RIP Gene Wilder

R

Rubber Chicken

Oh my, another great one is gone. Stir Crazy and Blazing Saddles and so much more.
Him and Gilda together again... She went way too soon...
I hope Richard Pryor greeted him as he arrived.
RIP Gene Wilder

I imagine Gene seeing Richard in the cloudy heavens.......

Gene 'Hey, Richard, long time no see my friend'

Richard (looking in the wrong direction) 'GENE?? Yes it has you old b*stard'

Gene 'Who are you looking at Richard?'

Richard (pretends to fix contact lenses) 'Oh there you are, damn contacts' (still looking in wrong direction)

I'm gonna get blazed hard (I usually only use enough to medicate) and watch Blazing Saddles right now.

He had to have been any directors dream, he always delivered his lines so perfectly, he always knew what the audience would see & hear, he understood every scene as if and as well as he wrote them.

Wilder will be missed, at least he left behind a lifetime, his lifetime, of entertainment.......

I'll tell you later how my dad delivered a line right out of 'Stir Crazy' better than Wilder did it himself. I'm gonna get to my film :)

in the news today.......

A statement released by Wilder’s nephew, Jordan Walker-Pearlman, reveals that Wilder was deeply concerned that, due to his character of Willy Wonka being regarded as such a cultural touchstone, he would become a morbid figure in the eyes of contemporary children, as well as adults who grew up with the film, because of his Alzheimer’s.

The statement reads; “It is with indescribable sadness and blues, but with spiritual gratitude for the life lived that I announce the passing of husband, parents and universal artist Gene Wilder at his home in Stamford, Connecticut.”

“We understand all the emotional and physical challenges this situation presented we have been among the lucky ones – this illness-pirate, unlike in so many cases, never stole his ability to recognise those that were closest to him, nor took command of his central-gentle-life affirming core personality.”

“The decision to wait until this time to disclose his condition wasn’t vanity, but more so that the countless young children that would smile or call out to him ‘there’s Willy Wonka,’ would not have to be then exposed to an adult referencing illness or trouble and causing delight to travel to worry, disappointment or confusion.

He simply couldn’t bear the idea of one less smile in the world.”

I have something very special to look forward to, I've never seen 'Willy Wonka' (with or without his chocolate factory), and in fact I was blissfully unaware that it even existed (as a Gene Wilder flik) until about ten years ago when that meme started appearing everywhere.

I'd heard of the story & that it was a movie ever so rarely over the decades, nobody ever elaborated on it, the circle of friends that I ran w/back in the '70s and beyond

didn't really chat up kids movies :dunno:

So, I'm really looking forward to viewing 'Willy Wonka' soon, I've got some good bud to blaze and so it's only a matter of finding the time in my busy :needcoffee: schedule.......

You must! Depp did the role no justice. Wilder is the only Wonka for me.

In truth, I thought he had already passed - so long since I had heard anything about him. I don't think theres a Wilder movie that I haven't seen - many times over.

I'll tell you later how my dad delivered a line right out of 'Stir Crazy' better than Wilder did it himself. :)

in the '70s & '80s I owned several vintage M-B SL coupes, the one I was driving in today's story was the 2nd SL I bought, a '69 280SL. I was driving into work to Manhattan to the warehouse we rented for dad's import business, dad was sitting next to me on a warm spring day in '81, we were on the Major Deegan Expwy in The Bronx.

Traffic was light and I was probably doing 65+mph w/the top down when I nodded off at the wheel; getting home at 4am to wake at 6:30 was a recipe for disaster, we were on a downhill grade on the Deegan approaching the Van Cortland Pk exit, all 3 lanes were at a standstill, def a bad time for a nap.

Suddenly I'm awakened by shouting in the car, "Wha! Wha!! WHA!!! WHA!!!" The same line Wilder delivered when the judge sentenced them to 125 years in prison in Stir Crazy. And although Gene Wilder was reacting to a 'life sentence' of sorts my dad saw the same, but much more imminent outcome. My eyes shot open & I hit the hooks hard, good old German engineering had us stopped quickly & safely.

My brother & I both loved Stir Crazy, and so when when he met me at the warehouse later that day (it was a family biz) I told him the story, we howled with laughter. Dad is long gone but I'll take the funniest shit between us happily to my grave :D

Young Frankenstein to return to 500 theaters Oct 5th

LOS ANGELES — “Young Frankenstein” will come alive in theaters once again on Oct. 5, with a live introduction from writer-director Mel Brooks, who will pay tribute to the classic spoof’s late star Gene Wilder. The intro will be broadcast from the 20th Century Fox Lot in 500 theaters nationwide, according to an announcement from Fathom Events Tuesday.
In addition to touring the studio lot, where much of the movie was filmed, Brooks is expected reminisce about his friend and collaborator Wilder, who died last Sunday from complications from Alzheimer’s disease.

"Young Frankenstein” is one of Wilder’s most fondly remembered films. The announcement comes on the heels of AMC Theaters bringing other Wilder favorites “Blazing Saddles” and “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” back to theaters this past weekend.
