Selection from f1?

I recently made an f1 cross using two stable parents, one was a heirloom and the other was an f3.

If you read over DJ Short's notes and even over some stuff mendel wrote it seems that a true F1generation should be fairly uniform and you could technically take any male and female to make the f2 generation.

Should one do a selection in the f1 generation for the parents to make the f2 generation? Or could I just do an open polination and that way get a more diverse f2 generation?

Ideally I want a huge amount of phenos to choose from in my f2 generation.
Thanks for your input.

if the parents were pretty stable strains/lines,yes, go to f2 to select.

however if the parents were just random unstabilised hybrids, then you will already see a big variation in the f1 and you can do selection in f1.

in your case I'd just see what comes out of the f1 first, if they are all very similar you can go for open pollination, if you see there's already quiet some variation, you can do some limited selection(like elliminate the worst ones, but still keep most, just a mild selection pressure) in the f1, then go to f2 for the bigger/stronger selection.

when i buy packs that turn out to be stuff I really like , that checks all the boxes for my personal tastes , I will make "F2" from those packs using all the females and at least 2 males.
From there I hunt those new seeds for the plants that most fit the desired traits that made me want to make the seeds in the first place.
So it is in those F2's where i spend a lot of time in selection, ruthlessly seeking those desired traits and possibly discovering other plants that emerge with entirely different characteristics but may also be very desireable.

recently I made a cross with the Mendo Breath clone and a male from Scout Breath. The offspring have surprised me in that they are all the same with very little variation. Now to be fair , I have only popped 10 seeds but all those plants were darn near identical. They are at week 4 flowering right now so will be interesting to see how they finish.
Working the line further it may be very easy to make selections but I think the variations will show up in the next generation , or F2
