Its the fungal infection at the soil line. Just use a q tip with some Peroxide and clean that area.

Exactly. Alcohol will work too - it dries out the fungus, or whatever is causing the plant to damp off - so they die and the plant can recover from there.

I saved a plant once that way, but it was older and bigger. It took a long time for it to recover though, I think because the cellular damage to the stem killed almost all of the cambium that transports nutrients and water. The best that could be done was to wait for the grow tip to slowly grow out to cloning size and then clone it, because the stem underneath was basically dead and could not support more growth than that. But it worked!

Yours is at the stage that, in addition to doing Hammerhead's q-tip trick what CannaRed said is the way to go - clone it.

But, yours also looks like it has a fresh root growing out of the stem that had the problem. That suggests you may have already successfully treated whatever pathogen caused the damping off and all you have to do is plant it in pathogen free soil that's drier than before. At some point you should see new growth and you might have to clone the new growth.

I suppose a seedling that young might be able to regenerate the damaged cells better than an older seedling - not sure on that one - I've only dealt with damping off on older seedlings.

But, I do know that little one to two inch seedlings with an otherwise healthy root/stem can easily be cloned if it happens to be snapped off from its root stock when you do a klutz move and drop it on the floor! I just put some clonex on him and stuffed him back into the same cube the rest of him was in (later turned out to be a male). It ended up growing a new tap root and grew out just as well as his siblings.

I was never supposed to be alive in a first place  I just found a seed in one of the nugs when i was rolling on the kitchen table. It was from the plant that i really liked but lost it in reveg. I didnt think much of that seed because it looked pale and undeveloped so i just threw it into one of the herb pots my wife keeps on the table.

After few days i noticed seedling but it was showing signs of damping off. I just cut it right above where the stem was thinning and put it in water. what you see on the pic is the new root after about 2 weeks :). The whole process took awhile but damn i never imagined you could clone 3-4 day old seedling, i guess that why they call it weed:biggrin:
