I started this girl outside and now she's in a greenhouse under some lights and she'll be done soon.. here's the grow thread if you want to see more:
http://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=70804

Basically I just want to know what these brown little spots are.. they're only on this branch of the plant and doesn't seem to be a big deal.. I'm just mostly curious.

Now here you can see that the stem going to the bud died, I don't know why, but it happened 1 other place on the plant aswell, the only thing I can think of that was the same ino both spots was that I pinched off a yellow fan leaf that was right under the stem.. in the pic the little nub that was left from the lead has since dried and fallen off, but I put an arrow to where it was.. did this somehow make an air bubble or something and kill the bud above it? what the best way to pinch off a leaf without hurting the plant?

Thanks for the help, here's nice macro shot.. lots more in the other thread..

The best way is to clip the petoile about half way between the base of the fan leaf and the stem...leaving the half petoile to dry up and fall off on its own. Stripping or breaking off the petoile right at the stem can expose the stem to higher risk of infection.

Looks like some kind of a micro nute def like manganese, but as you said she'll be done soon anyway.

Can you answer these questions?

ARE YOU USING?

SOIL:
What STRAIN are you growing?
What was the establishing technique? (seed or clone?)
What is the age of your plants?
What PHASE (seedling, vegetative or flower) are the plants in?
What Technique are you using? (SOG, SCROG etc)
What size pots are you using? (Include how many subjects to pot)
What substrate/medium are you using? (percentage of perlite, vermiculite...etc?)
What Nutrient's are you using? How much of each? *Knowing the brand is very helpful*
What is the TDS/EC/PPM of your nutrients used?
What is the pH of the "RUN-OFF"?
What method of pH test was administered?
When was your last water?
When was your last feeding and how often are you feeding?
What size bulb are you using?
What is the distance to the canopy?
What is your RH Factor? (Relative Humidity)
What is the canopy temperature?
What is the Day/Night Temp? (Include fluctuation range)
What is the current Air Flow? (cfm etc.)
Is the fan blowing directly at plants?
Is the grow substrate constantly wet or moist?
Is your water HARD or SOFT?
Has plant been recently pruned, cloned or pinched?
Have any pest chemicals been used? If so what and when?
Are plant's infected with pest's?

Thanks 10k, that really helps.

Do you really think your copy/pasted list helps out someone like me?

..maybe you didn't see the fact that this is my first grow, I'll answer what I can...

SOIL:
What STRAIN are you growing?
bagseed

What was the establishing technique? (seed or clone?)
seed

What is the age of your plants?

started in may outside, now in greenhouse.

What PHASE (seedling, vegetative or flower) are the plants in?

obviously flower

What Technique are you using? (SOG, SCROG etc)

obvious
What size pots are you using? (Include how many subjects to pot)

I dunno, a foot in diameter and a foot and a half tall.

What substrate/medium are you using? (percentage of perlite, vermiculite...etc?)

umm.. dirt?

What Nutrient's are you using? How much of each? *Knowing the brand is very helpful*

some flower blooming stuff in the greenhouse

What is the TDS/EC/PPM of your nutrients used?

wha?

What is the pH of the "RUN-OFF"?

I don't water it enough that some runs off? I have a hot-tub ph test strips?

What method of pH test was administered?

none.

When was your last water?

When was your last feeding and how often are you feeding?

3 days ago, each time I water, every 5-6 days.

What size bulb are you using?

3x42watt fluoro and 1x11watt

What is the distance to the canopy?

look and see.

What is your RH Factor? (Relative Humidity)

whatever it is outside.

What is the canopy temperature?

dunno.

What is the Day/Night Temp? (Include fluctuation range)

dunno, there's a heater in there though so it won't get too cold at night.

What is the current Air Flow? (cfm etc.)

none, 1 plant in a big space though.

Is the fan blowing directly at plants?

no. should I put one there?

Is the grow substrate constantly wet or moist?

I let it dry out so it's just barely moist before I water again.

Is your water HARD or SOFT?

soft.

Has plant been recently pruned, cloned or pinched?

no. other than the dead bud I plucked off.

Have any pest chemicals been used? If so what and when?

no.

Are plant's infected with pest's?

no.

Shafto, yup we know many of us take time to help new growers out like you; so we just want to get as many answers as possible about your grow; reason for this is,because we can give you a better diagnosis of what is going on with your grow. You are the grower; so we relay on YOU for the information to be as accurate as possible; otherwise you get the answer to all the questions you answered for us... so you do not answer many questions ... you get a bad diagnosis and only guess work......I am going to try to keep this post simple without going into technical stuff.........

Reason why we asked for brand is,because certain soils are considered soil-less and others are just "dirt" :)

They both have different ph ranges, soiless needs ph range of hydro which would be in the range of 5.5 to 6.3, and "dirt" 6.5 to 7.0

Many times when you get a rare micronutrient deficiency 9 times out of 10 it's occured, because of either to much of a kind of nutrient in your mixture/soil or because yor pH is not adjusted right or is going up and down.

Different nutrients have a range that they are absorbed properly; which thus you need to keep it in this range for your plant to flourish healthy and get all available nutrients in the soil.

REason why we need to know your brand of nutrient is, because lots of them are not right for cannabis and can cause an imbalance...... anything over 20 for a NPK ratio is to much.... and most of the time it will end up being something for trees or shrubs which you want to stay away from; they contain to much P for cannabis.

How often you pump your plant full of nutrients matters greatly; again it ends up causing a buildup in your soil mixture and you get micronutrient deficiencies and end up getting NPK issues and upsets the entire balance of your plants absorption.

Another thing; depending on the size pot you are using..... you need to water your plants to where you do get some run off once in a while.... now if you have a small plant in a big pot; you can't do this..... you will contribute to over watering your plant and you shut down a lot of o2 to your plants roots; which is why it's important to use a lot of drainage in your soil... perlite.. vermiculite.....

You definatly need to test pH, when you grow with your next plants; it's extremley important you have to be kept in the ranges I gave you in this post.....
Your soil could be acidic right now which lock out things.... your yield is also decreased when you do not keep a balance.... So there could be so many things wrong, because you do not know much about growing..... sounds like you did not do much research into this........

So yes we know all about new growers... one thing we do hope for is that before jumping into growing, that the grower does at least some research before putting seeds into dirt..... It will cause a WHOLE lot less heartache later on.......

Well it was kind of spontaneous, If I was setting up grow op I would research. I just threw this bagseed up on my monitor in some paper towel in the spring, it sprouted in a few hours and I planted it.. Doing pretty well overall I think. (if you look at the grow thread)

now those spots might be some weird deficiency... but what about the bud dying? was that from me pinching the leaf below? why else would it just start dying like that?

Pinching of the leaves is NOT going to cause buds to die.... deficiencies can cause lower yield, and not to properly form, but for them to die... the only thing that comes to mind is bud rot... is your buds turning brown and mushy?

no.. they're fine I think? they look fine, and smell wonderful. the bud didn't actually die.. it was still fine.. but it was starting to.. only because the stem feeding it died.. look in the pic.. the whole side of that big stem died, but the other side of it is still alive and feeding the cola thankfully.. but that one area.. where the shoot came off to that small bud, all died.. I dunno why.. I think it must be because of the fan leaf I took off there.. I just pinched them with my fingers.. now I gently cut them.. I'm not positive but I don't know why else that would happen.. I'm not pro but my logic tells me that's not a nute thing.

Shafto, couple things- That list of questions MNS posted up is more important than you might think- it doesn't help to snap at someone legitimately trying to help. Stitch IS the 'plant-whisperer'...

Were those brown spots starting when the plant was still outdoors?
Was it exposed to a frost at any time?
Did you go through an extended period of very cold rain before bringing it in?
Looking up and down all the stems, so you see any streaks of dark brown, almost black, especially in proximity to the branch that died?

In the pic where you show the junction of the main stem and the side growth with the red arrow drawn in, that looks to me like a fungal issue.
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say you got COLD and WET at some point... also, insufficient potassium in the plant's diet will depress its immune response and allow disease to take hold more quickly and under less unfavorable conditions than could be survived by a better-fed plant.

I didn't mean to snap, I just looked at the huge list of general questions and felt like I was trying to call my bank or something with all the automated options and no real help... I see that's not the case now.

They were brought inside at the end of august, weather was still nice.. I brought it in before the rain.. and that was a long time ago. It has been rained on, but not for over 2 months, and it's never been cold. No brown/black streaks.. the spots started inside, and def no frost.. haven't even had any of that outside yet.

lol. Hey I am your neighbor..... better get some better stuff put on that window I can see your grow from here ;)

Trust me, pinching off a leaf is not going to cause the bud to rot; unless you disturbed the branch that had the bud on..... like partly break it. If it's not mended, depending on the break then yes the bud will die, because the branch it was on had it's vascular structure disturbed to where it was not getting enough to live.
