Rope from stalks and big stems

I made a piece or two of twine from stems. MJ stems have long strong fibers desirable for rope in olden days. The rope pot was tall and not so potent.

Rope made from hemp fibres was used to seal the cracks in ships.

After laying down the planks etc, there were always cracks, so to make it watertight, hemp rope was forced into the seams and then coated with tar.

isn't rope made from hemp stronger, more durable, and longer lasting than rope made from wood or whatever it's normally made of? i think i've heard that before. i know hemp paper lasts a hell of a lot longer than regular wood paper and can be recycled many more times before it becomes useless, so i assume rope would also last longer

And to think I was wasting all these stalks by beating them into pulp and drying them for toilet paper.

I guess the old line in the Dean Martin and Jerry Lee movies is really lost on todays uninformed. the line was, " dont smoke the rope." they were on a naval ship in WWII. the avg ship had tons of hemp in various forms. mooring lines, ruck sacks, tarps, ect... history....
