Setting up my first grow

Just picked up a DR90 myself the other day and those twins look nice.600w HPS is optimal over a 3' x 3' area, but a 400w HPS will suffice, just smaller yield.I'd use a 170 to 265cfm fan to cool the bulb in an aircooled reflector, and a small 4" 150 to 170cfm fan matched to a carbon filter for the tents ventilation.Exhaust all hot air into attic, another room,or out a window via a window exhaust box (simple box made from mdf, wood glue, screws.Cut holes for ventilation and light cooling ducting, paint inside black, lower and shut blinds, vrack window, fasten box over window).

Do NOT: Recirculate hot air from light cooling or ventilation back into the room the tent sits in or you will cause the temps in the room to go up causing temps in the tent to climb, exhaust somewhere other then that room.

What kind of numbers do you think you can pick up in a DR90? I'm thinking 9 plants, one per square feet. Decided to go with the 600W as well.

Can't I use the same fan for both moving the hot air around the bulb and venting the tent? Hmm, that reminds me. Will I need a second carbon filter for the veg chamber or can I connect another fan and some ducting to the same filter?

No, can't connect it that way...you could vent your veg into your bloom then out through the filter.

And it's been my experience that the vent from the bulb smells...even though it's not supposed to. People say...oh it's sealed so it doesn't get exposed to the odor. I don't know, not my experience.

Good Luck though...should work out fine...have fun

Would something like the attached sketch work? And yeah, it's picasso once more :dance013:

I would put the fan on the other side of the light...closer to the filter. Plus...I think the idea of venting the light is to pull fresh cool air from outside through and over the bulb then out...separately.

You could maybe try that set up without venting the light directly...just vent the whole tent.? Not sure...
Plus, what's the upper fan in the drawing? Is that an intake fan? for the veg spot??

Hmm I need to shoot head-nature an email and see what they think about it. Never thought about it that way to be honest.

The upper fan is just a small fan that will give the vegging plants some wind and will be pointing towards the ducting that goes to the bottom.

If I don't need to vent the light then I don't need the vented hood. But I've been told a 600W gets pretty hot. I'll get back to you when head-nature replies.

I'm not saying you DON'T need to vent the light...I'm just saying you should do it separately!! You want the light venting CONSTANTLY...the tent you want venting on a thermostatic controller, periodically..as needed temp dependent.

Ask them also about filter placement...I think you want to be "pulling" air through the filter, not "pushing" it through...??!

I didn't get the "fan" meaning from your image...you are going to want circulating fans in both areas for best results. In my "tent" I have 2 circulating fans and one extraction fan, passive intake. I run Adjust-A-Wing reflectors so no direct light venting...just the whole area gets vented. It's cold where I am though...so that helps me out with temp control.
