I would have just given them bud blood. Doesn't do any of the fancy shit they claim but does control stretch, its the only thing i use it for.

well if you are weary of tearing off too much you can tie the branches out away from each other to open the canopy.
With where you are in flower as long as they are showing signs of development you can start thinning. That usually is a good indicator that their transition is nearing the end.

If it's a game of inches, you can usually trim 2 or 3 inches off the bottom when you re-pot or up-pot.
