Soundproofing and water proofing a room

Ok so i wanna learn this early on. If you live in like lets say a Apartment situation, or a Duplex situation. Where you are sharing walls. Noise is giong to be a issue with a major hydroponics system or any grow room fans etc.... so i was thinking we could sound proof a room?

has anyone done this... if so please let me know how. Also

water proofing. what if i get a leak? should i use like Kiddie pools around my buckets DWC style, and around my Rez... just incase of puddles? i dont see that working out well with hoses and shit...

and advice would be lovely thanks.

As far as the leaking goes - just lay down a bunch of visqueen plastic and layer it - then duct tape it so that there are no open flaps ...

For sound - dont really know about that one - i'm looking for an idea as well ... I understand the whole egg carton on the wall thing however thats just for acoustics so the sounds dont echo within the room - but as far as preventing travel of sound waves through walls - i dont quite know.

Might wanna try some styrofoam sheets on the walls...it'll insulate the area from sound and temps, is pretty cheap and won't retain moisture like cork. You can build a tray to go under the pots from a 2x4 frame and some 8ml plastic stapled to it.

Mount any fans by suspending from bungees and mount your ballasts off the floor away from the shared wall.

Either out the window or keep the area sealed and suppliment with CO2.

thick sheets of styrofoam ( at least an inch), with some thick eggshell foam nailed over that (eggshell foam like for matresses)

At least that's a common way to sound proof home recording studios. Styrofoam may actually resonate some vibrations though, so if you can you should nail on layers of canvas or a blanket before the eggshell layer that'll help a lot.

Or maybe fill the cavity in the wall with liquid foam

For waterprrofing go with EPDM pond liner.... It's thick rubber made for roofing but it's used in ponds as well...
I think it's almost a 1/4 inch thick so it should do the trick.... Any good thick pond liner will help with spills...
Then contact cement each length together along the sides so the seams don't leak...

No you'll need a solid 8 inches or so of cork. I was kinda kidding when I said that, cork used to be used to muffle sound back in the 1800's and such for politicians. Never know when someone could be spying on you. It's really not very practical and not all that funny looking back on it.

for true soundproofing you should try local music shops, or theatre supply company's. i was going to recommend the egg crating ,but someone beat me to it. i agree with the pond liner . hope his helps." umphree mcgee " kicks ass huh man ? about the venting ,crank up the ac all day everyday and lots of fans. in case you dont have the co2

get a house without a sharing wall LMAO!

take these guys advice regarding foam and frame... that was my initial idea... or carpet pad will work to... but not 100 percent... get the 1/2 inch foam carpet stuff if possible. and staple it on...

for future referance, egg boxes are as good as if not better at soundproofing.
collect them up, flatten them down and stick them to whatever you want to soundproof.

...might wanna open a few windows after going through all those eggs... :moon:

Yes, you can cut holes in the wall, I have and will again. If your growing and you want to do it right you must cut holes in the walls, its not hard to fix once your done. Check out my bio bucket grow in my sig to see an apt. grow with holes in the wall. I also had a next door neighbor on the other side of that wall, all I did was made sure I bought the nicest and quietest fans on the market which is a Fantech. I also had a portable A/C right next to the wall where the neighbors apt was. I always tripped about the noise but it honestly wasn't a problem and I know they couldn't hear anything. I went with a hydroponic system that had no air stones and just a water pump, which helped with noise. YOu can also hang your water pump in the water so it isn't planted on the bottom of the res, if your on the second floor, which is what I did. I've done apt grows many times and have never had any problems. So take this information for what its worth.

As for lining your floor with poly or plastic, that is definitely something you should do if your on the second floor, you can read why in my bio bucket thread. I was planning on doing that but forgot after I'd gotten everything set up, boy was that a mistake.
