Heh, hemp twine sounds good, except it might get moldy. I might smoke it too.
Seriously though - found some options in aquaculture netting, bird netting, deer netting - all of which have more incentive to sell "green" products, obviously.
But what I'd *like* to get my hands on is some Vexar brand construction fence - eco-safe plastic, 2" square mesh, strong but flexible. The runner up is this 2.25" square mesh deer fence I found elsewhere.
My specific concern with plastic is that it's safe. PVC - the majority of what's in hardware stores - is not. It's smelly, toxic shit. Polypropylene is safer, esp. the high-density stuff. That Vexar stuff is green certified too. If you're familiar with the grade numbers of plastic (found on the bottom w/ manufacturing info) it'd be best to go with a 1, 2, 4, or 5.
Spraypainting chickenwire is a possibility too I guess if the paint's non-toxic...
Fishing line's good cuz it's transparent - but it's also usually made of nylon, which I'm not sure about...
FreezerBoy: if it's not woven or somehow tied together how would it stay in a mesh?
(I'm beginning to feel like an old crank, but I'm not, I swear!)
Been thinking about putting together ideas for "greener" grows, in the ecologically sound sense. I mean, it could obviously be taken to a ridiculous extreme, like anything else.
But in some cases where there are known toxic side effects from certain materials - and to counter stupid shit like people using Lysol bubblers to control odor -- in a lot of cases, peeps just don't know any better. We take these everyday things like plastics for granted as if they've always been there. They haven't, and we don't know if there's any correlation between long term use and some health issues that are now problematic that weren't so much before.
Just remember that one of the pivotal reasons for the fall of the Roman Empire was the Patrician ruling class' use of lead plumbing ("plumber" translates into 'worker of lead'.) After many generations of the use of lead plumbing, the Patricians' children were getting dumber and dumber from lead poisoning, but the Plebians who didn't use the plumbing and relied on wells had no such issues.
In fact, the Patricians tasted something metallic and funky in food cooked with water from their plumbing - but instead of putting two and two together - they made a super-pungent sauce from rotten fish to cover the taste of the lead instead! In the end, the leadership core of Rome had idiot, lead-poisoned offspring who could never hope to maintain the empire their fathers had carved out.
When I think about this, I think about the 60Hz EM field we're constantly bathed in from our power grid, and that cancer cells grow 10x faster in a strong 60Hz EM field in the lab...
Which doesn't mean I'm about to give up electricity, necessarily - just to remain a little skeptical and open-minded.
I don't know that a mesh or weave is even required. It's simply convenient to buy it that way. A series of parallel strings would do the same thing. How big a screen are we talking about? 3 feet or less and, if the string is tight, there will only be maybe an inch of lift in the middle of the "screen". Even a mesh will lift in the middle unless you're talking of a thick wire grill.
Again, we wouldn't be weaving (or crossing) 600 threads per inch. We're talking one thread every two inches.
a couple different companies make it and it comes in different lengths, but this is by FAR the least expensive. Also has decent foaming on the outside and is definitely plant safe.
here's another company's version of it for just over triple the price you only get 1.5 times the length.
you could definitely make a scrog screen out of it. just pick up 2 of those 16' ones.
i know you would rather go with non metal, but kennel fencing is the way to go. the 2"x2" openings are perfect for a scrog. i've had a screen for over 5 yrs. and there is no rust at all.
Kite string, nylon string, any kind of string is best. Make the frame out of pvc tubing and drill holes every two inches. Start the string in one hole and run it to the adjacent hole then to the next, until you have one side, then just start the opposite side till you have a checkerboard.
When it comes time to harvest, simply cut the string and pull the whole thing out in one long pull. Or, cut it at every hole and just lift the strings out.
For an easy pull, use fishing line. It may well cut through a stalk, so be aware of that if you are taking pics after.
garden trellis would be my only choice @ $3 a meter x 1300mm perfect for a 600wt room width. this wont cut into plants and come harvest take all above screen, remove screen and let the popcorn finnish if it was left on.
