Smoking weed may be dangerous for your heart, study finds

With medical marijuana legal in 33 states, it’s now widely viewed as a drug with the potential to treat various health conditions, from epilepsy to chronic pain. But a new study in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology suggests that those with heart conditions should use it with caution.
Conducted by doctors at the American College of Cardiology (ACC), a D.C.-based medical research association, the systematic review explored 36 case studies on cardiovascular health and found that many of the drugs used to treat heart conditions have the potential to interact with marijuana. While the interaction may vary based on the drug, the root issue lies in the fact that both substances are often processed in the liver, which can interfere with how the body absorbs the medication.
Among the specific drugs listed are statins (atorvastatin, lovastatin and simvastatin), Warfarin, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs including ibuprofen and naproxen. On top of interactions with drugs, the review found that smoking marijuana can produce “cardiotoxic chemicals” — similar to those produced from smoking cigarettes — landing it in the top three triggers for heart attack (behind cocaine and eating a heavy meal).
Muthiah Vaduganathan, MD, a cardiologist at Brigham and Women's Hospital's Heart and Vascular Center in Boston as well as the study’s lead author, says the review builds on earlier research showing a link between cannabis use and heart issues. “Our review suggests that smoking marijuana carries many of the same cardiovascular health hazards as smoking tobacco,” Vaduganathan said in a statement. “While the level of evidence is modest, there's enough data for us to advise caution in using marijuana for our highest-risk patients, including those who present with a heart attack or new arrhythmia, or who have been hospitalized with heart failure."
While smoking tobacco is generally viewed as more dangerous to heart health, Vaduganathan explains that inhaling marijuana may pose even more danger. “Smoking marijuana involves large puffs with longer breath holds,” he tells Yahoo Lifestyle. “As such, the delivery of chemical toxins and tar is deposited to a similar or greater degree with smoking marijuana.” But before vaping advocates suggest that it is a safer option, Vaduganathan says that method of delivery poses its own risks.
“Vaping enhances the drug delivery of marijuana even beyond that of smoking,” Vaduganathan tells Yahoo Lifestyle. “Indeed, when the combustion products of both tobacco and marijuana (when smoked) are compared, both contain a similar array of toxins and substances. This information raises concerns that marijuana, when smoked or vaped, may pose similar cardiotoxic risks as tobacco smoking.”
Whether vaping, smoking or consuming marijuana, he hopes that those who read the study will walk away with the knowledge that the drug is not harmless. “Patients are increasingly inquiring about the relative safety of marijuana use; as a cardiovascular community, we need to be equipped with evidence-based responses,” he says. “As such, until further data are available, we advise caution regarding the use of marijuana in our highest risk patients with established cardiovascular disease.”

Oh my goodness that is frightening. I had open heart surgery, mammary to lad ( duh widow maker thing ) almost 15 years ago now. I also have done intensive edta INTRAVENOUS chelation therapy, was stuck more than 100 times and when my heart and vascular had to be cleared for surgery a few months ago, my heart was ALL CLEAR ( according to the cardiologist who did the heart cath et'al )....the only issues were in my lower legs but it's also been that way for 20 years.

I guess that theory as far as I'm concerned is what do they call it....Bullshit?

A heavy meal can trigger a heart attack?!?!
I best reign myself in a bit... I’m kind of a one big meal a day person. Whoops.
On a side note, I have had to have a few heart checks myself in the past few months due to gastric problems and both times the guy has done a double-take due to how good the results are- last time he re did the tests, and asked me my secret
I told him it was 30 ish years of smoking weed

" the review found that smoking marijuana can produce “cardiotoxic chemicals” — similar to those produced from smoking cigarettes "

Well it costs 35$ to read this actual 'study' so it is unknown what cardiotoxic chemicals they refer to and whether other forms of ingestion can mitigate the risk, if it truly exists.
Beyond that, it just about interference with certain meds.. that doesn't makes a substance inherently 'dangerous for the heart'

Fuckin fear-mongering idiot. Can't even make a point without chasing the tail.

Was that vitamin C chelation? Did you have a before (clogged) report to compare the after (clear) condition to?

No, EDTA Chelation done via needle in zee arm and sit for 2-3 hours drip drip drip

Well yes, all my heart arteries, everything showed massive blockages the worst were the mammary/lad https://myheart.net/articles/heart-bypass-surgery-explained-in-incredible-pictures/ which one of them was 100% blocked, another the blockage was in the high end. My doc then advised I do thru with the bypass as it's 100% blocked and therefore have to bring in the heavy artillery. I did so and as those images of the chest being cut etc, that was me too on the table as this was done the old fashioned way, great heart surgeon by the way from new yawk......said I had nothing to lose with the chelation therapy and the scariest blockages of all were the carotids....( my family and ancestors all had severe atherosclerosis, heart and vascular discease, lost both my parents this way etc ) and so I did. Ultimately I did so over 100 times.

I had heart caths and other tests along the way with the most recent being a few months ago as I had to get clearance for surgery and I did so, even after all these years without any b/s about my heart and vascular and this was too me amazing news and music to my ears as you can imagine.

Some call it a scam. I have intellectually jousted with that guy who seems to have an ax to grind and I think he has an ax to grind ie is a

Of course along the way I met many others who have similar experiences and all of us who have elected to give this a shot have the opportunity to speak with others in similar situations as generally speaking you would sit in a large room with I've seen as few as 8 chairs and as many as 25 or so as in Asheville NC but it's not available everywhere....Asheville was pretty amazing .

Now not totally clear, I don't think anybody is but in my case none of my blockages register high enough to be considered for any kind of surgery or even "pharmaceutical enhancements" that they all seem to be peddling. My own cardiologist was surprised at my on going test results but for fear of insurance reprisals down the road so I never tell what I'm doing or have done in this regard, I just nod my head and grunt like I'm even older than I am:tiphat:

It's about moderation in all things. We need water to live, but drinking too much water will kill you.

Tylenol alleviates pain and lowers fever. Too much will kill you.

Wine in small amounts is shown to be beneficial, too much will kill you. Slowly or quickly depending on the volume you intake.

Weed can be beneficial for many things. But inhaling smoke is inherently bad for you.

I know for a fact that toking up raises my BP 5-10 points immediately after smoking. Racy Sativa's more so than stoney Indica's.

Smoking may increase your chance of a heart attack. So does eating a rare steak. So does being 30 lbs overweight. So does a lack of exercise.

Genetics has a lot to do with it. I knew a guy that lived to be 90. Smoked 2 packs of Camels a day, ate a southern diet. I've seen people that ate right, didn't smoke and exercised daily die at 50 of a heart attack.

You're gonna die regardless. Smoke a joint, drink a beer. Might as well enjoy yourself until your number comes up.

Why? Where are all the reported cases of heart problems due to marijuana abuse? Huh? Are you a medical professional or just shooting from the hip?

old news wrapped in yesterdays newspaper, lol. been acknowledged for years that there is a temporary window after getting high that your heart rate increases to a point that "could? produce cardiac problems. i think that if burning one triggers your heart attack, you probably had some pre-existing conditions upping your odds.

yes, dont read it. its written for pot nazzis, so they can justify their hate for cannabis.. its like when volkisher beobachter wrote how jews are evil, so antisemitism of readers could be justified.. hate is not love and it cant be justified.. nazzis also had their "scientific" studies for it :D

Yeah,

It can cause sudden problems with Blood Pressure (usually a decrease) for a short period of time right after smoking.

If you have a Heart Condition this could cause additional troubles.

I noticed that certain Strains cause the lowered Blood Pressure more than others and it goes “away” or back to “normal” pretty quickly.

I have smoked strong cannabis my entire adult life, had an angeogram a couple years ago and was clear no stints, good heart function so I am going to continue to use cannabis without thinking much about this...
