ShroomDr's Nutrient Formula Elemental NPK parts-per-million List!

ShroomDr

CartoonHead
Veteran
This thread lists the NPK of a few common products. It is also sorted by manufacturer and by type of product: main nutrients, PK boosters, cal-mags, vitamin & kelp products, and carb products.

Nutrient lines can be hard to compare. Most liquid nutrient manufactures break up the essential elements into 2 parts (or more). Juggling 4 bottles, looking for up to 17 elements, trying to factor application rates, all can be difficult (especially when medicated in a store). Ive posted some of this before and I encourage others to help add to this list.

Lets start with two related tangents. Two FACTS that a lot of new growers fail to comprehend.

[Fact1]
'PPM meters' do not measure parts-per-million. One more time, 'PPM meters' will not measure parts-per-million. 'PPM meters' actually measure electrical conductivity (EC) (EC measured in μS/cm or mS/cm) Then they take this μS/cm and convert it to a unit they have labeled 'ppm'. Different manufactures use different 'ppm' conversions, hence the different conversion factors. This is totally superfluous, and adds to consumer confusion.
So I urge all users to use EC (μS/cm or mS/cm) instead of uselessly posting their 'ppm' without knowing their scale (If you are going through the trouble of posting your conversion, why not convert it for your audience?).
Some products do not register on an EC meter and some register high vs the fertilizer present (for example, Liquid Karma raises the EC a lot, compared to the actual amount of fertilizer in contains. Most of this reading is from the 'Non-Plant Food Ingredients' Humic Acid, Aloe Vera, etc). The 'ppm' meter is useful for measuring the daily change of the EC (up or down), but will not give you the actual parts-per-million.
[/Fact1]

[Fact2]

A (20-20-20) fertilizer is not equal parts N:p:K.
P and K are calculated as P2O5 and K2O.
The label factors in the atomic weight of oxygen

P is 43.6% of what is labeled.

P=31 O=16.

P2O5 = (2 x 31) + (5 x 16) = 142.
P = (2 x 31)=62.
62/142 = 43.6% P in P2O5.

K is 83% of what is labeled.

K=39 O=16.

K2O = (2 x 39) + (16) = 94.
K = (2 x 39)=78.
78/94 = 83% K in K2O.
[/Fact2]

We need a starting off point.
The most referenced is: Mel Franks/pH/Lucas formula.
N100 P100 K200 Mg60

(This type of listing is the actual elemental parts-per-million; the reading you are searching for (and not getting) with your 'ppm meter'). These numbers have all came from the Canna Stats nutrient profile calculator. The math could be done by hand, but that page makes everything a lot easier.

Here is the list, keep in mind that labels are a guaranteed minimum analysis, CNS17 for example lists only a handful of micros, CNS stands for Complete Nutrient Solution and the 17 is referencing the 17 elements they consider essential. I am sure there is more than the minimum that Botanicare chose to list (someone posted Botanicare considers this a trade secret).

[Primer]
(NH4) is ammonium nitrogen, (N03) is water soluble nitrogen, water soluble means immediately available to the plant.
Anything marked 'NOT LISTED' means the element is listed in the ingredients but not the guaranteed minimum analysis.
Magnesium Sulfate = epsom salt (MgSO4·7H2O).
[/Primer]

I would like to formally apologize for the half ass measurement of mL/Gal.

Most products are listed at 10mL, 5mL, or 2.5mL per Gal application rate (for easy comparison, and math; keep in mind this may not be the labels recommended application rate).

55 Products, I'll keep updating!
===== =====
Note: With the '2 part' formulas listed, All the Ca and Fe come exclusively from the micro/boost bottle (Most of the N too [in the form of Calcium Nitrate]).
All these 'Carb/Sugar' products contain Magnesium Sulfate aka epsom salt.
I would like to discuss these and other occurrences.
===== =====
PLEASE HELP ADD TO THE LIST. I do not have access to H&G, and I would love to see other PK boosters, etc. Again all the info was put into the CannaStats Nutrient Profile Calculator.:tiphat:

Here are a few common formulas people seem to use

There are at least two things people call 'Lucas'. Some call it 'Lucas Ratio', referring specifically to his 1:2 mix of GH FloraMicro:GH FloraBloom (8ml:16mL). Some refer to 'Lucas' as the the actual elemental NPK breakdown of 100N 100P 200P (Of which, this mix comes pretty close) (I believe this target predates Lucas by decades;TY Mel Franks).

GH Flora Micro @8mL/Gal = 130N 0P 22K 130Ca 2.6Fe +
GH Flora Bloom @16mL/Gal = 0N 106P 161K 73Mg

8+16 = 130N 106P 183K 73Mg 130Ca 2.6Fe

Another mix still using the Flora Series is the H3ad/Rez mix. They both use coco as a substrate, and their mix is a 2:3 ratio of GHFM:GHFB (6ml:9mL)

(They also add a PK booster 2-3X during flower).

GH Flora Micro @6mL/Gal = 97N 0P 16K 97Ca 1.9Fe +
GH Flora Bloom @9mL/Gal = 0N 60P 91K 41Mg

6+9 = 97N 60P 107K 41Mg 97Ca 1.9Fe

NOTE: The biggest change is the drop in K (P Mg too). I assume this augmentation is because as coco breaks down it releases K.

Here is A similar NPK profile with a newer product called Cutting Edge Solution (CES)

CES Micro @ 5mL/Gal = 101N 0P 0K 84Ca 1.7Fe
CES Bloom @8mL/Gal = 0N 64P 101K 24Mg

5+8 = 101N 64P 101K 24Mg 84Ca 1.7Fe

(Again, this is also supplemented with a PK boost 2-3X during flower).

CES seems low on Mg, i believe they have two products called Amp (one is Ca, one is Mg). I believe the Ca says it will drop the pH, and to leave it there for a day or two. Clarification from actual users would be greatly appreciated.

:lurk:
nice work...
should be good discussion.
all these factor in nutrient uptake & use...

calcium antagonisms....
precipitation (iron, calcium, magnesium, etc)...
so-called '1-parts'...
so-called 'cal-mag's
ph...
water quality...
cation exchange/cation exchange capcity of specific medium...
media-type...
water input...
dehumidification (water out-put/vpd)...

calcium & ph being most influential, ivho...
:2cents:
link to thread for further methods of calculating ec, ppms, & preferably millimhos, whic calculate actual weight of elements in solution...
also, formulas for calculating npk/profiles by hand, other calculators, & how to calculate ppms of molasses & other common food-stuff amendments...

calculating npk/nutrient profile

hope this helps.

So a few topics i would like to open for discussion

1.) Why are all these nutrient companies adding epsom salt to Carb products?

Im pretty sure too much Mg will lock out Ca (the most important immobile) I thought it was equal parts Mg:Ca caused lockout (general recommendations are K:Ca:Mg 8:4:1 or 4:2:1). This makes me want to find Carb products without Magnesium Sulfate. Also, i have never heard of flushing with epsom salt, but plenty flush with carbs.

2.) Interesting that Technaflora Micro is identical to the Cal-Mags accept for having Potassium Nitrate (MagiCal adds Calcium Chloride, and another form of Iron).

3.) The different forms of Fe (DTPA, EDDHA, EDTA, did i miss one) and the other mircos.

4.) I wish i had more bloom boosters on the list, but do most have micros the way Awesome Blossoms does?

5. Again noting, with these three 'two parts', the micro/boost bottles contain all the Ca and Fe.

6. A proper N:Ca ratio?
GH seems to be 1:1, CES seems to be 1:0.84 Technaflora 1:1.07 (Technaflora P:K ratio is different than the first two).

There are plenty of occurrences/similarities/anomalies i would love to discuss about nutrient manufactures. Hell at some point ill add a price/Gal of nutrient solution (I think i had CNS @ $0.17/Gal).

D

DonkDBZ

House and Garden only put the NPK on there bottles no calcium or magnesium. The other thing I noticed is they really love Potassium Hydroxide. I had all of AN stuff in the cannastats calculator but they changed there lineup again.

I'm diggin' this thread Shroom Dr. Thanks for posting this and for your help in the past.
If I had anything to contribute, I would, still too new. But I'm hookin' up to learn from this one.

Thx!

Thanks for taking the time to compile all that info.
I've had this idea of water nutrient analysis. As we all know there are services out there that will test your water, all you gotta do is send them a smaple and pay the fee. So I was thinkng about mixing up my current nutrient formula and sending in a sample. I know the nutrient calculator is pretty good but why not see what the ppm's really are or to see how accurate the nutrient calculator is?

Good discussion, funnily enough I been playing about on the cannastats calc today and also just watched a pottv vid on Mel Frank, seems he was instrumental in more than just the profile you discuss herein. But I suppose that's another thread entirely :D

I am currently using a 1 part (Canna Terra Bloom), here are the stats~

@19ml/Gal = 125N 44P 167K 40Mg 0Ca 0.7Fe if the Mg figure to input to calc is MgO... If not then 25Mg

Seems P and Mg are bit low compared to Mel's recs... I think they leave out Ca as it's for hardwater? maybe not...

Carl Carlson

CNS17 for example lists almost no Mg or Ca, CNS stands for Complete Nutrient Solution.

http://www.americanagritech.com/fertilizers/cns17

click on the name of each product and that on the picture of the label.

for example, the Hydro Grow: 1.10% S, 2.8% Ca, .5% Mg

Hell at some point ill add a price/Gal of nutrient solution (I think i had CNS @ $0.17/Gal).

IMO, the CNS17 Hydro Grow with it's more than enough S and Ca and probably Mg is the most cost efficient one-part LIQUID nutrient product.

C

Scotts Peters Professional Hydro-Sol (5-11-26) ($40.03 - 25 lb. bag) + YaraLiva Calcium Nitrate (15.5-0-0 + 26.3% Ca) ($22.72 - 50 lb. bag) + Epsom salts (coupla bucks for a carton at CVS?)

Step 1: Dissolve 130 ounces or 8 pounds 2 ounces of Peters in 1000 gallons to obtain the following concentrations:

N (All Nitrate) - 50 ppm
P - 48 ppm
K - 216 ppm
Mg - 31 ppm
S - 125 ppm
Fe - 3 ppm
Manganese - .50 ppm
Zinc - .15 ppm
Copper - .15 ppm
Boron - .50 ppm
Molybdenum - .10 ppm

Step 2. Based on the results of a current water test, determine if additional Mg is required. An average of 50 ppm Mg in the final solution is desirable for most crops. If water test results indicate that additional Mg is required, dissolve Epsom salts. One ounce of Epsom salts dissolved in 100 gallons (10 oz./1,000 gallons) supplies 7.5 ppm Mg.

Step 3. After the Hydro-Sol and any Epsom salts needed have been dissolved in the tank, proceed as follows:
* Dissolve 86 ounces of calcium nitrate in the same 1000 gallons. Total nutrient concentration will then be: Nitrogen as N: 150 ppm N, Calcium as Ca 116 ppm Ca

Interesting! I will post some tomorrow, got many lines as samplepacks!

However there is something I'm bothering a lot. I have ATAMI products but none states what they contain. The only one it states something is the bloombastic.

I'm not keen on using unknow products and wondering if somebody can point me out to where I can find such informations. in particular B'Cuzz Coco/Coco Max/Hydro A+B, Atazyme, atami pk 13-14, Ataclean

Just added The rest of CNS17 line, and updated to the current PBP line. Some of the g/mL weights were off, i fixed them. All of the gal. size bottles of PBP and CNS17 list 4.360kg and 3.8L (=1.47g/mL) but the quart size list .93kg and 960mL (=.969g/mL) (The difference in g/mL can give up to a 25% swing on the nute calc.)

These numbers are pretty far apart (and inexcusable imho), I dont think the Gal size is more concentrated, given the fact that both have the same effect on EC (I tested Ripe). This was also a problem with silica blast years ago (even their universal label had discrepancies; Ive posted about this before).

Nice Link, that is a worthy project. I didnt dl the calc but in the notes it says:

"Added Ammonium Molybdates (ortomolybdate and heptamolybdate) to salts list"

Often referred to as simply ammonium molybdate, it can refer to
ammonium paramolybdate (NH4)6Mo7O24·4H2O
or
ammonium orthomolybdate, (NH4)2MoO4

Given the fact that the needed Mo ppm is below 0.1, the ammonium difference between the two formulas is (VERY) negligible. But I love the idea non the less.

edit: Interestingly, Cutting Edge Solution and Technaflora both list Sodium Molybdate, Bontanicare and GH list Ammonium Molybdate.

Any chance you could add Flora Grow to that list and possibly the ppm analysis for GHs recommended veg formula of 3/2/1 at say 15 ml per gallon...so 7.5 Grow, 5 Micro and 2.5 Bloom.

That formula works great for me at least in veg.

I dont have the bottle or else i would have.

I used Carls Link in post #11 to fill out the rest of the botanicare line, something similar (for any manufactures) would be great. A clear picture of the bottle, or picture of the guaranteed minimum analysis (with weight and vol listed), and ill add anything.

The example still works here too, the amount of Mo needed is so small that the Na wouldnt hurt anything. (Sodium Molybdate is often Na2MoO4·2H2O but the needed level of Mo is <0.1ppm).

I am interested in users opinions on why one maybe preferable to the other. Users opinions on why GH and CES put the majority of the micro nutes in the 'nitrogen bottle' and Technaflora put the micros in the 'PK bottle' and 'PK boost'?

All three keep the Ca and Fe away from the P (all say add the Ca and Fe [ie micro/boost] bottle first), but preference to where the micros are kept is very intriguing to me.

Is one place more stable than the other?
Do any other bloom boosters have micros like awesome blossoms?

I wish they had to list all the micros, but it is a minimum analysis (obliviously botanicare has micros, they just dont list them).

Does AN list any micros or do they stick only to the N-P-K?

Addendum: Another anecdote, CES two part doesnt list magnesium sulfate, they use magnesium phosphate and potassium sulfate (and a negligible amount of cobalt sulfate in the micro bottle). They also dont seem to use (Mono) potassium phosphate. Where are the CES users?

CES Mag-Amped appears to be nothing more than magnesium sulfate. This label is pretty blurry, but it comes across CES Master Brochure.pdf And im pretty sure it says CES Plant Amp is calcium carbonate.

GH Floragrow guaranteed analysis:

N...2.0%
P2O5...1.0%
K2O...6.0%
Mg...0.5%

1 Gallon net weight 4.21Kg or 9.28 Lbs.

I am interested in this because I want to run a trial with lower P, higher K and this looks like it might help me accomplish that pretty easily. If my math is correct (highly questionable) mixing 1 part micro/1 part Grow gives 7-1-7...probably too low in P but then maybe chunk in a little bloom and maybe I can come up with something reasonable. First I wanna see what it does to Ca, Mg and S.

Sorry I am not knowledgeable enough to comment on where best to put the micros.
