Sealing up door gaps in cabinet with inner tubes! (pics and how to)

Damn, you're a genius and I'm an idiot. I've seen people do that up here in the entryway to seal the arctic door.

I can attest durability is pretty decent, I've seen those setups go a few seasons in pretty rough weather before needing to be replaced.

Wow. Great thinking. I've been keeping myself up at night thinking about light/air leak solutions for a cab with those pocket hinges.

Can you show me how you handled the inside top corners of the doors? I can't see how you can attach the rubber and at the same time make it so you can open the door. Also, I do not have any old tubes laying around. Would a self-sealing innertube do the job? Something like this:

This is a great simple idea. I could see this being used for sealing up other things as well. Good work

I do believe I actually lost some sleep over this too (not kidding)!

Any tube would do I s'pose, I would skip the self sealing ones as I think they usually have coatings or slime on them and would cost a bit more. I mountain bike alot so I go through a tube very week or two. Your local bike shop probably throws about about 30 of them away each day. I would avoid having to buy one, but if so---any 2" mtn bike tube would do.

I can't post a pic right now (camera is on vaca, I'm not--sigh) but I can explain what I did...My attic space has no light, it's just fans and power strips so I just sealed that edge with weatherstripping. Where the tube meets the stripping, I just cut an extra inch or so of tube and overlapped it. If finishing out a corner, you can just overlap the tube or cut extra...it's very forgiving. This pic is bad but kinda shows what I mean.

geopolitical--Some people just come up with the solutions as a matter of coincidence. When I started growing, everything I looked at had to be have a dual purpose...('member the 'Tootsie Roll' theme?)...whatever it is I think I see, becomes a Toosie Roll to me...' Anyway, one day while replacing my umpteenth inner tube, the idea for recycling a few of them hit me. Version 1.0 with the furnace tape was a bit inelegant, the version with the Gorilla tape is holding strong now a year later! I've said it before and I'll say it again: I hope they legalize weed soon, so we can all start tinkering with the cure for cancer!

stickyickyicky, Frank, Ninja and others, thanks for the kind words!

i did the same thing as the bike tire, except i just cut a piece of black and white reflective visqueen plastic (black to the outside obv) and it works perfect but good recycling!

bikmike, I spose visqueen would work. Hey, whatever keeps the light in (or out) For me, the tubes were the key for detailing out the pocket hinges, but also becuase it stretches. Let us know how it works in a few months, you may be onto something too!

montana, the key for me was the staples. I tried it first with just tape and it didn't work, the staples hold it together, the tape finishes the light seal. I actually have to repair a few tape spots by now a year into having this on my setup, but I have been lazy--it's still holding. I actually have to replace the store bought weatherstripping by now, but gorilla tape is strong stuff.
