It’s genetic variation I guess
Googled it
Black squirrels are the result of interbreeding between gray and fox squirrels.
The faulty pigment gene that causes black fur is identical to that found in fox squirrels.
The black fur may be a selective advantage for living in colder regions
    • Biologists estimate that only one squirrel in 10,000 has a black coat.

never see black squirrels here in Central New York ..where I grew up in North Stamford Connecticut there was a substantial population in minority of the black squirrels but I have to tell you the black squirrels & the gray squirrels did not get along W/ each other’s space.
In my part of Western North Carolina, there's a town that has an inbred population of white squirrels:

Here in south central BC I have only seen the red squirrel. For a few years I didn't see any squirrels in my neighborhood. The people who trapped them have moved away and this past year I seen a couple of red squirrels, the first in 4-5 years.
Squirrels can get a bad name for their habits.

Have encouraged both gray and black squirrels to make their homes nearby. The reds are not allowed on the feeders. Always wondered the blood line of these blacks. I figure they have more gray than red genes contributing to the color.
Maybe Fishy can chime in. He seems to know a bit about these things.

Apparently they are picky about where they live. We have tons of red squirrels here. About 40 minutes away the black squirrels are all over and everywhere north. It's been that way as long as I remember.

Look I have to ask ......why?
Is he poor or is it cultural?
Well, he and his family were originally from the Appalachia of West Virginia and it's just kind of the way it was. He moved on, went to college, became in actor in NY and then moved to Michigan and became a teacher. Guy is smart as a whip, but he still loves squirrel. One of his top three favorite foods he always tells me.

Want too .. I kept them in a 300 gallon stock tank till that first bitter cold wave came through that’s when I threw them indoors in the tub is a temporary solution (That’s nuts in itself I know ) ..they were originally $.20 feeder fish for my pet turtle but that was five years ago now they turned into pets themselves ...

I don’t remember 100% perfect but someone told me that if you’re going to eat squirrel it’s really gamy unless you soak it first in salt water or something like that ...The dude was a real outdoorsy do it yourself or type of guy and he was a hunter/trapper (so I believed him)
