Stashing the 'puter

Whole drive encryption does work but what if LEO wants the password? We must think "plausible deniability" here. See this XKCD link that explains my point exactly.

In my experience there is only one way that *might* work:

Use TrueCrypt to encrypt an entire partition on your hard drive. Then this partition is used to hold a virtual machine (see VMWare or VirtualBox). TrueCrypt itself is used from a small USB drive to keep it off the host machine.

The virtual machine is only used for our hobby. It has a complete operating system, browser, your pics and notes. The beauty part is when it gets shut down, the partition itself cannot be proven to hold anything. Its just all random data to an investigator. They cant prove anything is there. Thats why its important not to install TrueCrypt on the host box.

Just my .02c,

Great post, I think that may be where I failed, By having truecrypt itself installed on the pc I used.

Little more than 7 years ago I was raided, and 3 years prior a roomate was, but I lived there so I was fair game.
I wanna know how many people got their comps took from them during a ra id or messed with.
Neither times did they fuck with our comps.
Just curious.

P.s
as far as hiding a net book.
if you hide it they will find it.
Debatable? Yes, but in my experience they tend to mess your shit up real nice.
But they always miss the most obvious stuff. First time they left behind a dub of shrooms. You can imagine what I did when I got home.

If you're really paranoid about it, download a copy of Knoppix, or Puppy Linux and boot to them any time you are doing anything you feel uncomfortable with, these are live cd's and will leave no evidence of your activities on your computer.

Not to derail the thread but could anyone tell me if password protecting you computer is enough to keep the pigs out?

Just a plain password isn't enough. They could just boot from a USB or Live-CD and read the hard drive as if it were plain text, because it is.

Now if you encrypt the hard drive, they might not be able to read it. Which is to say that they might be able to break the encryption, but it's probably not worth it to them. It's a fairly expensive, time-consuming process. If they're grabbing your computer they've probably already got so much evidence against you it isn't necessary. But you'd still be fried.

Either way, the last time I checked it was still a criminal offense to refuse to give your encryption password to the police, so you'd just be stacking charges. You could try "plausible deniability," but I've never heard of it actually helping anyone. You'd need to set up two operating systems, one legit and apparently used, for it to be of much use.

It's more important to protect your IP address (via Tor and Proxies; Spurr has a few good tutorials) and encrypt your communications with servers via https than to hide the things on your computer. That way, your internet provider can't rat you out.

If you're worried about using ICmag on your computer, try TAILS. It's a live-cd (and USB, I believe) that runs everything through Tor without you needing to set it all up. That way, nothing is saved on your computer and no one knows where you are. The install isn't difficult. Pendrive linux should be able to install it, although they don't specifically mention it on their website. Or you can just burn it to a cheap cd-r.

I live in a single room with a cabinet. I don't keep anything incriminating on it,photos or records.

So I'm not gonna be worried about the computer.
Your scale is another matter.

^^ This is worth repeating.

Any scale, fruit, digital, kitchen, postal, or otherwise will likely be far more damning in the case of LEO involvement than a few pictures on the computer. Perhaps it isn't such a big deal in medical states, but in non-med states it used to be the difference between a possession and a distribution charge in the case of small quantities. Then again, photos of other grow locations, larger numbers of plants, or record keeping (sales or otherwise) could, I'd guess, be used as proof against the old "It's my first time" leniency plea.

If you absolutely must keep records, and are tweaking about having them in your house, you might check out SpiderOak. It's a cloud storage system that was created in response to the security problems with DropBox. They claim "zero-knowledge" of the data on their servers and offer a program which encrypts and compresses the data before it ever gets uploaded. You could also use their browser interface, but they don't recommend it for things that need to stay secure. You get two gigs (expandable to fifty if you sign up new users) for free forever.

Just to give some more peace of mind, check out secure deletion of files. Full disk encryption before data ever touches the platter is better. But if paranoia attacks, at least the data will be gone. DBAN isn't bad, but it wipes the whole hard drive. I've used srm on linux and Eraser on windows for spot cleaning after encrypting files. BCwipe is great for you *BSDers out there, but you guys already know that.

we both know your keyboard reeks of mj . a dog will hit on it thinking its weed. with all the time i spend on ic smoking weed i bet a dog could find my keyboard quick

I hear this alot and dont understand the dog and the resin deal. If I'm handling a large amount of the sticky and going about my life ...then wouldnt the dog just hit on everything.

My remote, my keys, my steering wheel, books, toothbrush, the walls, cabinets and anything else I've had my grubby hands on? Hell.. the dog just might as well sit down and just bark.

- -

The only safe hard-drive is one that has been removed and physically destroyed..and then tossed in a lake...

- -

They are all about making it look larger and worse then it is. In regards to the scale... better believe they will grab that kitchen or bathroom scale on the other side of the house..toss it next to some leaf trash, some legitimate PB&J baggies and tack on the inflated weight and distribution charge. Its a given. No bullshit I've literally seen LEO photos post bust that showed a regular bathroom scale. They'll tack on every charge they want ..hoping one will stick or you'll plea out to one to get the others dropped.
