we had a cpl. good friends for a while that were into that...they lived mostly in colorado, and had a sweet camper van and a kitchen.

lost touch over the years, but when these friends came thru colorado it was fun hangin out w/ them...looooootsa good weed, and no stress.

x-gf's mom went to gatherings too.

so are they still doing they thing?...or did greedy assholes ruin it like often is the case?

was just thinkin about my dawg "forest" from bailey/conifer today..hope all is well.

It must have been '90 or '91 when they had a 'Gathering' in the Chippewa National Forest where I lived @ the time (I owned two acres in the CNF then) and they numbered in the thousands. They depend on some of the members & the curiosity seekers coming by to donate ca$h to the cause, I recall someone telling me they had a 'blanket toss' set up so that people motoring by could toss pocket change into (or nearly into) the blanket, this was supposedly done for local purchases as they arrive mostly being able to sustain themselves. Folks around here are pretty laid back and so aside from a few comments on unkempt looking family members there were no valid complaints & certainly no unlawful incidents reported. They always leave the forest gathering places in better shape than when they arrived there & so our forestry dept let them be, state patrol was called in to help handle traffic as all the highways here are just two lane blacktop with marginal shoulders.......

I was out of town at the time & so I relied upon dependable local friends to fill me in.

I'll bet there's a potential for that w/the fringe members or tag alongs that are opportunity seekers looking for a free ride & buzz. We might have been lucky but the chippewa forest they chose was fairly remote too. Maybe some things weren't reported?

well we were in nederland at the time...the went into our tiny grocery, and washed their dirty hands under the veggie/fruit misters in the store.

...then when the store tossed the veggies/fruit after catching them...they friends were waiting out back to get them.

...pretty sorry

Yea good memories... It wasn't all good and definitely attracted some bad people, but if you focused on what the Rainbow Family was trying to accomplish while soaking up the Abundant Kindness, it was hard not to come away Feeling Positive :rasta:

My experience started in Reno, i boarded a Greyhound bus heading East and sat next to a cool guy from Humboldt...

I never heard of Humboldt or the Rainbow Family, he knew he was with an ignorant greenhorn but was cool just the same. He was happy to share stories of past Gatherings and full of enthusiasm about this years event.

In 92 it was the 20th annual Gathering held in a Colorado national forest near Aspen. All the stories told on the bus would tempt any heathen, even a greenhorn. I was headin Eastbound, without an itinerary so it wasn't even a question, i was in...

By the time we got off the bus, we were joined by an older woman who had been to 16 of the 20 Gatherings, she reminded me of Janis Joplin complete with pink sunglasses, and a young Canadian from Alberta who had been driftin around with a tent and sleeping bag for 2 years.

We grabbed a meal in a cafe where we met a local guy who offered to drive us. Once in the car The Humboldt Dude broke out a big sac with about a 1/2 lb of nice Humboldt sugar leaf :yoinks: the driver freaked a lil but carried on he didn't smoke nor was he goin to the Gathering he was just bein friendly.

The Canadian Dude offered doses and before my mind processed the question the other 2 accepeted, it would have been rude not to, so here we go:woohoo:

Not long after the doses started to take effect the Humboldt Dude broke out a bag of Shrooms almost as big as his bag of weed:yoinks: the driver was really gettin nervous but the Humboldt Dude said he would say he was alone hitchin and only he knew bout the drugs.

We arrived safely and very High, I stayed 2 weeks with the Rainbow Family, it most definitely had a Huge and Positive impact on my life...

I always wondered if the Humboldt Dude was part of this family...

I hope our paths cross again, Many Thanks & Respect to the Humboldt Dude...

Still Heading East...

They come to NY every year, well, they did last I knew. Hector national forest alongside seneca lake. The locals call them woodchucks. Because, they come out of hibernation (nowhere) every summer. I've gone up a few times over the years for a night or two. Mostly went up for a day to score some of whatever we came across. This was back in mid 90's.
You could always tell when it was time. I lived in a town 20 miles away and all of a sudden in the summer you'd start seeing tiedyed shirts hitchhiking. The local police(staties, sheriffs and park rangers made it their mission to get them out of their. I remember something about them trying to not let them in for not having permits or some lame shit like that.

I have seen some similar things the the rainbows ie..washing their hands over the veggies. In durango a couple tried to leave their two year old with us while they drove up to bc to get ganja. we knew they had no intention of coming back tho...
other than that they were nice folks. great weed too!

I remember back in the 80's when the locations were passed word of mouth between the hippy circles we found out where they were after spending a few weeks touring with the Dead.
