Seed and international air travel

Long time lurker, first time posting, finally made the cross over.

For the past year I have been growing my own, I have learnt alot through IC and trial and error and have reached the point where I want some quality genetics.

I live in New Zealand, a country that has very strict bio security so for numorous reasons I cannot risk having the seeds shipped here. Research has shown that seeds do make it through but not always.

In a couple of months time I am visiting the UK to visit family and such, while there I want to order some seeds, around 40 in total. Does anyone have any experience or knowledge to help, I can think of 4 options:

1. Distribute amongst my checked luggage and hope seeds are too small to be seen on the scanner.
2. Distribute amongst my carry on bag.
3. Keep on person either just in my poket or perhaps behind my balls.
4. Place seeds in a pack of seeds that are aloud to be imported and declare on entry.

Flight is routed via Hongkong, all discussion welcome.

I would say seal and swallow but body temp my be a bit warm for seeds. Same goes for behind the balls and with scanners and gropers in airports these days it's no longer a safe spot. Your junk gets a lot of attention going through security these days, not like it used to be.

Never travel with contraband in checked bags.

My suggestion; have a bag of chips or something in your carry-on and place seed packet in the bottom of the bag. They don't want to deal with a greasy open bag of chips, plus chips and seeds are both very light and thus won't be inspected as guns/knives/bombs tend to be dense and heavy.

Or do the deodorant bar trick, again in your carry on.

good luck ya smuggler edit: oh and this is based off experience flying out of the states. not sure if you have scanners or gropers over there yet. also "chips"="crisps"

Also from NZ, welcome to site :) haven't done it myself but I think keeping them on you person would be best option as personnel scanners are metal detectors rather than x-ray.

I think declaring them amongst other seeds is asking for trouble.

Good luck! :)

it would be awesome if you would update this thread if/when you actually do this and tell us what you did and how it worked.

Good luck!

Just an idea. Buy a new zippo type lighter, take out cotton stuffing, fill with seeds, replace cotton stuffing.
Has worked in the past, more than once.

Thanks for insightful ideas guys, keep them coming

@foxmulder: I have never had my balls handled in the past, I dont think they have brought in the body scanners in NZ yet, does anyone know about Hongkong? This is certainly something I will look into, would this highlight seeds in my pocket?

@Throbba: Good advice, on the pocket idea, I always seem to get sniffed by the drug dogs upon entry, never been search only questioned. My thinking of declaring them as other seeds on the ok to import list is that even if they dont make it and get sent to bio sercurity they will just be listed as unsafe seeds and not put me on the polices radar.

@Third coast: This sounds like a good plan, Im guessing the metal case stops the scanner seeing the organic matter? Did you put it in your checked bag?

Ya bringing back any electronics? Open up your metal "camera" and stick some seeds in. Far as I know, no detector can penetrate metal. Mind you, which airline or airport is going to disassemble a camera, a laptop, a clock, etc. looking for a few seeds. Never tried it though so you might wait to have some corroboration. Had some contraband loosely distributed, in my view, in my carry-on in 2009 that was not found or just ignored.......even though the carry-on was thoroughly searched. Marijuana seeds are not a priority.

I would just distribute the seeds throughout everything. Baggage, hidden containers, on your person. Surely they couldn't find all of them. I don't think I would bunch them all together.

I did see a post where some guy was smuggling into Russia in some heavy wool lined glove.

dogs can smell seeds.

Heres a trick. Get a toothpaste bottle, carefully cut open the end, between the seams. Empty out the toothpaste. Put in some vaseline, about two tbsp's, then put in your seeds (ziplock bag them first), and then add more vaseline to fill the rest of the bottle. Then glue it shut, and throw into your CHECK ON luggage...not carry on.

i've done this a few times. always worked.

Yep that's the idea, and with a lighter like that you have two layers of metal, the inner case and outer.
Carry it with a pack of smokes and throw it on the conveyor with your wallet, coins and what not.

Again thanks for the responses, great discussion.

@Skinny leaf: This was my original thinking, that if they were spread throughout my luggage in jean pocket etc... that they would simply be too small to be apparent on the scan, particularly as i will be bringing lots of random junk from my belongings that are still in my mums loft.

@Rouge: I may buy a camera while in Hongkong doupt it will be made of metal though, i think the zipo idea my be key if i decided to go down this route.

By the way I tried to rep some of you guys but I dont think i am able to yet, is this the case?

As far as I know this would not be possible as you are not allowed to carry a lighter onto the plane for safety reasons.

Sandwich them between 2 pieces of masking tape and have this "seed strip" in your pocket as you go through the metal detector. Don't have anything metal whatsoever on your person. This may or may not work.

News to me.
It has been a few years since I've traveled with a lighter.
I guess there are hundreds of ways...
Sew them in the brim of a hat, the collar of your shirt, the cuff of your pants...

better off getting them shipped to you under diff name and diff address. Not worth risking @ airport except maybe a few loose seeds in the pocket.

If they dont get thru in mail you just loose your dough.
just my opinion

Having the seeds shipped really is not an option, my research has shown that there is a high chance of them not getting through, although i could only find a little info. I also do not have anywhere to ship them too, I have to be very careful because of my occupation so literally no one knows that I smoke or grow.

The money belt idea may work, I also like the idea of sewing them into my clothes. The one thing that puts me off hiding them elaborately is that if I do get court out its clear that I was trying to deceive. If they were spread out in my luggage amongst different jean pockets I could say that I had collected them while helping a friend in the garden and forgotten about it. I would possibly get a harsh fine but the seeds would simply be destroyed no questions asked.

Does anyone know the name of the new type of xray machine they use in America so I can research Hongkong?

How do smokers have a smoke during layover? If lighters aren't allowed I imagine matches are not either?
Anyway, sewn into your pant cuff. Some jeans that you bought in the UK at a resale shop.
This is getting fun.

Seeds are SO easy. You can hide them in electronics in your checked bags or just about anything else.
I have my own method which I know works:
Wear sneakers, Nikes, Reebocks, whatever. Take out the laces. Insert seeds in lace holes. Put laces back in. Done. Never fails.
