the Harar brewery which was actually quite good.

Probably blood based or something with some spicy stuff added.

Used to take chaps I was mentoring [training] to lunch and order alligator, told them they need to eat a preditor to help become a better one themselves.
