Howdy y'all, issa me, couch locked. I was active on here from 2003-2012 heavily, 2012-2014 now and then sporadically. Im 2010 Lost access to old account (thats ehy my joint date is 2010)

Now that that's out the way, on to the reason for post.

I plan on doing a Small personal grow. Now that o-high-o is legal, i can do it without fear (quit in '14 when my first born happened, didn't want to risk anything with family in tow)

A 3x4 or 4x5 tent or 4x4. Lit with dual 600 hps/mh digis, or 4 315's.

Will do co2 enrichment with green air products cdmc-6 (showing my age, right. Lol) organic soil (as that's what i ultimately ended up mastering, started out hydro, transitioned to organics)

Just basically putting some of my old equipment to use.

But back to lightning. I been out the loop for a while, when I left LED sucked or if it was good it was absurdly cost prohibitive.

I've always known LEDs to be rather less dense. I'm seeing that technology has came a long way in the last 10 years.

So do LEDs yield comparable to a 600 w high pressure sodium? Like if I had a LED that was 590 to 600 w would it put out the same gram per watt benchmark that HPS will?

What are some brands to look for? I'll be lighting roughly 20 square feet. Strictly 1 week veg, the rest flower. This will be fed from ready clones or from a mother tent.

Also what genetics are the shit these day's?

I was a Big fan of tga (Jesus og, jilly, Ace of spades, etc) serious seeds (ak, White Russian), paradise seeds (nebula, wappa, sensi Star) soma seeds (nyc d, lavender) dj short (vanilluna, bb) big buddah (cheese) and sensi seeds (nl, Afghani 1, Afghani skunk, skunk 1, sensi skunk, super skunks, ed super bud)

U talk about these genetics with kids these days (god damn i said it) they look at you like your talking about "mids" 🙄😏

So tldr;
1) Good led recommendations that yield same as equal wattage HiD or better
2) good seed comp new genetics.

Ps, its glad to be making the decision to grow again, honestly haven't been satisfied with smoking since I ran out of my own. Finally can get rid of those knot's in my stomach that i get every spring smelling the soils and fertilizer in the stores . I used to smell that and get knot's in my stomach like i was doing something wrong by not growing this lovely plant anymore. I guess i was grieving and never got over it. Like making the conscious decision to do this again is making me Happy like i was able to resurrect my favorite dead family members.

Yes, leds will out produce HID, especially on a grams per watt basis, and generally from a g/squar ft though not as clearly. 600w led is about the same as a1000w hps; it maxes out a 4x4 with the right light.
Main thing though is that you have to grow different; with hps you sorta have a max temps of 80; leds have a minimum temp of 80 when giving high light intensity. Also read up on VPD which is what will make your led plants transpire. Do not grow plants with HPS climate, it doesnt work, this is why some people dont get good bud. Also an extra touch of calmag.

In your position why not chose both? A couple of cmh and some led strip concoction; they are not hard to diy.

If you are spendy go for HLG/horticulture loghting group; if youre not so spendy then maybe HLG DIY with boards, a 120w kit is about 50$ plus power supply. There are many other good manufacturers but id avoid chinese rebrands, mars, spiderfarmer and a few more.

Avoid: anything without proper info on diodes and driver/power supply (meanwell/inventronics are good but sometimes its a fake driver from chinese bstock)
Avoid anything blurple (purple light) and defo avoid starting your search on amazon)

Another issue you may run into is that your led buds look a bit smaller than big fat hps buds, but infact when you weigh in you see that the actual weight is more than your hps: white led light tends to actually make denser buds in the real meaning: small size but bigger weight. Hps is full of infra red which makes the buds bloat up a bit but its mostly water; led will lose less weight in drying.

I have both LED panels and 315s. The LEDs work for me. The (tropical sativa) plants seem happier under the CMH. That is my inexperienced input.

Ohio here too, btw.

Breeders I'm looking at: Ace, Mandala, Khalifa, Mr. Nice, Bodhi, crickets and cicadas, kwik. Probably others, but these guys all have some good sounding stuff.

Welcome

I can speak on the LEDs at least.
Did a very deep dive recently.

Main thing is to check diodes and drivers used.
They are often all the same parts, just manufactured by that company.
Then obviously the quality of the build. I’ve seen HLG get a lot of good response in this area.
But I don’t like their designs much.
Mostly boards, when bars are the way to go.

Grand Master Lighting is faar ahead of the competition in terms of spectrum.
I would say Mammoth lighting is the budget version of gml.

Other than those two, it’s really about parts used, and cost.

I have a spider farmer se 7000, and I’m happy as the ‘base light’.
But I added two independently controlled gml 8k bars with mint evo diodes plus 2 bars of Uv and 730infrared.
It is like a new light.

Stick with the 600. The HPS produces better final product and healthier plants. I went LED and went back to HPS. Much better.
It depends on the led youre growing with. Here one of our buds under horticentric fixture with a loooot of extra UV.
Close ups are unreal, think we may have even gone too far with the uv; amber tricomeheads everywhere.

Ok im hack, rooms finished, decided to use the mother in law suite in my loft bedroom area.

Included are My month long remodeling project starting after initial demolition and such

Ripped out old wall paper, ripped out kitchen sink that was in the hutch area, laid floor, ripped black all baseboards, and dumped tons of dap Kwik seal Plus ultra 3.0 caulk everywhere. Room is soo sealed, if you shut the door Even lightly from a quarter inch open, 8t defeats the passive back draft dampers in the exhaust manifold plate for the tents.

Installed w 100watt x 2 channel full bridge class d receiver to power 2x 8" woofer in walk speakers, installed 6 stage RO/DI/UV filter with booster pump.

5x5 tent has medic grow smart 8 plus, ac infinity ion beam s16 supplement side lighting, ION Bean u4 uv supplement inter hung between medic grow smart 8 bars.

The ion breeze pro circulation fan's in each tent, ac infinity t8 pro on 5x5 for exhaust, t6 pro on 2x4 for exhaust.

Lighting in 2x4 is 2 vipraspectra p1000s panels. They feature Samsung lmh301 and mean well drivers. The medic grow also runs lmh301's.

Got the AC Infinity lighted 5x8 dome for clone's with the heat mat with controller.

Tents have Thier inlines mounted on the other side of wall in attic storage space, that's where they dump into.

In the eve window, there's now a vent with a 3rd ac infinity inline (another t8 pro) attached to a carbon filter , it will come based on temp in attic, ut runs on 5 full Time, and will go to 10 if temps go above 90.

All intakes to lung room are filters with merv 10 HEPA filter, the house ac vent now has a 2nd mechanical damper that i can control to seal room off totally if desired. The wall on the wall and door i framed has 2 8" vents also filtered with MERV 8 HEPA. Also mechanical dampers i can open or close easily.

Tents intake filter are as follows
5x5 , in each of its lower 8" ports are Honeywell HEPA filter carbon disks for One of Thier fancy air cleaner allergy reducer machine's

2x4 tent with it's 6" openings have Dyson dc17 motor HEPA filters. They're 6" round as opposed to 8 like the Honeywells

Mixed up a 3.8 Bale kit of build a soil koots mix for flower (135 gallon total) and some build a soil 3.0 blend using roots lush as Base for veg, will mix this at a ratio with non amended Roots lush out the bag at anywhere from 33/66 to 50/50 or 66/33

Seeds planted are;
3x bubba Kush s1 from CSI Humboldt
5x lemon g x lemon party from CSI Humboldt
7x (ON Haze x OG Haze) x NL5 from todd McCormick AG seed
10x Northern lights #5 Inbred line from Todd @ ag seed

Planted in straight light warrior watered in with a solution of Great white myco after a 24 hour soak in distilled with 10% added 3% hydrogen peroxide.

After 24 hours all were split with tiny tap root sticking out

Now we're all caught up

After visiting a few led gardens of gardeners who know Thier shit, LED was hands down choice

I can confidently say, if you has worse results anywhere with LED, a person just wasn't utilizing them correctly or wasn't dialed in or couldn't make the transition from hid to LED smoothly.
Because I saw these things and they were on hid grown plants in every way.
