Before I built mine, I considered building a bookshelf stealth.

The one I saw was partially hidden in a wall, though. Basically, half of the entire bookshelf was inside the wall, and the other half swung away from the wall on a big hinge. So if you looked at it, it'd look like a bookshelf pushed up against a wall... nothing suspicious. I'm a renter, so I couldn't do anything that would require tearing up the walls. So I built mine.

But of course, you don't want any secret room stuff, so I won't bother uploading the pic.

I think the secret room would be safer than the bunch of fake books, personally.

A bookshelf that really worked as a bookshelf -- without a mysteriously-titled book that you pulled as an unlocking mechanism -- would probably provide more security than one where all the books were just a facade. A secret-door-bookshelf is only likely to be found by someone who is looking for your secrets. A fake-book-facade-bookshelf could be discovered by anyone in your house that either #1) likes to read, #2) is nosey, #3) gets bored when you leave to use the restroom for a few minutes.

If you were looking for a secret door, you're right... bookshelf is the perfect place to look. But how often are you looking for a secret door in someone's house? Anyone who is in your house looking for your secret likely already knows your secret and is just seeking proof.
