I'm pretty sure you can also use Jack's Classic which cheap and might be available at some (non-alternative) garden centers. Please correct me if I'm wrong Bong or jm.
As for hydro versus soil hydro. Soil is not clean by definition, but it is probably easier, more robust, and requires less equipment (hydro specific nutrients, meters, pH pen, pumps, res chillers, ect).
