So Everyone Uses Cal Mag Plus?

I've heard a lot of chatter on grow sites about Cal Mag Plus, a liquid additive from Botanicare. From what I've been told, Mary Jane loves Calcium and Magnesium. Eveyone seems to use this. Why? I wouldn't use it unless my plants showed a deficiency. Cal Mag Plus is expensive at around $15/quart.

Cal Mag is usually a preventative measure, especially when you're in areas with hard or soft water. A quart, by the way, should last at least 5 or 6 grows if not more, seeing how you only use a tsp per gallon of water...

I only have 1 strain out of 8 that I use the cal mag the rest are fine without so I wouldn't bother unless like you said see a deficiency

But if you know your water then you'll know if you'll probably need it or not. If you're growing new strains then it's a bit of a different ballgame but just pay afuckingttention and that's all you'll need.

Calmag plus is for soil growers that use R/O or dehumidifier water on their plants,it shouldn't be used with hard water lest you want to OD on calcium which locks out your mag and K

Cal mag + is developed to replenish what is stripped from reverse osmosis filtering. there are additional micro and macro elements as well, because when you strip the water of everything, it is important to replenish what is beneficial in water. I have seen CAL mg. drinking water, as it is just important to humans as it is to plants.

whats in your water??

Sure is. Most growers add pulverized dolomite lime to their soil mix. 3$ for a 50 pound bag. Cheap. This gives the plants at least cal mag for a month. After that, you might reapply more based on soil ph or begin adding some to your water...this is when cal mag plus might be used.

You don't wait till you see a deficiency to feed the plants nutrients the plants need. Your plant can suffer without really showing definate symptoms. Also once magnesium deficiency starts its hard to reverse.

Here are cheap ways to add more cal mag...

Test ph and see if you need to raise ph. You would then add powdered/pulverized dolomite lime to the surface to give you calcium and magnesium.

If ph is ok, you can add cal mag to your fert water. 1/4 teaspoon calcium nitrate or powdered gypsum and 1/4 teaspoon epsom salts per gallon of water. Calcium chloride could be used for calcium but this requires net weight of the bottle and % ca. Calclium chloride might be sold under names like tomato blossom end rot stopper. Easily disolvable gypsum you can get at the brew your own beer stores. Epsom salt and gypsum give you valuable sulfur.

Ph is important. At least get ph test strips from a brew your own beer wine store or the aquariuim section at a petstore. Adjust fert water ph before giving to the plants. You can also test soil ph.

How to test soil ph: After watering and ferting well, wait 30 minutes. Then apply some distilled water to the pot surface. Get 1 or 2 ounces of runoff and catch on a saucer. Test this ph. If you can tilt the pot after watering/ferting and waiting 30 minutes, you can test that instead.

Another more accurate way to test ph is scrape soil mix off the rootball. take 1/4 cup soil mix and mix with 1/4 cup distilled water. Stir. Wait 30 minutes. Test ph.

Just curious, I don't use cal mag on MJ. My water is good & hard.
I do use Epsom salts on my tomatoes for extra calcium & mag.
Putting my little old thinking cap on.
Maybe cal mag is nothing but pre diluted Epsom salts?

nah..

nah..

theres other trace minerals in Cal mag, but to tell you the truth, I add a pinch of epsom salts in conjustion to using Cal mag. just to be on the safe side! :joint:

Yeah, if you are using charcoal-filtered water or R/O water, i like to add cal-mag plus and a small amount of tap water just for buffering purposes.....

Let me add that i wasn't happy with my bottle of cal-mag plus.....it just didn't seem to make the plants perk up like i had seen happen to other grows following an applilcation of cal-mag......

There is a bottled water out there called "Sanfaustino" which is basically "organic" cal-mag.....it is carbonated water that is 8 percent Ca and 8 percent Mg at a pH of 5.9...
I have found that this is a great plant tonic when you add it to the roots, and also
makes a nice foliar feeding product......i like to treat my plants to it every now and then......

I'm going to try another Cal-Mag product like "Magi-Cal" from BC Technaflora....I like
the fact that this product has additional Iron, and comes without any Nitrogen
whatsoever.....(Cal-Mag Plus has a small amount of N, maybe 2%)....

Happy growing!!! :woohoo:

Magi-Cal by Technaflora also has 2% N. It probably comes from calcium nitrate.

Magical
