Seedlings and bio dome question

How long do seedlings stay in the bio dome. Do they stay in there until they fill it out or just until they sprout? I have 10 seeds planted in jiffy pots inside this bio dome. All ten have sprouted and our now developing there 2nd set of leaves. Im using 2 24" flouros right now for them. When is it safe to use my 600hps? They are all about 3-4 inches tall now. Thanks

i would think you can pop the top now, and you can start setting the little ones under the big light any time really as long as you set the light about 3-4' feet above the girls put them around the edgesnot right under the light. after about a week and no deaths start lowering the light a few inchs every day or two till you hit the 24'' mark, then let them grow.

jiffy pots are ok, but i think if you go to home depot, most handle premire promix, use this for starting the little ones same stuff the greenhouses use, no nutes and phed balanced.

it also works for normal growing as well, just need to add pirlite about a 70% soil and 30% pirlite. some blood meal, bone meal, water the pots with epomsalts in water (@ 1/2 teaspoon per gallon) good one time and then as needed.

you can use cal mag as well, instead of the epomsalts. just remember to mix the soil everyday for about two weeks before planting. i use large plastic garbage bags.

the bone and blood meal is also at hd under the name of vigero, both are water soluible in powder form. aslo add about a half gallon of distilled water to the planting mix when first made up this will help get things going in the soil.

i mix 2 cups bone and blood meal per 32 qaurts of soil and this can be adjusted to your plants next around and will give enough food till its time to flush at light change to 12/12. then hit them with a bloom fert and at the end, a week before chopping flush them one more time.

hope this helps

I wouldnt use a dome to start seedlings, you're going to develop a hell of a stretch.Seedlings go through an initial stretch right when they break ground and its best to have the tube floro's literally 1/4 inch above the tops at all times.Grow the plant to 4 or 5 inches this way and it'll be more effective than using your HID

thanks for the responses. I did in fact notice some stretch while in the dome but i didnt know this wasnt normal. I have since removed the dome and placed them under my hps light. once they get a little bigger i will repot into there perm pots. Thanks again for all ur help.

If you have flourescent tubes, you will grow a healtier, greener more vibrant bushy plant if you keep them 1/4 inch under the tubes until 4 or 5 inches,if you choose a HID at this point thats OK too,but dont expect your plants to look anything at 4 or 5 inches like they would if you started them under the flo tubes.

i just germed and put into a bio dome in peat pods. i also noticed some stretching in the first one up so ive taken the top off and sunk my cfl real low down close. i think its helped but now the peat pods dry out really quick from the fan blowing on cfl!!

Soon as the seeds sprout, remove the dome.
As far as lighting, I have used CFL's for a couple off weeks to veg. But as a rule, after first week you can place them with HID's. Just start them off a good distance away ( 4-5ft above or to the side within the light circle) and move closer every day.

SP,do yourself a huge favor man go to home depot or lowes and get a 4 ft 2 lamp shoplight.I have the one with curved white reflectors, they're pretty common.Use this method to start you new seedplants and newly rooted cuttings, remember literally 1/4 inch from the tops at all times.Even if the leaves occasionally grow into the lamps a tad it only means you're doing it correctly.Thank me later bro.EDIT Almost forgot most important part lol,at 4 or 5 inches you want to take the little bush with 20 or so leaves and set her under a HID at a few feet to start
