It is documented by many people that oftentimes a single seed if found. I have seen no scientific data to back it up.
One explanation could be the plant knows she has not been pollenated and produces a single male flower so small that it gives only a grain of pollen. It would have to be very small as a single male flower could pollenate a group of plants in the right conditions. The seeds that are found are also usually immature. This leads me to believe that the seed was started very late......
