Sour Diesel IBL & NYC Diesel?

At the moment its Diesel this and Diesel that..... Its a shit storm of varieties available on the market.

I have SSH and I am looking in the next few months to add the next premium strain in my personal garden.

I am looking at Sour Diesel IBL by Rez and Soma's NYC Diesel

Now...

Can anyone tell me what the highs are like? Difference being?

Better of the two? Yield is not a major issue. I am looking for the best of the best for my $

Basically I wanna hear from the people who have a lot of experience growing and smoking various strains. The veteran tokers who know their quality green!

Finally , what would you rather buy instead of these strains? and why? if you were prepared to drop up to $200.

Thanks guys

SSH, ECSD, and a particular phenotype out of soma's NYCD all hold spots in my all time top 5 smokes.

each is a unique flavor, but if i was in your shoes id jump on the SD IBL... 2+ packs if ya can.

run all of the seeds at once--
take cuttings of each and keep in veg until you smoke test each phenotype and can select a mother.

have a good grow :)

oh, and, here's a basic run-down on the diesels....

'NYC Diesel' (aka: Original Diesel/Headband/Daywrecker/Diesel#1) is a fuely, 'kushy' type of plant, available as a clone ONLY.
Like it's cousin, the 'East Coast Sour Diesel' cut, it was once pretty hard to get outside certain east coast circles; but now can be found country-wide if you know the right people. AFOM still buys the herb on the regular through a certain clique in NYC. It is sold simply as 'Diesel'.

this brings us to the next part of the story...

Back in the 1990's the breeder, Soma, in Holland, germinated and grew a lone bagseed out of some pot he bought in NYC called "Diesel." He crossed this Bagseed plant to a male cutting gifted to him by Shanti (afghani/hawaiian), and called the resulting progeny "NYC Diesel"

confusing. i know. well, here's where it really gets fun...

RezDog used Soma's NYCD seed line as the initial outcrossing for the ECSD clone to start his breeding program, so you may see some similarities between SD IBL and Soma NYCD beans. Basically, RezDog took Soma's gear (citrusy funk) crossed it to the ECSD clone (a unique fuely lemony candy funk), grew out the resulting progeny, backcrossed to the ECSD, selected again, BX'd again, then again...
what he was left with was a pack of seeds with a 100% probability of finding at least one plant with smoking qualities synonymous to the East Coast Sour Diesel clone.

Soma's 'NYCD' seed strain, and Sour Diesel are nothing alike, aside from the common Diesel ancestor.

Both are great smokes, but if you want consistancy, or, at least a guarantee of capturing the flavor that IS sour diesel, go with the Rez gear. Soma's NYCD does not smoke like Diesel, in my experience, but is good in it's own right. It is also a polyhybrid, so you will have some variation in the grow.

if i were growing for flavor, id pick Sour D.
if i wanted the best quality seeds for my money, id pick the Soma gear over Rez's.
I can not say i have had much success with germination rates on Rez's SD IBL...and those that do make it have been mutants. The Soma seeds may be better but if its that ECSD funk you seek, get the SD IBL and just buy extra in case you have a problem... not the easiest to grow thing on the market... maybe he inbred them too far... maybe he made the seeds under CFL's.... maybe its just a fluke batch... whatever it is, he wouldnt be able to get away with it if Sour Diesel wasnt so unique and sought after.

good luck with whatever you choose to buy :) take care

Reservoir's Sour Diesel is much, much different from Soma's NYC 'diesel'.
NYCD is NYC bagseed x Afghani/Hawaiian,Reservoir's Sour Diesel is the product of more than three years of progressive refinement and breeding,to isolate the finest characteristics of the original Sour Diesel Clone. So far,it's been a great Project, with wonderful results.

Cheers!

Yes, great post ethereal. My personal experience is somewhat different, but that's just the way it is.
I've grown both NYCD and Rezdog's Sour Diesel V3 (the earlier release of the SD IBL). I grew NYCD about six years ago, so I'll have to dig through my notes to come up with something useful to say about the grow itself. But I remember that the germination rate could have been better, there was a range of different phenos, and I had hermie issues with some of the plants.
I grew the Sour Diesel a couple of years ago, the germ rate was 100%, no hermies or nanners whatsoever, even though it was a rather sweaty summer grow, with heat stress and a serious spider mite attack.
From the NYCD, I kept the stinkiest grape-pheno. I must say that I love the smell of NYCD, I can't actually think of another strain I rather choose over the grape pheno.
I know a lot of people go for the Sour Diesel smell. I appreciate it, and that's about it.
Both NYCD and SD has yield potential, depending on pheno. The SD V3 has more pheno variety than the IBL, but the ECSD pheno is in there. It is not the highest yielding one though, and I kept a pheno that yields double to the ECSD pheno, with less SD feel to it.
At the time, Rezdog's beans were about half price to Soma's (it has changed), so for me, the SD was the best value buy.
Over the years though, I've come to appreciate the NYCD perhaps a tad more than the SD. The smell, the feel. None of my friends - except a few chronic smokers - like the SD. They think it's too strong, too racy, too out of control, so it's something I smoke alone. The NYCD is liked by most people I know, even girls (lol). Not to say it isn't strong, just a less aggressive high, IMO.
