Smart Pots

Not true at all. Molds are quite easy and inexpensive. I used to fabricate carbon fiber and fiberglass for my RC planes. Not a problem.

Because making a mold would cost you much more on materials then just buy the real thing.

Suby,

Your bucket idea for the homemade air pruning pots... what about doing the same thing but with milk crates? Line a milk crate with the same screen material and you have a really strong, 5-6 gallon container that is also square so as to maximize space in an indoor garden.

Just thinking out loud.

Dig

It would work for sure.
I have a smaller version of my original idea but I ran out of mosquito meshing so I've used burlap, hell the wrap tree roots in those so why not?

Please do it's all good. Post expense list. I bet it will cost not less then $6 for a 1g pot just on materials. About a litre of material on one pot.

Burlap grow bags seem like a decent answer to this, though even burlap bags can be a little spendy.

But you're talking about using the burlap in place of screen material... my only concern would be that I use burlap in my outdoor grows. Initially as shading after initial transplant, and then usually the burlaps ends up serving as mulch to retain moisture. And after a single season, the burlap has big holes in it from the microbes going to town on the fibers. They love to munch burlaps fibers. Not sure how long the burlap would last as a substitute for screening/netting.

Yeah burlap is cheap and so far so good, it was writen "good for covering tree rootballs" so why not eh?

I watered yesterday and took some pics so they look a little droopy. The plant in the regular pot is about 3/4 taller than the one in the airpot. I did put the smaller of the clones in the airpot from the beginning so I don't know how much difference that makes.

Lt. Dan.......As you say it`s an "airpot" from superoots and not a smartpot from "High Caliper growing systems".......2 totally different animals......There`s really no comparison....One`s plastic and the other one`s fabric.......Smartpots truly "air prune " roots and Superoot plastic surrounds only divert roots to holes outside the area that the roots hit first in each pyramid cone area of the unit and only the strongest fastest set of root hairs that hit the hole is "air-pruned"......Granted.....The airpots are reuseable indefinitely cuz they`re plastic but the smartpots work without root diversion accepting all root growth for air pruning as it hits the fabric to receive roots thru it rather than merely moving roots to the sides of the plastic cones formed in the airpots to compete for the holes left for anchoring and root dehydration during the air pruning process .......I`ve received excellent use of the smartpots in my first run so it`ll be hard to persuade me into trying plastic surrounds with an open bottom just because it might have a longer shelf life..............DHF........ :joint: .........

Make sure ya take good measurements so that you can accurately judge growth! I'm really curious as to how this pans out!

Question regarding the Smart Pots:

If they are air pruning roots, why are all the pictures I find showing roots coming out the bottom or near the bottom of the bag?

Pimpjuice.........Make sure you call the toll-free # cuz the website prices are out the ass............They`re waaaaay cheaper on the phone..........I used the 5 gals. and they`re not as big as a 3 gal. bucket but only 2 bucks per 100 instead of $6 per online.......They`re horticulturally sized....That might be something you wanna look at for plant numbers in a certain amount of sq. ftg......bdlt.......The pics you speak of must be from flood and drain grows where the bottoms stayed wet enough due to the fill line of the ebb and flow tables they`re sitting in to not be "air pruned" in between feed cycles..........My sp`s sat on an angle while being top fed and there were roots everywhere till they dried out and were just attached to the interior of the fabric but you could still see roots at the bottom corners sitting on the racks kinda like what you saw........The air root pruning process dehydrates the outer lateral roots, stops the roots endless spinning while diverting energy from the plants growth and or flowering process.......At least that`s what it did for me.........They were invented for growing trees for resale and within the first few yrs. of implementing the new technology, the results stood for themselves........The trees matured at a much faster rate than growing in large plastic containers while filling out more and being much more desirable in the wholesale market cuz they could sell them faster than ever before due to the accelerated growth.........There`s several companies that market similar concepts like Superoots and I`m not saying the sp`s are better for trees......But...They look to be the SHIT for growin my buds though .......It could be the vertical racks with the plants positioned on the walls or the combination of all the above......Time will tell.........Ya`ll take care..........DHF............ :joint: ......

How about a laundry basket? Of course without the dirty underwear in it.. Load it up with some nice chunky soil and see what happens.

OR, How about one of those Steel Mesh Office Trashcans??? Deskside about 3 or 4 gallon black... Punch a couple of holes in the bottom?

A laundry basket and an office trash can are more expensive. Why not just buy the pots?
