Even a 4x4 truck can be useless in the winter without weight.
:good: no weight in the bed? not a prayer, might as well save your money for tow trucks, because just 4wd will lull you into a false sense of security right up to the spot where you run off the road/hit someone/something. even a jeep CJ can use a bit. used to lug a few bags of mixed sand/gravel in mine for ballast & worst case traction aid. carried a shovel, come-along, and an axe too.

I love my Subaru with all weather tires for winter driving, it handles the winter mountain roads and if you drive with caution you should get where your going. We have highway laws that forbid driving on some roads, like my area roads without a tire that has snow peak icons on the tire, from Oct1st to the end of Mar31st, or chains and or studs.
I love my Subaru!

We have seasonal roads around here where they just leave them alone all winter ❄️
we've got idiots here that don't understand "ROAD CLOSED!" signs. have to have gates up, or these imbeciles go out there anyway. lately, i'm finding locks cut on gates/gates pulled down in National Forest & evidence of major horseshit. trees cut, trash everywhere, serious damage/rutting in wet areas. i think i'm going to start driving spikes into the ground in the mudholes these asshats dig.

Nobody respects anything anymore. Idk it’s a crazy world out there.
nervous for this year ...at the age I’m at I really wish I felt like I had everything settled and worked out but I’m just winging it day to day

Another Gray Day of snow flurries. I mean it’s been six weeks or more continuous …it’s hard to stay cheerful without sunlight but I’m doing pretty good…. It was real light therapy going into a packed grow room brightly lit with HPS in the middle of the winter. miss it…(not the drudgery of it, but the positive feelings)

Certainly not going to save any money buying chickens as opposed to eggs. Unless you have access to free chicken food. I think we go thru a $18 bag every two weeks or so. Then there is the straw and in my case, my wife likes to feed them dried meal worms at $30-$40 a bag. We tried growing our own meal worms once. Stinky endeavor.
I will say the quality sure is worth it. Maybe if you just 3 or 4 hens it could be a break even situation.

Around here there are jeep trails that are seasonal.

Vietnam flash back sounding kind of thing you're talking about doing there. Well, that's the image that fills my brain when I hear that kind of talk. It's kind of like when people talk about "spiking" trees.

I've kind of always wanted chickens, maybe six. I am at Tractor Supply every week so yeah I know the expense. They will not be getting meal worms though, maybe red wigglers in the summer. My friend from my "youth" grows his own meal worms and even that isn't worth it to me.

I do eat six eggs a day though. I eat a very high protein diet. It will give Buffy the feral cat something to watch as well.
