secrity risk to post pics of flowers?

Is there a security risk in posting pictures of one's flowers on IC?

It is inspirational looking at all the wonderful grows, but somehow it just doesn't feel comfortable to upload any.

As long as you dont place your plants next to your car, and accidently snap a shot of your licenceplate you should be ok :muahaha:
Just be aware of anything in your pics, that might help identify you, and remove it from the shot.

Before you post your pics, you should clean all the meta-data from them using jStrip. It's a program that removes information about you cam, which has been attached to your pic. This information as far as I'm aware, can even contain the serialnumber of your cam. After jStrip though, it's all gone.

^ yeah alot of pictures I see have way to much evidence about them ( hand , background of house, pictures hanging, flooring of house, outside of house, trash outside of house )

I say if your gonna take a picture of a plant, take it of the plant then

Its really nice seeing other ppls grows, but you know, as most ppl grow where flowers are not recognized as medicine, posting pics adds to the security risk, IMHO, and is not worth it.

So to all the medic-growers posting pictures - thank you - but for the viewers out there: I wish I could, but I can't!

As long as there's no identifying info in the file's metadata and nothing in the picture itself to identify you, I don't see any problem with posting. I post picts of my grows. I seriously doubt the DEA or any LEO is going to come after you based on a pict you posted. For all anybody knows, you could just be posting a pict you found on the internet claiming it as your own. Posting a pict is not probable cause.

Now if LEO comes to your house with a warrant and you have a computer full of picts of your grow, that's a different story. Assuming of course they find something other than just the pictures.

even if in medical compliance, you have rippers and federales to worry about too, not just regular popo.

imo, posting pics of your flowers and veggies is a bad idea if such flowers and veggies are recognizible and can be linked back at you... posting pics of wild fruits, veggies and flowers that grow on their own in the fields, it is cool, but in your house? no way, what if a neighbor who check outs my flowers every morning logs onto this forum to learn how to grow? then puts 2 + 2 together? too much of a chance.

i wouldnt be to worried about it,
if they are searching your internet records, it is safe to say they have alot of other info on you.

i would be as discrete as possible though (ie, no face pictures, etc)

i beg to differ, worry about it... your posted pics of your home garden will give away your identity, taking away the burden of proof popo has in order to demostrate who or what is actually behind one of these screen-names.

be safe everyone

I would also be careful where you're posting the pictures from. Using your home computer to post here without any sort of proxy is probably not a good idea.

Also, be careful where you're posting the pictures to. Create a separate set of accounts for all clandestine activities.

1.) Separate email, always accessed through a proxy server/tor anonymity network. (Remember to use https for anything involving passwords/accounts. Only drop https for browsing.)

2.) Separate photo account. Always access the photo storage site through a proxy/tor. You will think to do it when you upload the photo, but that is a moot point if you have logged into that account from your home machine before. It's still pointing at you.

3.) I always login to this site through proxy/tor using https, but I am probably a little more paranoid than you. That being said, if you do 1 and 2, you might as well keep your account here a secret as well, just in case access logs ever get out. (Which would tie you to the accounts in 1 and 2.)

Also, like everyone has said, do strip the meta data out of your image files. It will identify you if someone wanted to find out. And if you went to all the trouble of masking your ip address, it would instantly tie your computer to all of those accounts. So... avoid that. :)

Ok, so basically, if you know nothing about how proxies and stuff work - dont post a pic?

C'monn, I am an astitst, not a computer geek!

Step 1:
If you know nothing about proxy servers and you are using windows, I would go download the tor/vidalia bundle. I would use this in conjunction with FireFox, which will put a button on the lower right hand corner of your browser. This button will tell you whether or not you are in anonymous mode. (Click it to go anonymous.)

Step 2:
While browsing anonymously, sign up for a new email account. NEVER use this account without having tor enabled first! (You will see a button in the lower right hand corner.)

Step 3:
Using your new email account and with tor enabled, sign up for a new photo account at flickr or something. If you used gmail for step 2, you probably don't have to do too much more. NEVER use this account without having tor enabled first!

Step 4:
If you are not worried about your account here, you can skip this step. Otherwise, using your new email account and with tor enabled, sign up for a new icmag account. You will want to make sure that the address bar says "https" before entering any account information. (You will have to tell FireFox to accept an expired ticket by adding an exception.) Same rules apply about using this account ONLY while in anonymous mode. (Tor Enabled.)

Step 5:
Post your grow log with pictures anonymously with your new clandestine set of accounts. Also, be sure not to leave other personally identifying information out or talk about anything that could easily identify you.

Almost all cameras show the make, model and the time the pic was taken, resolution and so on. I have heard there are some that give the serial number of the camera but have yet to see one. I don't know if it's rumor or truth......

As has been said, as long as you don't take pics with incriminating background info you are fine.

BTK was caught because of metadata on a .doc file....

Removing/editing it would of saved him from being caught...

windows vista u can quickly remove all personal info from multiple pics, select them, right click to properties. Then Details>remove personal info.

Change it to REMOVE THE FOLLOWING PROPERTIES.

Select ALL in the bottom right, Hit okay, and watch it work

Proxies and paid services are very easy to use really, but I've had trouble finding good working free high anonymity proxies in the past couple years and I don't really trust anonymizers anyways. You'd think that either the gov't runs some of them or has an undetectable in. So FWIW I've settled for OperaTor
http://archetwist.com/en/opera/operator

It's very easy to use, so I recommend it to other non-geeks. Yes it's PITA slow but what can I do.

The email account that I used to sign up here was signed up with tor, and this account, and all my posts. And I don't even have a camera.
