There was or still is a morning radio show in the SF bay area, Lamont & Tenelly. They did a crank call bit where they played a recording of EK, after the person answered you then heard EK screaming, "WHO IS THIS? DO YOU KNOW WHO THIS IS? I'M EVIL KNIEVEL MOTHER****ER! I'LL KICK YOUR ASS!". Hillarious.

I'll bet we all had that wind up motorcycle. Did you have the red one or the blue one?

A real american icon.

I see he inspired you, but at least you had the sense to do it on a MX bike !!

We grew up watching EK do his stunts, and then going outside getting out bikes (bicycles) and building ramps, then attempting to make the jump. I did jump a trashcan:bis: but, unfortnatly my landing was a little off and bent my wheel. :cuss:

I do remember watching the snake river jump in that rocket ship, and that parachute not working . My mother wouldn't let us watch it live tho,,,, just in case......... but saw the slow motion about a thousand times..

Actually bro he used Triumphs, they cranked up faster than Harleys. & much lighter and more agile. That being said he might've at one point or another used an H-D Sporster (for an odd 'promo' jump or two) but I don't really recall that. In this video on youtube you can see it's not a Harley, he does a practice run up the ramp & stops before doing the jump. When he stops at the top of the ramp he's on a Triumph.

Maybe he was mugging for the camera?

Here's what I found on a quick Google of 'Evel Knievel Triumph'

This is Evel being quoted:
"I got hurt real bad in Tacoma, Washington," Knievel says. "Had a severe brain concussion. Landed short. Hit the ramp, caught it on the rear wheel. I was riding a Triumph then, T-120 Bonneville. Then a 650 Bonneville Triumph.
"Norton was the first sponsor I had. Then I went to Triumph.
Knievel has claimed that the Triumph 650 was far and away the best bike he ever jumped with. As his reputation and fame began to swell, crowds would flock to see the man with the uncanny handle soar his bike over what were, depending on the fee promised him, increasingly more unlikely obstacles.

EDIT:

But! He was also known for doing wheelies at his shows.......
maybe he used a Harley for that?

I've ridden a lot of dirt bikes in my early days 60s-70s & Harleys from '74 until even today....... You ain't gonna get the speed and handling you want for a jump out of a Harley.

He always dressed in Red White & Blue for the all american look & he ran a R,W & B #1 plate on the front of his cycle, a lot of folks looking, watching assumed he was riding a Harley I think.

I did find this though.......
evelsHarley.jpg

"He chose (and customized) this motorcycle, a 1972 Harley-Davidson XR-750, because it was a light, dependable racing machine. Made of steel, aluminum, and fiberglass, it weighs approximately 300 pounds." <---Evel actually did the Wembley stadium jump on this '72 Harley in 1975. But he broke the Harley in half in Oct. '75 during another jump at the Kings Island Amusement Pk in Ohio.

I never considered the XR-750 series of H-D's, they were very light flat trackers, racing bikes sold to professional factory racing teams only.

And so I stand somewhat corrected, earlier yrs on British iron & later on the Harley.......& I just heard from Evels own mouth on the History Channel....... "And here's my Harley XR-750 that I made my last 3 jumps on."
