Get them off the cold concrete floor would help some, you could put them on top of upside down pots.

maybe wrap your pots in insulaton, then put some carpet down on the floor then some plastic over it so you dont ruin it when you water.

senseless... that makes a lot of sense thanks dude... i was looking into the heating mats and they say it will only raise the temp a couple of degrees from the temp of the room... now if the room is too cold will it be able to get it where the soil needs to be?

the 1 i pinted out will keep the temps 15-20degrees warmer then ambient temps and is made for green house propogation. carpet on the floor the heat mat ya should be set then

i use to live in the north where snow flys, the basement temps stayed at about 60* at light off times and 76-78 light on. i had no problems growing then but i had 3/4'' foil backed insulationon the walls and on the floor foil in, the floor i put the foil down - to dang bright with the foil up. i used no heat pads, the basement did have two vents that went into the basement at the other end. house temp was set at 72.

at most if your in the north the temps in a poured wall basement shouldent get below 55*-60* if it has heat set around 72* in the house above.

i would make sure the plant area is inclosed, if next to a wall use the foil back insulation 3/4''. use the same thickness on floor and the girls should be fine. the temp swing i had then was good even with outside temps at 0.

the light was 600w as well.

zigg - yea the room isn't insulated at all... im def gonna put some carpet under the box.. thanks for the help guys

well i got a temp meter from my scorpion tank and the room is 68 degrees and inside the box its 81... so i guess my temps are alright... i think the problem is something else... i think the soil maybe too hot because some of the leaves are getting brown and crusty... i didnt use my normal mixture which is 50% Fox Farms Ocean Forest 25% vermiculite and 25% perlite... this time i did 75% Ocean Forest and 25% perlite with no vermiculite... i think i messed up :badday:

to be honest i wouldnt use carpet, if it gets wet it might mold on ya and cause problems... i like the 4 x 8 sheets cut to the floor size, makes clean up easy just pull the plants and vacuum. but thats up to you, just make sure its nothing that can mold...

good luck

the concrete is as porous like a sponge and unless felt paper/40 lb roofing paper is put down 1st (vapor barrier). as the weather outside changes and the amount of water in the air and soil goes up or down so will it in the basement.

putting carpet on bare concrete floor will cause the moister to trap in/under the carpet and soon will mold. only one thing i know of that will stop the water from transpiring through the concrete. unless you own the house i wouldnt mess with it.

thanks

i have been doing lots of reading mostly research papers and test done. when you get ready drop me a pm. i sent a friend some info i'll see if i can find a copy of it on the puter. we live in a snow area and it dont help when ya loose 20-40% of your heat through the poured basement walls. the % is close it's been a while sense i last was reading on the subject it might be 20-30% but even at 20% lose over a cold winter ads up.

so i left my little temp meter in my box and it turns out when the lights are off, the temp drops to 66 degrees... i think that is too low, am i right?

i think 66* is ok, thats what im running at night my self it's helped the purple show up on a few plants sooner. but if your not relaxed with the temps use a heat pad like MAJ stated or what ballastman said use upside down pots or both. but i wouldnt set the plants right on the mat unless its has some way of temp adjustment and keep an eye on the soil it will dry faster then normal.

zigg - i do not think im going to use the heating pad because like u stated it will dry out the soil faster... however i am going to get a pad for the seedlings, i was looking around and the heat makes the seedlings grow faster... i did elevate the box... and i need to find some damn perlite my local stores right now only have Miracle Grow perlite with ferts in it...

Ferted perlite? That damn miracle grow company even poisons their perlite?Thats sad.I dont know what you could use in place of perlite except maybe washed gravel or pebbles.I use fox farm perlite, the best out there and they know it just raied their prices to 33.50 a bag!Its worth it though once you use it you'll never want anything else. Some of the perlite is so fine you dont know whether to snort it or put it on your plants.
