stealth cab in consturction with pics, input needed

hey, i have begun working on a stealth cab thats gonna house a 400 watt hps (in the process of remoting the ballast) which i will then turn it into a cool tube. the cab it self if 71in tall by 21in deep and 30 in wide. Ill be slowly building this more an more over the next few weeks with each pay check. Ive got the light, ordered the pyrex cool tube and have the cab put together and working on remoting the ballast, it is a 400watt switchable hps/mh ballast. ive got the cab weather stripped for ligh proofing. what all do you all think ill need for exhuast to keep the temps down, im trying to keep everything enclosed in the cab for better stealth, with only dark room vents for the intake and to cover the exhuast holes. Im going to run the cool tube to a carbon scrubber and then run it to a 4 inch hole behing a dark room vent to vent out side of the cab. i was thinking trying the stanley blower mod, with a few desk clip fan screwd on the sides in different places. i need to keep this thing quite since im in an apartment with neighbors. any and all input is welcome. also the grow will be soil and ill up date with pics often of the progress, i hope to have it up and running with in a few weeks time, already got the beans and itching to start.

a few small fans and the bigger Stanley could create a fair bit of noise. i would install them, power them up , see how the noise is, and go from there. your plan sounds do-able to me.

i got it from home depot. i had a cfl grow going on in a c-13 mills pride. but ran into problems and had to do a few years in prison and just got out febuary this year and i never did much with growing before just some airy buds not worth much for smoking and the yeild sucked. so im trying to start out right this time, i got this cab at home depot, i went looking for a c-24 mills pride but was told they dont carry them anymore, but in there place was a whole section of closet maids, this was the largest i could find and paid 90 for it but i was at home depot the othe day and seen one they have now thats larger, next time im there ill get the letter and number of the model. they have the same type of hinges as mills pride but mine has about a half inch gap in between the doors, so im still trying to figure out how im going to light proof it. since theres no way of adjust the doors to make them closer in the middle. thanks for all the input and help so far. more pics coming soon. also on the fan noise, the stanley blower will be ran through a carbon scrubber and ducting and i have room to place a fish tank or desk fan on top the cab to blame some of the noise on.

so when people say c-13 or c-24 they mean a mills pride cab?

you can get one sides trim stuff that comes in rolls to fill the gap at the hardware store

yeah, the c-13 and c-24 are mills prides cabs. and if you mean weather stripping to fill the gap its to big, its about a half inch gap.

the S&P fans are amazing.. i got the TD-100 in my cab got 300+ watts running and highest temp i have seen is 85.. Best part about it is you cant hear it at all.. even when your standing right next to the box it makes no sound.. To add to all that they are real cheap :) and to seal it maybe get a long skinny 2X2 about the height of your cab and add it to the middle of the cab so the doors close onto it. this way you will only need weather stripping... thats what i did on my last cab..

I agree with greenscreen, I just got a td-100 and it is quieter than my 4" vortec, only costs half as much and isn't way more power than I need.

Another idea for the door gap is to fasten a 2" strip of plywood to the inside edge of of one of the doors so the other door can close to it, much like exterior french doors do.

Looks like a great setup man! I can't wait to see what comes of it.

Sorry to hear about your troubles with your previous grow and the events that followed.

:badday:

As far as a blower goes: the 4" Vortex is powerful, cheap, reliable, and pretty quiet too. Since you're going to be cooling a 400 and pulling through a carbon filter, I would recommend something a bit more powerful than the S&P. Having temperatures of 85 degrees is a bit too much in my opinion.

To be fair: I haven't had experience with the S&P so I can't speak on it's behalf. But, I am familiar with the Vortex and it is a fine piece of machinery. It can be made quieter with a speed adjuster. If that's not quiet enough: go insulation.

There are some great DIY threads in the forums here about insulation boxes you can make for your blowers to minimize the noise of the air moving and the vibration of the fan. If you're concerned about noise: you should check these threads out no matter what direction you decide to go. The vibration noise is the one that will probably travel the furthest and possibly through walls so I'd be most concerned with that.

Anyway, welcome back (and to IC) and good luck in your travels! It looks like we're in for a fine show.

Ummm... he'd need a 10-inch version of the S&P to get up to 750CFM according to the link you provided:
For 10 inch round duct - 754/541 cfm (high/low).

He had mentioned around 4 inches which has the following rating:
For 4 inch round duct - 101/97 cfm (high/low).

The 4-inch Vortex, on the other hand, offers 172CFM for their 4-inch model which is near 75% more air movement than the S&P.

The 6-inch Vortex has a 449 CFM version which, again, knocks the socks off of the S&P 6-inch:
For 6 inch round duct - 293/218 cfm (high/low).

So yes, of course 750CFM is enough. In fact, it's more than enough. But I don't think he's looking for a 10-inch monster blower.

i think ima go with a 4 inch vortex. weres the cheapest place you guys have found em, or never mind ill look around. thanks everyone for all the help. im doing the remote ballast mod on the 400 hps/mh ballast, not much to take pictures of just yet. itll all progress a little more in the next few days, even more after pay day friday. i will get some pictures of what the light looked like after it was all taken apart, i still have to stop by home depot after work tomorow to grab a grounded cord.

well ive almost got the cab done, i got the light rewired to remote the ballast and i got my 4 inch vortex, ima mount that tonight. and ive got my cool tube made and ready to go. i got to get the dark rom vents and get the back of the cab on. the vortex is super loud, its mostly the rushing of air sound. i havent put the ducting on it yet, so i may get some insulated ducting for it and hope it quiets down once the carbon filter is on on side and the ducting on the other side going to the cool tube. ill get pictures of everything up im a few hours.
