Philosophy.

any philosophy majors have any info for me? i would imagine that there is mountains of reading and interpreting to be done.

on a side note, if your interested in philosophy, feel free to post anything having to do with it :lurk:

Philosophy is interesting reading, however I never quite understood how one made a living off of it...other than teaching. If you haven't yet check out Thomas Hobbes (you'll be reading a lot of him) and John Dewey, they don't have much in common but they're a couple of my favorites.

Intellectually, religious emotions are not creative but conservative. They attach themselves readily to the current view of the world and consecrate it.-John Dewey

Semiotics is cool..i was going to choose semiotics. But just like philosophy there is not much you can do with it. I mean if you seriously want to learn philosophy you can pretty much do it at home. Thats why i chose Horticulture.. :)

Philosophy won't get you a job easily. If you take this major, you should also go to graduate school in maybe law.

I loved studying philosophy. I took what I learned into accountancy, you'd be suprised how often being able to reduce an arguement to its principles can help you out in life.

Well, at least when you graduate and don't have a job, you'll be able to philosophize about stuff in your free time.

Pretty much. That and you can ponder the meaning of debt, when you are sitting there with no job and 60K in student loans. College today is a joke, most employers dont give a piss about your degree. My cousins both have masters degree's and one is in scotland now working on a farm and the other works for Verizon as a temp making dick. I have a diploma and a few credits and make over 6 figures a year. I for one am glad i didnt waste 4 years of my life in a dorm eating ramen noodles.

Without being too specififc could you please state what profession you're in. I know if I go into clinical psychology Im gonna be looking at 6 figures a year. I'd go for psychiatry but they need a lot more college than a clinical psych. They do make more in most cases usually over 100,000. I can be looking at anywhere from 80,000 to 130,000 a year. I know a pshchiatrist though that makes 250,000 a year. But he was like 35 by the time he finished college.

real estate, and finance. and you dont need a degree. What good is 100k when you owe 60k in loans .

yeah true but Im interested in psychology anyways. I figure if I can get 100k doing something I enjoy then that's good for me. And 100k is more than a lot of people make so I cant complain. Im sure you enjoy what you do too so thats good. Also the way Im going to do it I wont have that much in loans to pay off. At 100k a year they shouldnt be a problem.

Along with your regular subject, you study something related. You spend an extra amount of time on this minor subject to be more informed than normal students. For example, early childhood education majors may take psychology as a minor.

so are minor subjects optional or a core part of study? is it like you spend 30 hours a week on a major then 10 on the minor or 40 on the major and extra on the minor in your own time or how does it work? I take it its not like a split degree. Here you have the option of studying a single subject, which you will then be qualified in, or splitting your degree, and studying 2 or 3 subjects, but at the end of it you arent qualified in any of them. For example if you study psychology at degree level, you come out a pschologist, but if you split it with something else, you don't. But you dont go into things in as much depth, making the degree qualification easier to aquire but less usefull. Just wondering if this major minor thing works like that.

No mate, the way it works is you do all the courses you need for your major, but you also do enough courses to minor in something. You could come out a psychologist with a minor in economics if you wanted to. The minor doesn't really mean all that much.

The minor can be a semester or a whole year's worth of coursework more than your major though, in a lot of cases. :joint:
