Short term trades in the stock market •$$$$$•

and he used to play two groups of stocks, small pharma stocks and ethanol stocks. He made a killing watching these for news related pops.
I know a guy local that's played nothing but gold and silver stocks for about 25 years and a millionaire on basically minimum wage+ type income. He knows that area like the back of his hand and great when it comes to valuing a company. The guy is one cheap mofo and to this day does not have a credit card. The sacks of junk silver alone he's collected over the years brings tears to my eyes...lol!

I like being in things I can understand what the company is doing and how they fit into the marketplace and against their competitors.

Chris Manning told us of a guy that did nothing but trade the NASDAQ on 1 minute charts and a woman that only played island reversals and she made like 5-6 trades a year.

Zen - one thing I've been meaning to ask is what type of screening software are you using to find stocks to your liking to play? Only thing I ever used to sort through stocks was TC2000 but probably a bit behind the times.

Anything Pink or OTCBB or whatever you may call that stuff I avoided like the plague...since day 1.

Actually I have been using stockcharts.com's predefined scans and finviz.com to get lists of stocks to sort through. After that I identify stocks whose trends or single day actions I like. I have never heard of TC2000, whats it like?

I tend to trade in much the same way Sam is trading, I am looking for stocks which I can take a position in for anywhere from 5 minutes to 5 hours but never overnight. I may add overnighting looking for gap ups to my strategy later but it isn't something I have paper traded and tested yet and definitely not something I feel comfortable with in any way. Trading the Nasdaq on 1 minute charts sounds interesting, I couldn't do it because I am not a real "day trader" and I don't have the money to make the call if I reached the limit. As to island reversals, 5-6 trades a year and she made good money? Crazy.

PS: Sam, care to share how you are identifying your pop stocks?

If you're going to Short a cheap Stock..Go WEN or KKD.

Only need .14 cents to pay for the trade with 100 shares or .07 for 200 shares.Scottrade charges just $14.00 per trade.500 shares..just .02 pays for the trade.

Watching KKD or WEN can tell you the overall sentiment of the market before it happens.
I tried buying a stock and shorting the same one and still made it out ahead.I find the up and downs and in between wedges and fit inside the slide like UGI,KOL ..WEN is in a falling wedge pattern so you kinda can guess the sentiment.

I use the Barchart.com for the increasing RSI's...has excellent sectors/groups industry.

I'm actually Up 12% in 2 paper trading accounts. One of it is MMG for 11,000 at $1.02 Darn thing is hitting $1.29 after hours.

Like someone said..Relentless Bull and Goldbugs are a happy bunch. And Short KKD and WEN ;-)

Another way to find stocks that are moving is to head over to Fools and grab a few portfolios in the top ten and like the up comers..not the highest scoring ones.Around 500 to 2500 points and check their best/worst tabs.Sort of tells whats moving up.

One of them has BRD,EXK,GPL,UXG as winners on down days like this. All of them did a 44% Climb today as a group.

Google finance homepage, under the "trends" header click on the "price" tab. Also the "popular" tab sometimes will show big movers that won't be on the "price" tab.

Also on cnn website they have a "money" section or cnnmoney.com. There is a "markets" tab, put your pointer on it and a drop down box will show "pre-market trading". Sometimes you can find what to look for before the market opens, but they aren't very reliable. If you researching before the opening, they will have some good stocks to watch on the opening.

After more research, not seeing the weakness at the open I wanted and a general chip sector upgrade I bailed at the open. The general uptrend for QQQQ for the last 3 months has been on decelerating volume. Gonna watch things a little closer in the coming days.

Dollar getting crushed today. It continues it's race downwards to 0 value. Dollar down so equities and commodities up today.

Gold and Silver looking good right now. Even Cramer was saying buy Gold. That kind of scares me a bit. NYMEX Crude up past $100 today. Money in the bank.

On another note:
Bill Gross Asks The $64,000 Question: "Who Will Buy Treasuries When The Fed Doesn’t?" His Answer: "I Don't Know"; Gross Is Getting Out Of Risk ZeroHedge
After serving as the inspiration for the Chairsatan's latest appellation with his February missive, Bill Gross now goes for the jugular with the $64,000 question: with "nearly 70% of the annualized issuance since the beginning of QE II has been purchased by the Fed, with the balance absorbed by those old standbys – the Chinese, Japanese and other reserve surplus sovereigns. Basically, the recent game plan is as simple as the Ohio State Buckeyes’ “three yards and a cloud of dust” in the 1960s. When applied to the Treasury market it translates to this: The Treasury issues bonds and the Fed buys them. What could be simpler, and who’s to worry? This Sammy Scheme as I’ve described it in recent Outlooks is as foolproof as Ponzi and Madoff until… until… well, until it isn’t. Because like at the end of a typical chain letter, the legitimate corollary question is – Who will buy Treasuries when the Fed doesn’t?" Bingo, we have a winner. This is precisely the issue that Zero Hedge has been exposing over the past 6 months, and is the reason why the Fed is now locked in a QEasing corner from which there is no exit. To his credit, Gross attempts to provide an answer: "Someone will buy them, and we at PIMCO may even be among them. The question really is at what yield and what are the price repercussions if the adjustments are significant... What I would point out is that Treasury yields are perhaps 150 basis points or 1½% too low when viewed on a historical context and when compared with expected nominal GDP growth of 5%." And the stunner: "Bond yields and stock prices are resting on an artificial foundation of QE II credit that may or may not lead to a successful private market handoff and stability in currency and financial markets. 15% gratuities may lie ahead, but more than likely there is a negative two-bit or even eight-bit tip lying on the investment table. Like I did 45 years ago, PIMCO’s not sticking around to see the waitress’s reaction." Translation: Pimco just issued a "sell" rating on everything.

This was an interesting picture from the article. It shows the depth of monetization of our debt and what, I believe, will eventually be the collapse of our Ponzi economy. I believe impossible for Bernanke to Quantitative Easing. Printing money has become the market. It will last until it cannot anymore.

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. (MarketWatch) — Politicians lie. Bankers lie. Yes, they’re liars. But they’re not bad, it’s in their genes, inherited. Their brains are wired that way, warn scientists. Like addicts, they can’t help themselves. They want to sell stuff, get rich.

We want to believe they’re telling us the truth. Silly, huh? Both trapped in this eternal “dance of death” controlled by programs hidden deep in our brains, telling us what to do, telling us to ignore facts to the contrary — till it’s too late, till a new crisis crushes all of us.

Dow ends at 2 1/2-year highJoe Bel Bruno explains why stocks climbed to 21/2-year highs and extended their winning streak to a third consecutive week.
Psychology offers us a powerful lesson: Our collective brain is destined to trigger a crash before Christmas 2011. Why? We’re gullible, keep searching for a truth-teller in a world of liars. And they’re so clever, we let them manipulate us into acting against our best interests.

Compx trying to hold the 50ma
It's trying...watching to see what it does when it hits its down trending 10. Today's bounce is, once again as compared to the recent sell off days, coming on weaker vol than the sell off. How convenient was it they upgraded the chip sector right when the NASDAQ was at it's 50? Sometimes I wonder about those things. Still though some dynamics in the economy are improving/stabilizing.

Biz as usual for Goldman Sachs , trying to hold this lower double bottom area @ $160 ...small bounce like to see it hit $155 area
$155 will blow that potential double bottom apart. I'm more inclined to think it well get down where you'd like considering the volume drop into the current base with subsequent down days mostly coming on higher volume and no happiness on the up days...at all. GS also recently violated it's intermediary support at the 100 MA. Looks like a decent short.

I'm just gonna focus on QQQQ, triple Q's or the Q's...interesting chart...the down 10 is now crossing an up 20 while the issue is trying to hold its 50. Hoping the pressure will build a bit and this thing will squirt out of the formation and voting it'll be down. Got out clean this morning on my first short. I'm not feeling any impending disaster for the market tomorrow. This is the first time the Q's have tested the 50 in a long time and think it will fail pretty soon.

EOD (End Of Day) market impression from IBD...
Stocks made a tentative rebound Wednesday, recouping only a small piece of Tuesday's large losses and in light volume.
The end is near...probably not tomorrow but I do think soon.

I was watching PAY today, it popped good but watching the price action all day was driving me nuts. Low volume would raise the price or keep it nearly the same and the large volume would knock it down. I also didn't follow my system accurately and had a -0.3%. If I would have followed it +1.5% would have been easy. A lot of stocks did better than that today, but only because they have lost +10% in the last week, apart from oil and gas sector.

I exited 3 of my 4 "week+ hold" trades, ANR(-3.7%), ACI(+4.5%) and ONNN(-3%). Still in ROVI(this sob is killing me, hoping to get out tomorrow with <10% loss) and took new positions in FITB, S & WHR.

After I took new positions, I thought to myself "the way the market is behaving I should have at least half of my positions short."

I played hooky today so the pressure is on for tomorrow and Friday. Haven't jumped into the fray yet this week and I need to make a good pick tomorrow. I hate when the market feels like this, softly pushing up but knowing that volume could crush the market down at any moment.

Layoffs At Pre-Recession Level; Job Openings Down 30% By SCOTT STODDARD, INVESTOR'S BUSINESS DAILY Posted 06:50 PM ET

Twenty months after the worst recession in decades, job creation remains anemic, weighing on economic growth and making it even harder for the long-term jobless to find work.
Now those jobless, and everyone else, will soon be dealing with rising commodity prices trickled down to the store and at the gas pump.

Just another step down for middle class Americans. Not only do we not make as much as we used to, now our food is going to cost an inordinately large amount of our monthly income.

the thing i get is... ok when you buy shares fair enough.....

but what i dont understand is how come when you want to sell the shares on, you allways can, even if there is no "buyer"???? like you can trade shares at will, 5 hours etc, to make minute profits on them, etc.

is that what your doing?

There's always a buyer and that's the Market Maker which is the guy in the middle who guarantees liquidity meaning when it comes down to it he has to buy shares but the price he's offering may not be anything what you'd like to get...lol. Really though it's just a game of musical chairs and at times some people want the seats worse than others and pay for the privilege.
