A question for my fellow sativa lovers:
what causes sativa re-flowering / hermaphrodite flowers? Is there a way to PROMOTE this, as strange as that might sound?
If a sativa throws bananas late in flowering, does it have enough time to produce seeds, and if so, will those seeds be feminized seeds?
If the pollen from a hermaphrodite sativa re-flower is used to pollenate another strain, will the resulting hybrid seeds be feminized?
I ask because out of 18 plants in a seed run I have 18 females. Sounds like a dream I know but I need seeds!
Genetics....
Hermi seeds are going to produce hermi plants and you are going to have seeds every run...
So what of stress-induced / light cycle induced hermi traits? These are environmental factors and would seem to indicate that the seeds from one of these types of events would contain genetic material from a plant that might not hermi under proper conditions. And what of the commercial feminized seed market? Not trying to be rude Im just not sure I understand what your saying.
It's genetics. I cannot tell you what exact gene it is that does it but its genetics.
Basically if a plant thinks that it will die it will throw out male flowers to preserve its lineage. In nature this is acceptable but as growers we do not want plants that throw male flowers because we do not want seed in our crops unless we are doing a seed run and I personally recommend using males but there are others on the boards that have different opinions on the matter.
This is where feminized seeds come in. I think it was Dutch Passion that started the feminized seeds. They used gibberellic acid if I remember correctly. A lot of hobbyist growers have found colliodal silver a good alternative that is easily found at most grocery stores. What this does is stop the ethylene production in the plant. This makes the female throw out male flowers with viable pollen. This pollen is then used on the plant itself or another female to produce feminized seeds.
I hope this helps answer your questions. You should check out the breeders lab section to learn more about feminized seeds and hermies. There are a lot of good threads in there that have all sorts of good information.
Here is a pic of my Thai x Oax Trance.
The Thai was the one that I found in the pack of Gypsy Thai's and the Oaxacan Trance is a very strong trippy Oax male that I have.
