I bet the smart pots would be jus killer ina drip ta waste system too. Btw that's a fantastic idea useing them for a strawberry planter, I'll be checkin that out! It's too bad they coudn't throw in alil titanium oxide when they make these tho. I know they say they stay cool(er) in the sun, but somthin white is bound ta stay cooler than somethin black in the sun. It would make a smart pot smarter. lol Prolly wouldn't look too purdy once it got dirty tho I spose. ha! later, BC

IF anyone does buy these, what is the return address on the box and does the box indicate the contents? I hate retailers that advertise on the outside of the box.

I'm transplanting 1 out of 4 A5 x Thai into this pot within the next 3 weeks.
The remaining three will go into similar pots without holes from the lowest level of 4 holes per side and up.

They're growing from seed so the "test" is not super tight :D

The OT Haze x SWT# is doing mighty fine in the DIY ~4 liter cloth pot.

62 days from seed, 12/12 from seed, 2x55W fluoro tubes
Thats what I'm talking about! Drillin holes, makin do with what I got! Nice JRW - Emily's garden pots are what I keep my moms in, and with only 3/4 gal medium, they can get 5-6ft tall, healthy green!

Emily's Garden Pot:

I'm thinking I could drill holes in the corners of my MaxiPots like those.

RE: SmartPots

If you are involved in the trading of plants with others and you happen to find powdery mildew on a new plant, then you need to make sure that you treat the exterior of the grow bag as well as the plant. The cloth provides a perfect medium for powdery mildew.

A MMJ grower up in Portland posted a grow diary on one of the private Oregon MMJ Boards and he is using the SmartPots with rice hulls in a hydroponic system.

The plants looked pretty healthy. Then again I know nothing about growing using hydroponics.

Thanks for the heads up on the guy in Oregon CC. I know when I get the chance I'm gonna do some tinkering with several different methods. If ya stop learning, ya stop growing... besides it's fun. Take care, BC

Well I made good on my post and threw this together yesterday.

I took my 20 minutes to drill the holes with a hole saw, fit the screen and clean up, I could make them in 10 minutes if I was making a few at once.

I figure material at like 5$, for a closet grower with max 4 x 5gallon plants flowering at once it is worthwile to make them..provided they work.

This pot will be used in my upcoming op, I'll have more feedback once I see what the roots do when they meet the mosquito mesh.

Peace

Oh yes, Suby!

Maybe even too ventilated, but time will tell.

The surface of soil to air contact is vastly bigger than with Airpots.

That actually looks pretty good mate.

yeah I was pleasantly surprised myself lol.

JRW if we figure that a cloth pot is basically a big sponge the it will have as much if not more air to earth contact, if anything I see it as a bonus really.

It could on the other hand fail miserably, if it does I will try rooting mat for the inside instead, I need a solid pot, I hate flimsy pots which is why I loather grow bags.

I have tried smart pots and say they seemed to work fine for me. Just one more thing to help i guess.

The grow I'm doing right now is a recirc drip, 100% fine coco, in 4" square netpots with panty-hose wrapped around so the coco doesn't all fall out. I was wondering if it'd have the same air pruning effects as some of these products. There's a few roots coming out of the bottom, but not a whole lot. They're definitely the healthiest looking plants I've grown, but that could be attributed to several new things this round. Either way, I'm planning on continuing with the square net pots, I'm very pleased. If I can get my hands on those air pots I'd love to give them a shot in my drip system.

No good pics right now, but when the lights come on I'll try to get some.

Just drill holes in your pots it won't take much time. Alternatively, use sldering iron. Simple as that.

Burning plastic is fine, if you like carcinogens. I'd say the drill would be much more secure health wise..

ive tried this an easy way, and it seems to be working well. all i did was stab the pot i had with knife to make slits all over the side of the pot bout 60 or so slits in a 1 gallon pot. 3 weeks later i pull the plants out of the pots and the one with slits i can tell has more root mass inside the soil than on the outside compared to the other, roots are healthier, and used water more efficiently. the roots seemed to have stopped when they got to the edge of the pot.

I second that. That's why I have tried drilling holes in a conventional pot instead. These cloth pots don't work for me either... :D
