I've noticed more and more people seem to be skipping funerals these days, no doubt due to rising costs, and opting for cremation followed up by a "future get together" to celebrate the person that passed. Not sure how I feel about it, but what are you going to do. It just is what it is I guess. 😐

Is that what happened with your buddy? Did they skip his funeral?

How’s the weather in your area of Japan ? .............I’m at 42.5780° N,
75.0611° W
So I googled 42N US. And was reading that the straight lines on some of the stars like California at 42N are because it was part of Spanish Mexico before that and wasn’t incorporated until 1850 into the USA. I didn’t realise the US was so young in its present form. In their present forms Australia and NZ are older

It’s a shame we’ve gone so down:peek: so quickly as a country
Might be a bit controversial (I’m ready for the flaming :) ) but I think the US and China and Russia and a few others, are just Too big. If they were split up it would be more in the local people’s interests and would balance the world power dynamic more evenly. Just a thought

When in my mid-20s had a Swedish girlfriend her name was Eva Martin. I went to Stockholm twice (she was an au pair here in US. ) I followed her back there …parts of the old town there are over 700 years old !
Yes my in-laws house is ~350 years old, the property has been in their hands even longer.
I visited a kurgen style grave site yesterday on my hike that was 1400 years old. I’ve found these in the bush all over place but this one was big, people buried with plates and swords and worldly good etc. the mountain is full of them near spiritual power locations.

Yeah....They said there would be something in the future....but who knows maybe there won't . I just feel like you don't really get a chance to say goodbye. And I understand, if you don't have the money you don't have the money. Dunno... I think I'm just mad that everything in this country has gotten so expensive that you can't even have a proper funeral. Before long we are going to end up displaying the persons body in the front room of the house and burying them in the backyard like the old days.

Yes there’s a lot of people here for such a small landmass. Hard to find a quiet spot. I bet it’s much easier in Canada ;)

The cherry blossom season is cool.

One of the best times to go for a lunch, or a lantern lit evening, picnic in the park. Everyone is doing the same thing.
You can drink in the parks and in public here so it has a nice festive atmosphere. Japanese drinking culture is very orderly and well behaved always with food.

How is the weather in BC ?
Is it deep snow all winter?
The weather varies with the different regions. The closer to the southern coastal area the less likely for snow and more inclined for rain during the winter months. Also cooler in the summer than the interior were I live. It can get hot where I live, it can get up into the 40C range in a hot year but into the 30C range is typical. We have low humidity usually because it is a semi-arid area. We have some natural cactus, sagebrush, scorpions and other flora and fauna associated with semi-arid areas.

Population per sq k for Japan is 336 people for BC it is 5 people
I wouldn't call drinking in BC as always being orderly. It's been a long time since I've drank any alcohol.
Lots of festivals and concerts during the summer months.

Would never have thought anywhere in Canada gets so hot. That’s like Australian style temperatures. Sounds great for growing hash plants.

That 336 per km2 is deceiving too cause most people live in the cities. Rural towns are mostly half abandoned now.

That pile of weeds is an old house that’s collapsed and been reclaimed by Mother Nature.

Many abandoned houses and buildings where you are?

Towns that grew on resource extraction can go boom and bust, leaving behind empty or half empty towns.
The hottest temp in BC was recorded at 49.6C in 2021

Time to make some pork fried rice for supper. The wife is giving me the I'm hungry look.

I know how you feel Jenn. My best friend died a few, well more than a few I guess by now, years ago. During covid. His asshat family which never spoke to him had him turned to dust in record time, emptied his bank accounts, pilfered anything worth anything from his apartment and then threw a "celebration of life" at his apartment, with the remainder of his beer. What a bunch of shit.

I never got to say goodbye, closure, nothing. I did however get the things he told me to get in the event of his demise. Those bastards didn't get it all.

Once everyone left I stayed and drank his last beer and listened to some tunes he wrote and his band. I have that empty beer can on my desk. I have all the music. All the memories.

That's really all we can do right? It's the family's call and we just have to deal. I threw a party the following Summer and had a proper send off. He would have liked that, the cops came and told us to turn down the amplifiers and people were hammered singing everywhere. Just how he would have liked it.

I feel your pain and I'm sorry you are going through it. I hope today gives you a happy memory and a laugh!
