Seeking advice; Strain selection for first time grow.

Hi all,

This is my first post btw. I love the community here so far and have learned a lot already just browsing the threads.

Here's the situation. I used to be in the entertainment industry down in FL. I became a regular smoker because of the abundance of really good bud. Things change however and I moved back home. Unfortunately the selection and quality is not so great here and I gave up smoking for several years just because I had become very picky about my high. Pot snob, I'm guilty. :joint: I got an itch to check out homegrow options last week and BAM! Now I am addicted to thinking about growing my own bud! lol.

I have a small closet I want to setup in and have decided to go with a sea of green method. The problem is there are so many strains to choose from it is blowing my mind trying to pick just one to start.

I want to grow about six plants in close proximity to each other. I want a very social, happy, brainy type of high. No couch lock and absolutely no anxiety! A hardy, forgiving strain would probably go along way towards negating my lack of experience. (I've grown lots of things hydro, just never the bud.)

I was thinking about Dr. Greenthumb's "Chumaluma" or "J.J.'s Gold" but since coming to this forum I discovered Seedbay and "SOMA G13 Haze x Lavender" (the most beautiful plant I have ever seen!), as well as "Mist of Destruction BX" (sounds intriguing).

Any strain advice guys? Are the Doc and Seedbay safe to order from? Thanks in advance! (Especially for reading this long ass post.)

First off, welcome to ICMAG!

This is gypsy's site so I wont go into any details on the doc, but seedbay/boutique as well as doc chronic are all your most reliable vendors IMO.

As for the strain advice I would reccomend looking into it some more. Seems like you already have a good idea of what your looking for, so check out the smoke reports and grow threads to check out some different strains that fit your needs. Off the top of my head I would reccomend Flo or F13 from DJ Short, skunk #1 or nl5/haze from sensi or maybe even a c99 cross.

Best of luck to you, if you need any help, just let me know :D

Take care and stay safe

Welcome reaper, you have certainly found the best possible place to be when you catch the growing bug. I know I caught it and icmag became my homepage and much more haha.

Anyway, definitely go with seedboutique or seedbay as they are without a doubt the most reliable vendors out there. As far as strain choice, Flo or F13 from dj short is a fairly finicky, low-yielding plant (if I remember correctly, I haven't grown either actually) -- not really good for getting your feet wet.

For what you want in a strain, I can think of nothing better than C99 or a C99 hybrid. I'm currently at day 24 of flower with 3 Apollo 11's that I got from Doc Chronic's site. The A11, which is a cross of C99 and the Genius clone, is supposed to be really social and uppy weed.

"Apollo 11 can be considered "smart weed", very cerebral and thought provoking, a happy high and a citrus flavour." -from the description for A11 on dr.chronic's site (the breeder is spice brothers).

Good luck, bro.

Peace

i have one,(well maybe a few ) skunk #1 . it will give you a nice yield and is real tough .(super skunk too or any skunk strain fron sensi ). they are real cheap too .when we bought em they were like 20$ and ya got 15 seeds (skunk#1).we love it in our garden even along side sour disel and some other pretty strong stuff .i do love early pearl too . its tough , easy to grow and the taste is sweet and mild .so even if you went with the combo known as early skunk ... you'd be good to go (they're on special at seed bay ... the last of the 15 packs...lots to back you up if ya floink em up btw) good luck with your strain selection !may all be well .many blessings, hidingtree

Thanks for the warm welcome guerilla1018, dyren, and hidingtree! (you guys are posting faster than I can respond, lol.)

Yes, I was just digging around some more and found out DJ Short seems to be a favorite round these parts (checking out seedbay right now in fact). :chin: Funny thing is I kind of settled on a c99 or c99 hybrid a couple days ago. Seems like every time I find "the one" I find another right after. :yummy: Course when I first started looking around I fell in love with the Kali-mist but damn I could never reign in that suckers stretch even if I found the seed!

Yea, I definitely have the growers itch! I checked out several forums before I found this wonderful site.

Sorry to Gypsy if I broke etiquette mentioning the other breeder. :pointlaug
Just some bud that looked/sounded like it might fit my bill.

Back to researching and dreaming.

forgot to say , seedbay is safe to order . just read all of the in fo in the faq's and stuff thouroughly . where they are in britain its legal to sell the cannabis seeds . the only problem i have seen is seeds confiscated by mail if it is illegal in your country . so , the safety of ordering them is yes . how they are recieved depends on your countries' scrutiny i suppose .good luck . may you recieve your seeds safely .

OMG, that F-13 looks phenomenal! High sounds perfect for me too. Going to dig up some grow reports on that stuff while I contemplate selling a kidney...

Dr. Chronic definitely has some cheap seeds. Something to consider for building up my grow skills on.

Checking out the sensi too. You guys have given me a lot of options, thank you!

yeah the F13 is great, dyren is right though, it may be a tough task for a first grow. I had reccomended it based on what you were looking for in the high, but she is pretty stretchy and finicky again as dyr said. Id say go with the c99 or a cross first, then the F13 or Flo. Whatever you choose I wish you all the best, and again if theres ever anything I can help with, let me know :D

One thing you have to understand reapersgaze is that when you ask chronic stoners like us what strains they recommend, the majority will name the most potent strains they know. They're great strains, but many of them can make a novice smoker puke or fall into a coma.
Somehow, it doesn't sound like you're looking for a knock-out strain, but just a quality high that makes you feel good. A happy day-time toke that makes you appreciate music or whatever's outside of your window.
In your shoes, I would not go for C99. It is a great strain, but so strong and racy that a joint or two can blow up the slightest anxiety to full-fledged paranoia.

I would go for a softer, Sativa-dominated smoke. A hybrid, because growing real-deal Sativas in a SOG cabinet isn't really doable.
I would have recommended Blueberry, but it's kind of finicky to grow. Power Plant (Dutch Passion) is a very good sativa without too much stretch, a fabulous yield and easy to grow. It gives a warm, energetic upp-buzz, not the strongest, but nevertheless top bang for your buck.
Kali Mist stretches a bit, the high is top class, but on the strong side. Still, very good daytime smoke.
S.A.G.E is also a tad strong, but fairly easy to grow, and with a world class hazy high.

Hmm. I want the strongest strain I can get for the high I am looking for. And you are correct, sir. I don't want to be stoned, I want to be elevated, enlightened, distilled into a primal understanding so deep I could share a cage with an anaconda and fear no harm, for the force is strong with me.

After I smoke and somebody asks me how I'm doing I want to go into a Dennis Miller like diatribe on what feeling is and how I am indeed feeling 'it'. I want my stride to encompass the world, sir.

I don't want to sit there and go "Duuuuuuuuhhhhhhhhhh! Cronk hungry! Cronk want nachos...".

And thank you for the bean advice, Rosy Cheeks. I am checking those out right now. (Does, S.A.G.E. go by some other name? Having a hard time finding it.)

P.S. Paranoia bad. Paranoia make Cronk scary. Scary Cronk hurt in place where thinks come from. Cronk like waving at cops and smiling big smiles.

Edit: While checking out the Dutch Passion strains on Seedbay I found this "DPF5 Strawberry Cough". Sounds very promising. Any opinions?

Hmmm. Seems the more I check into the Sativa ladies the more I see comments equating 'racier' highs being more prone to anxiety, where as 'stones' negate the anxiety. Heard some bad words about the cough from dutch passion. Heard some good words about the power plant. Why does there have to be so much good weed out there?

The solution: I am buying seedbay. Anyone willing to bankroll me? :)
Might just put the contenders on the dart board to answer the question once and for all!

Strawberry Cough is a great strain, but I have heard alot of bad reviews on the DP version. I personally would stick it out with another strain such as the sage, get to know her,and then try to aquire a cut of KK's strawberry cough clone. While it has not been every review on DP's version that was bad, but you would not have much odds of finding a good pheno in a 5 pack, just my opinion though.

If you could deal with a tricky plant to grow though, I would still say F13 or Flo is dead on for the high you are describing. I have not grown the F13 yet, but I cant see her being that tough :chin: maybe check out a grow report or check out one of GentlemanFarmer's threads on his F13 girl :yummy:

best of luck

I hear ya guerilla! My browser keeps finding it's way back to that F13. I actually dreamed about harvesting and smoking it last night. I'm not even kidding. I swear I've got a crazy obsession over this. If I'm this bad now, how much of a grow addict am I gonna be when I actually start, I wonder?

I have taken a vow: I will smoke nothing till I yield my own!

Believe it or not, I actually checked out all of GentlemanFarmer's F-13 threads just the other night. That man has one of the sickest (as in fantastic) looking plants/pheno I have ever seen and I LOVE his/other's smoke descriptions.

Ok, that does it. F-13 it is. I'm doing it! My beans will probably be confiscated. My grow will probably fail horribly, but hell... If I can actually pull it off from seed to cure my feet will forever be set on the path of righteous freedom! DJ Short, here comes the reaper!

Soon as I scrounge up the cash. :p Time to bounce over to the Indoor grow threads and start putting the list together.

P.S. Thank you one and all for making me feel welcome. I love this community.

LOL :biglaugh: sounds good reaper. Im pullin for you :D

I made the same commitment when I first started growing and Ive never looked back. I had the same attitude too, verything that can go wrong, will, but Im ure you'll be fine. As long as you got the basics down (AIR, WATER, MEDIUM, NUTES) youll do allright. I'll have to ask GF for some specifics on the F13 that could maybe help you along.

Again and as always, if you need help with setting up, what to buy, or whatever comes along, just shoot me a pm and I'll give you a hand or else find someone who can :D

take it easy, and good luck :joint:

I would try Speed Queen from Mandala. Cheap, hardy, and a very energetic buzz without the paranoia, stretching or 12+ week flower time. You can find quite a few Mandala grows in their forum here at ICmag. I'm sure some of Mike's other strains would be great too but I've only tried Hashberry and Speed Queen so far.

my recommendation for a first grow is to stick with something simple with good genetics, like skunk #1 or some sativa crossed with northern lights. I've read alot of good things about mandala (expecting my kalichakra soon now), but stick with no-BS genetics. Nirvana's cali-o has a nice 'up' high as well, is a good producer, smells great and is relatively easy to grow. good luck with whatever you pick out!

SAGE is from THSeeds, check their offerings at just about any vendor and you should see it listed

as for the C99 recommendations, i'd be careful since u mentioned not wanting something paranoia inducing as it can really be a bit too racy for a lotta people like Rosy Cheeks mentioned...Dyren nailed it though with apollo11...even though it's in the same genepool as c99, would fit almost exactly what it sounds like you're after fwiw
