SNOT ON MY ROOTS - PLEASE HELP

Hi All,

I am in the process of setting up my first DWC when I came across this thread. Just the other night I cut holes for net pots in two rubbermaid tubs - clear ones. I am immediately scrapping those in favor of some colored ones that are light proof. I had not heard that light adversely affects roots in DWCs, but I wanted to say thanks to all who responded to this plea for help. I'm sure this just saved me from an impending crisis!

Thanks again,
CaptainKirk

kirk...i have been growing with clear 1 gallon containers from walmart with no troubles for 5 years...that being said algae will not flourish with the absence of light..i have been growing this strain, dreamgoddess for 2...no problems until recently..i have since light proofed everything with black paint my next step id to go back and paint everything black to white to keep it cooler and reflect light

i may be wrong, but this is the first time i used tap water...although the ph was adjusted could that had anything to do with it?

YES.

Some muni water districts add Phosphate (PO4) to help "lube" the line particularly in areas affected by hard heavy mineralized water. Micro algae like slime alages can grow in relatively low light conditions if water parameters are met, like high phosphates (mico algae fertilizer).

I run DWC about 50% of my runs and must say that use of bio friendly substrates like lava tend to produce the right kind of bacters that not only reduce PO4 naturally w/o chemicals, they also off gas stuff that aids in your plants metabolism.

Once the algae starts the bloom-die cycle, additional organic waste load build creating unstable water w low DO and ph probs.

you start throwing chemicals in to correct this shit (as a management practice and not corrective), your water dynamics change across the board and it is likely you will be chasing your tail adjusting one parameter only to throw another one off.

BTW i find the grey colored plastic paint (rustoleum) reflects 100% of the light w/o the same heat build-up from black. jmtc

I see a window and I want to paint it black.......

or

In a dark room with white curtains....

peace

richyrich....boy what a thread with your 95 posts were great but i read the whole thing ...here is the update. i was switching the way i grow. before used 1 gallon dwc with air stone. worked well for 5 years. as said before my last three grows had that leave drooping like rr14 did and lost everything but 1 plant grown to harvest. suspected heat and clear containers as culprit, also told my problem was water level too high in the 1 gal dwc. had clones and went to the kitty litter sog type growing.6 plants in 4 gallons...got the snot and lost all plants but one...have a dreangoddess mother plant took a bunch a clones and all died..still had the mother plant in 1 gallon dwc but the roots had not grown into the h20 like you would expect. pulled plant out of the hydroton rocks and roots were browinish...no slime..earthy smell. sprayed with 3% h202 lots of bubbling. like the roots were stunted. plant not doing good. bout ready to order physan. how much physan would you put in 1 gallon...1ml??? let it soak with or with out bubbler? my roots are brown but no slime...lastly i am to the 6 week of flowering gigantic DG takes up most of my cabinet. roots look pristine. why was this plant not harmed??? i use no additives and Lucas formula. have no meters and every once in a while check ph with a eye dropper kit..what i am saying is i usually let the plant do its thing with out worrying too much until now...from that post i guess i need to order the physan but weren't the direction 5 ml to 20 gallons. read alot about keeping plants in for 12 hours...i am thinking more of 20 mins. Please advise.......
BTW has some old EA and EN around...tried that for kicks and giggles...beneficial bacteria and I am getting new root growth off the 1 surviving once snot ridding plant...coincidence????also flushed and changed water frequently and have not gotten same results with mother plant
