some landraces and heirlooms , only a generation from the source , or even a couple generations on can intersex more readily when outside of its climate it was raised . shit happens. i expect intersex on a few batches of seeds, and i just try and show zero tolerance when growing indoors as space and time is a big cost in electric and such

i woulda picked the balls off and see how they carried on. I've found balls at the meristem sometimes aren't a problem and they grow out of it. As long as they're not in the main flowers....

wake and bake , just checking my dahlia tubers , and 2 of the old stock malawi panama have germinated out of 3 , and non of the so called 'hmong ' thai have germinated as yet . conditions maybe a little cold , but they are inside a vented propagator , within a greenhouse, so they should be fine.

central dahlia tuber is throwing out shoots i can see

root problems ? have you had vibrant white roots ? i think low feed , and letting the soil over dry out ? just a guess

always inspect the roots . that will tell you a lot of information just based on the roots

outside the tap root will go to the sub soil and anchor roots spread wide throughout , the topsoil can become dusty dry for longer periods as opposed to small pots
